Movie Review: ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’
The TV Guide

As I mentioned earlier, I was able to attend an early screening of Captain America: The First Avenger — which doesn’t hit theaters until this Friday. From the very start, I have voiced my concern for this film because I was worried that the movie (albeit a comic book movie) would not look believable. After seeing and falling in love with Thor this past Spring, I was certain that it would be my fave superhero film of the year (considering how disappointing Green Lantern was, Thor really was the frontrunner with X-Men: First Class as a close 2nd). But, I now stand corrected. IMHO, Captain America is THE best superhero movie of 2011.

All of my concerns about Captain America: The First Avenger were completely washed away. Captain America manages to marry the right mix of action, adventure AND emotion to make for a thoroughly enjoyable film. Chris Evans excellently portrays the hero with a heart of gold who proves that true heroism comes from within. You can’t help but LOVE that scrawny Steve Rogers is chosen to become the super soldier Captain America. I couldn’t help but root for him thruout the film. It wasn’t so much that I was in awe of him as a superhero, it’s that I LIKED him as a genuinely good guy. My biggest concern was that the costume would look dumb but, as you will see when you see this movie, producers managed to pay homage to the Captain America costume we all know and love AND still introduce the new costume in believable fashion. Captain America solidified for me the fact that Marvel Studios just makes the best superhero films. Absent the Batman films from Christopher Nolan, I’d say that Marvel has got the superhero movie market on lock. They have figured out how to turn campy comic book characters into believable live action characters. When I compare Green Lantern with Captain America, there is NO question which is the far superior film. Green Lantern may have had its fun moments but it’s not nearly as solid a film as Captain America … or Thor, or X-Men: First Class (or Iron Man or Spider-Man). Yes, Marvel may have made some mistakes in the past (Daredevil and Electra, I’m talking to YOU) but I think they finally figured it out. You’ve gotta see Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s really fun, strangely emotional and entirely entertaining. I enjoyed it so much, I can’t wait to see the film again … I’ll just be sure to leave my silly mask at home ;)

Thanks Trent. Not gonna lie, I thought Chris Evens was going to make this movie aweful, just because I hated Fantastic Four. But if you say its good, I believe it. Now I am totally gonna see it!

The movie’s good, but I still think Thor and X-Men were better!

I liked the visual style of the movie- however, it was not special enough to save the poor script and almost non-existent characterization. I honestly did not care what happened to any of them.
It’s a shame because I wanted to like this movie. I’ve loved some of Marvel’s stuff- like X-Men: First Class and the Spider man movies. But I honestly don’t think this one is worth the money.
There is absolutely NO SUSPENSE in this movie, and what’s going to happen is clear from the get-go. The boss fight at the end is very weak, and the movie just seems to melt into meaningless and uninteresting fight sequence after another.
I hope they would make movies with more originality and depth.

I agree completely! It seemed like they tried to establish the personalities of many of the secondary characters with only one line of dialogue or so.. Plus the romance between Captain America and the agent woman was rushed and unbelievable.
The costumes were nice though, as was that scene with the little boy saying he could swim. :) Otherwise the movie theater was silent during the jokes…
