David Beckham Reveals The Inspiration For His Newborn Daughter’s Name
"Victoria's favourite book is To Kill A Mockingbird ..."

Last week, David Beckham took to his official Facebook profile to announce the name of his newborn daughter Harper Seven Beckham. This weekend, he uses his Facebook profile again to explain the inspiration for her name. It’s pretty obvious that the baby’s middle name Seven was inspired by Becks‘s first soccer jersey number but according to his latest Facebook update, her first name was inspired by mama Victoria Beckham‘s favourite book. HMMM. Did you know that Vicki B. likes to read?

After a week of speculation, David Beckham has finally revealed the reasons behind his newborn daughter Harper Seven’s unusual name. Despite a long-held rumour that his wife Victoria has never read a book, the footballer said they had named their daughter after Harper Lee – the author of Posh’s favourite book To Kill A Mockingbird. In a series of videos posted on his official Facebook page, the LA Galaxy player speaks about his joy as becoming a father for the fourth time. Dismissing speculation they named Harper Seven off a character from Disney TV show Wizards Of Waverly Place or Harper’s Bazaar magazine, David said the name had a literary meaning for them. He said: ‘A lot of thought goes into our children’s names and Harper was a name that we’ve loved for a long time for a couple of reasons. ‘One reason is Harper’s an old English name which we loved and one of the other reasons was Victoria’s favourite book is To Kill A Mockingbird and the author was Harper Lee. It’s a very strong, passionate book. That’s where Harper came from.’ The revelation that is is Victoria’s favourite book may surprise some fans, because it was widely thought she had never read a book … The footballer went on to admit her former shirt number 7 while he played for Manchester United and England had also played a strong part in them choosing Seven as a middle name. He explained: ‘And then Seven you know, a lot of people have assumed its just because of my shirt number that I wore for many years and part of it is because I had so much luck around wearing that number, wearing it for England, wearing it for Manchester United. It was such an influential number throughout my career and a lucky number… but that wasn’t the main reason. The other reasons behind Seven was because it symbolises spiritual perfection, the Seven Wonders Of The World, seven colours of the rainbow and in many cultures around the world it’s regarded as a lucky number. So we love the name, we love Harper Seven. We’re very proud of having her in our lives and in our family and it’s an amazing time for our family right now.’ In a second video, the father-of-four admitted he was adjusting to life with a girl in the house after so long with just the couple’s three sons Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and Cruz, six. He said: ‘To have another girl in the family is really incredible. We’ve got three beautiful healthy boys already and we’re so lucky to have that and now to have a beautiful little girl. Having a daughter is a whole new thing. Having pink in the house, having lilac in the house… and you have to be a lot more delicate with girls than boys and I’m not used to that so it’s a whole new experience. It’s an amazing experience to have that little bundle of joy in your hands, making her little noises and opening their eyes, it really is an incredible moment for us.’

The videos are not embedable here but you watch them in full on Becks‘s Facebook profile HERE. This would be the second weekend of baby Harper updates from Becks on Facebook … perhaps next weekend we’ll get our first look at the little darling? I can’t wait to see her :)

Gahhhh!! He’s such perfection!! I know people talk trash about his voice, but I think it’s so adorable! I think my unconditional love is what’s going to win him over when he leaves Victoria and shacks up with me.. ;)

Haha as if To Kill A Mockingbird is Posh’s favorite book! I remember an interview from awhile back where she said she never read a book in her entire life because she was too busy.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic. I am not sure how it is in Europe, but they make us read it during high school in English class. Maybe it is a favorite from back in the days. :shrugs:

@anhimals — I’m telling you, I have a real hard time picturing VB reading ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. I just don’t buy it.

As she went to school in the UK, I would suspect she would have been forced to read a British Classic as opposed to an American classic.

However, I am still going with the she never read the book idea. Just an effort to give the child’s name some substantial meaning.

Harper is such a popular name at the moment, seems every little girl is being called that. Neil Patrick Harris and I’m sure Lisa Marie Presley have both called one of their twins Harper. I don’t understand why there has to be a meaning behind a name. It seems to me that celebrities can’t have a baby without a lot of hoo ha about why they called their child a particular name. What happened to choosing a hame because you like it?

Eh. You never know…I mean, Victoria has surprised me in the past. I always took her for some stuck up, no sense of humor, person. Yet she seems to be the complete opposite. Maybe she said she never read a book before to throw people off? My friend use to pretend she was stupid so people wouldn’t ask her to do anything. Maybe it was something like that? The ‘meaning’ of the name was kind of interesting.
