MTV Cancels ‘Skins’
"Skins ... unfortunately didn’t connect with a US audience"

The news concerning the US version of Skins that pretty much everyone was expecting has finally been announced … MTV has decided to cancel the series. As you may know, MTV commissioned a US version of the hit UK series Skins to be created for the US audience and right from the get-go, the show failed to find an audience. Despite sagging ratings, MTV stuck to its guns and aired all 10 episodes of the season … but as soon as the first season ended, MTV barely acknowledged that the show even existd in the first place. It was pretty much assumed by everyone that the show would be canceled and today we learn, officially, that Skins has been axed for good.

MTV will not be going with a second season of its racy teen drama Skins. The news is not particularly surprising as it’s been almost 3 months since the series ended its freshman run. “Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn’t connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped,” MTV said in a statement. “We admire the work that the series’ creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it.” Skins, an adaptation of the praised British series, became one of MTV’s most talked about shows ever when TV watchdog the Parents Television Council characterized it as possibly “the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen.” It called on the Feds to open an investigation for possible child pornography and exploitation on the show, which, in keeping with the British original, employed (often underage) teen actors to play the characters of the same age. That led to a number of advertisers pulling from the show but MTV stuck with it and aired the entire first season with small editing of more explicit content.

At the end of the day, the show was just bad. Not only was it a poor carbon copy of the original but the actors cast in the US version were just really terrible. I do commend MTV for trying to import an amazingly cutting edge show like Skins to the US but our TV culture is just not as advanced as the TV culture in Europe. MTV knew that it could not just air the original series here so they tried to replicate it as best they could with a new cast … and sadly, it just didn’t work. I am really glad that the US version of Skins has been axed. It was painful to watch and it really did a disservice to the original series. I still suggest that those of you interested in the series seek out the original UK version of Skins and watch that instead. It’s an excellent show, one of my favorites actually. But this US version was just sad … I think it’s best for all concerned that it just go away and never be heard from again.

    there was a US version?

To be honest I did catch the 1st eps. Maybe if hadnt been watching the UK show since the beginning I wouldnt have been able to compare them both.
Or if they called it something other than Skins

I watched the us version and thought it was mildly entertaining.. how do I find the uk version?? I would love to see it!!

You can watch it instantly if you have netflix. I sat down and watched the full first season into the wee hours of the morning. The UK version is far more compelling and more believable. I just don’t think it was relatable to American youth. Beyond that, the acting was kind of appalling.

Had already forgotten there was a US version.Only watched the first few minutes anyway, it was just awful. UK Skins is best by far, although haven’t loved it as much after the first 2 seasons.. Rip Chris and Freddie…

hallelu and thank you God! the US version shouldn’t have even been called “skins” because it besmirches UK “skins” good name. glad it’s dunzo.

This writer is clearly stupid. How is europe more advanced when US entertainment is the greatest and most profitable and most envyed in the world. this writer is a sellout who has a pitiful inferiority complex. If u love Europe so much, move there and write for the europeans. The US doesn’t need delusional cowards

    • Ryan says:

I believe he means European television is more advanced in terms of having a more open minded audience. In america, we censor EVERYTHING because our culture gets so easily offended by such stupid nonsense. In Europe, its not like that at all, therefore they could pull off a controversial show like SKINS far better. So yea, whether you realize it or not, european audiences are far more advanced than american audiences.

Exactly, Ryan, Truthhurts is being a total jerk. How dare you come to someone’s website and call them a delusional coward for their opinion. You are really rude.

    • perdiz says:

The fact that you have gotten so offended and defensive over some one else’s OPINION proves his point.

i thought the US one was okay. the ending was stupid though. i saw the uk version and it was really good! but i only saw the first and second seasons. idk if i want to watch the new characters of the uk version; i instantly fell in love with the uk cast :( are the other seasons worth watching?

    • NKW says:

Seasons 3 and 4 are worth watching if you ask me, i dont know why but i didnt love the first and second seasons as much as the third and forth…..maybe just because cook stood out for me in the third and forth

  10. grz says:

well I liked season one. but season 2 got kinda wack! I just loved the tony episode though it was really good. Maybe I’ll watch the new seasons since there’s nothing else to do on summer breaks
