Björk Will Release Her New Album ‘Biophilia’ Via 10 iPad Apps
Plus, Get Your First Listen of the New Song 'Crystalline'

Back in March we learned that visionary musician Björk announced the release of a new album titled Biophilia. Inspired by and created with iPad technology, Björk promised that her new album would be offered in a very inventive way. Today we learn that Biophilia will be released via 10 iPad apps in addition to a conventional album release. Additionally, Björk has released a teaser video that gives us our first listen to the album’s first single Crystalline. Read and listen below for more.

Anything Bjork ever does is noteworthy, musically speaking, and now that she’s decided to release her next album Biophilia, as a multimedia project comprised of 10 iPad apps, she’s also become noteworthy in a technological sense. According to the Guardian, Biophilia will consist of 10 apps bundled inside a single umbrella app, and they all evolve and change with time.

For one song, Virus, the app will feature a close-up study of cells being attacked by a virus to represent what Snibbe calls: “A kind of a love story between a virus and a cell. And of course the virus loves the cell so much that it destroys it.” The interactive game challenges the user to halt the attack of the virus, although the result is that the song will stop if you succeed. In order to hear the rest of the song, you have to let the virus take its course.

The release date for the album and the app are still unknown, but it will certainly be interesting when it finally does appear.

I am absolutely not surprised at all that Björk has come up with the genius plan to release her album via iPad apps … it’s brilliant! And judging by the sound of her first single, I think this album is going to be amazing. OMG … new Björk music … I can hardly contain myself. Exciting days ahead … I cannot wait for the release of this new album.

Wooot! Unfortunately I don’t have an iPad, but at least I’ll still be able to get the album! I LOVE Bjork so much..I can’t wait for new stuff!!

I kinda miss the old Bjork: Homogenic, Post… She kind of went too experimental -for my taste- after. I loved Dancer in the Dark though.

  3. Asha says:

I adore Bjork and she is a true artist.

i kinda miss when she tried to make more ethereal vocals than now where she just write a bunch of lyrics and repeats the same vocal road..and this song reminds me the mess of HOPE from VOLTA and that ain’t good.

    imagine driving beside her! OMG

So does this mean there will be no CD release at all? I don’t own an Ipad and I have no wish to own one. I’m a huge Bjork fan and like you, I’ve been waiting years for a new album.

If this album is going to be in Ipad app format only, I’m going to take it as a direct snub to Bjork’s loyal fans who have apparently committed the great sin of shunning Apple products….

@Erin — “Today we learn that Biophilia will be released via 10 iPad apps in addition to a conventional album release.” The album will be released in CD, digital MP3 and iPad formats.

Trent noted a non-ipad album release, so I think you will be able to buy a CD. I hope so, as that’s how I intend to acquire it. Loved the clip!

I just read the linked article more thoroughly. Turns out she’s going to be releasing a cd after all. *panic averted*
