First Listen: Björk, ‘Crystalline’
"It's the sparkle you become / When you conquer anxiety"

Earlier this month we got our first tease of Björk‘s new single Crystalline, the first from her upcoming new album Biophilia. As you may recall, Björk released a video of her driving in Iceland with her song playing thru the speakers. Today we get to listen to Crystalline in full! Click below to check it out and hear what Björk has in store for us all with her new iPad-inspired album.

The song sounds, to me, like an outgrowth of the music she made on her 2001 album Vespertine (which, I must add, is among my fave Björk albums). I am so intrigued by the notion that Björk‘s Biophila album was inspired by and created using the Apple iPad. Here is Crystalline:

Underneath our feet
Crystals grow like plants
Listen how they grow
I’m blinded by the lights
Listen how they grow
In the core of the Earth
Listen how they glow

Crystalline
Internal nebula
Crystalline
Rocks growing slow but
Crystalline
I conquer claustrophobia
Crystalline
And demand the lights

We mimic the openness
Of the ones we love
Daft till our generosity
Equalizes the flow
With our hearts
We kiss our quartz
To reach love

Crystalline
Internal nebula
Crystalline
Rocks growing slow but
Crystalline
I conquer claustrophobia
Crystalline
And demand the lights

Octagon, polygon
Pipes up an organ
Sonic branches
Murmuring drone
Crystalizing galaxies
Spread out like my fingers

Crystalline
Internal nebula
Crystalline
Rocks growing slow but
Crystalline
I conquer claustrophobia
Crystalline
And demand the lights

It’s the sparkle you become
When you conquer anxiety
Sparkle you become
Conquer anxiety
Sparkle you become
When you conquer anxiety
It’s the sparkle you become
When you conquer anxiety

I LOVE this track … altho the toy piano has that Vespertine sound, I also hear shades of Homogenic as well. I am really anxious for the release of this album. If Crystalline is any indication, I think I am going to LOVE Biophilia very much! What do y’all think, Björk fans … do you love this track?

Oh I really, really like the instrumentation here a lot. Lovely sound. However, the four and a half minute mark transition totally spoiled the vibe for me upon first listen, but I’ll hear it again and maybe that part will fit better for me.
And thank GAWD you posted the lyrics :)

  2. Kent says:

Yup. Second listen and I think I’ll be okay with it.

  3. Dgrin says:

she really needs to take a step away from herself, this is same old boring stuff and I mean 90′s drum’n'bass in this time and age?!

  4. Erin says:

Intriguing…this definitely makes me want to hear the rest of Biophilia. My favourite Bjork album is Vespertine and I don’t know if she’ll ever reach that height again, since she’s gone so experimental with her music. However, I can’t wait to get Biophilia. Anyone know the release date?

  5. Mykah says:

I am in love with this track! It’s sounds like something that could have came off of vespertine. Volta wasn’t a favorite of mine so I’m excited the hear her new album!

  6. Caroline says:

While i’m kind of over the whole drum n’ bass phenom, I wish that the song would have included some less offensive (meaning I wish i could hear her more rather than the beat) variation of that earlier in the song. I’ve always enjoyed Bjork so i’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the album is like.

  7. Xadax says:

I love it but the title kinda reminded me of Goldfrapp w/ their Crytalline Green. Just the title Okay.

  8. Trent you know how I feel about her <3 OMG Cant wait for a tour schedule. SFO L.A. or where ever she ends up Im there!!!!

  9. Candice says:

wow love the drum and bass ending!!

  10. Candice says:

WOW love the drum n Bass ending! Goes well with the story. well done Bjork!

  11. Hunter says:

That is a harsh transition at the end. My favorite of hers is “Homegenic.” I can’t wait to see what else is on the new one!

  12. All Is Full of Love says:

Overworked but subtle, and again she calmed and lifted my soul. I think this song is a partial piece to the big puzzle and will make more sence with the rest of the pieces. This may be her best experiment yet.
