Over the weekend we learned that a city in North Carolina has been chosen as the set for the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games. Today we get to see a whole SLEW of photos from Shelby, NC that show the sleepy town coming to life as District 12. The Shelby Star newspaper gained access to the set and managed to procure a bunch of great photos of things like Katniss Everdeen‘s house, Peeta Mellark‘s bakery and more. Check out these fun photos below.

It made the cover of ‘Entertainment Weekly.’ And it’s being filmed in Shelby. But you wouldn’t know it unless you made a trip up to the old P&M Warehouse, now blocked off by road closure signs and under security guard watch. ‘The Hunger Games,’ the anticipated movie adaptation of the popular book series, is set to begin filming this week in Shelby. Mike Bankhead, owner of Shelby Farm & Garden, said the operation thus far hasn’t affected business or drawn a lot of attention. The P&M Warehouse is located directly behind his shop, separated by a now closed road. “I hadn’t really seen anything,” Bankhead said, noting that the crew came into town about a week ago. “We walked around a little, saw some people out there. But the road closures haven’t impacted business, he said, and no customers have come in asking about the movie. Crew members were seen carrying 2x4s beside a train car and working with hand tools Monday morning at the film site. Two Travelynx buses were parked nearby.
Previously we heard that Hildebran, NC might be the site of the film but it now appears that Shelby, NC will become District 12. Now that the movie set secret is out, I expect others will make their way to the area in the hopes of catching a glimpse of filming. I would not be surprised if we spent the rest of the Summer seeing photos from the Hunger Games set … including the film’s stars in action. This first look at the set is really neat, I gotta say. I love that The Hunger Games is actually coming to life.

This weekend I finally read the first book. I can see why people like it as its a pull you in kind of book but it just seemed like a weak version of “battle royale”. Anybody who’s a fan should definitely read that book its amazing. Despite not looking the hunger games as much I can’t help but want to know what happens next.
I also thought of Battle Royale as I read The Hunger Games. Such a dark, eerie premise. Battle Royale made an excellent movie…hopefully The Hunger Games will, too!
I’m soooo excited!! Can’t wait to see more.
I JUST FINISHED READING THE BOOK AND IT WAS PURE BRILLIANCE!
umm…am i the only one who imagined how district 12 looked like? O:
I did, too. I remember in one of the books Katniss was talking about walking through snow that was piled up way above her head. So I always picture the town as kind of a worn down mountain type village. I see it as being all packed together with the woods on all sides.
sorry i meant:
am i the only one who imagined district 12 differently ? :O
Ummm,I know… That’s why I agreed with you. ? These pictures aren’t how I imagined the town.
I did.
I imagined District 12 as a lot more City of Ember-like, but that was just because we never know just how far in the future Panem exists. Seeing these photos, I love the idea that there is no new architecture in District 12 (except for the Victors’ Village) since the fall of of America and the rise of Panem.
i agree on how city of ember is how i imagined it. this setting seems more of a happier kind of setting. i hope it all works out.
I just started this series & am loving it! I’m a little over halfway through the first book. I am really glad they are living up to all the talk. It really makes up for the extreme disgust I felt after reading Twilight because so many people were talking about the series.
I just finished and I hope when the movie comes out it isn’t as bad as the twilight movies. Those just ruined the book for me. (i basically agree with everything you said)
I can honestly say that being from the area District 12 was filmed in, this part of Shelby was the perfect spot for District 12. Run down but still running.
