Congratulations are in order for Rihanna and Britney Spears as their remix of Ri Ri‘s single S&M is crowned the #1 song in the country. All of the credit goes to Rihanna for this accomplishment because it is her single that tops the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart but I think it’s pretty clear that Britney Spears‘s appearance on the track is largely responsible for the song being such a big hit — and for going straight to #1!

Rihanna’s “S&M” rises 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to be released tomorrow (Apr. 21) on Billboard.com, granting the singer her 10th No. 1 on the survey and ownership of a pair of historic chart records. Having first reigned atop the Hot 100 the week of May 13, 2006, with “SOS,” Rihanna logs the shortest span between a solo artist’s first and 10th No. 1s in the chart’s 52-year history, a stretch of four years, 11 months and two weeks. (This week’s charts are dated Apr. 30, 2011). Rihanna bests the five-year, four-month span between current Island Def Jam labelmate Mariah Carey’s first (“Vision of Love,” Aug. 4, 1990) and 10th (“One Sweet Day,” Dec. 2, 1995) toppers to complete the quickest sprint to 10 Hot 100 No. 1s among solo artists. (Carey collected the first 15 of her 18 career No. 1s while signed to Columbia Records). Among all acts, Rihanna trails only the Beatles (one year, eight months and one week) and the Supremes (two years, eight months and three weeks) for the fastest accumulation of 10 Hot 100 No. 1s. Rihanna is additionally the youngest artist to notch 10 No. 1s in the Hot 100′s archives. At 23 years, two months and one week, Rihanna (born Feb. 20, 1988) eclipses the mark established by Carey, who was 25 years, eight months and one week old when she tallied her 10th Hot 100 leader. Rihanna is just the ninth artist to total at least 10 Hot 100 No. 1s and the fifth solo female, following Carey (18), Madonna (12), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10). (The Beatles lead all acts with 20 career No. 1s; Michael Jackson has the most (13) among solo males. In addition to the Supremes (12), Stevie Wonder (10) is the other act with at least 10 Hot 100 leaders). “S&M” ascends to the Hot 100′s summit fueled by the first full week of digital sales for the song’s “Rih-mix” featuring Britney Spears. All versions of the song, which claims the Hot 100′s Digital Gainer award and becomes Rihanna’s record-extending 10th No. 1 on Digital Songs, sold a combined 293,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 108% increase over last week. The Spears-assisted version of the track accounted for 66% of the song’s overall weekly digital sum … Now listed as featured artist on “S&M,” Spears earns her fifth Hot 100 No. 1 and second this year, following her own “Hold It Against Me” in January. She had previously reigned with her debut single “…Baby One More Time” in 1999 and returned to the summit with “Womanizer” (2008) and “3″ (2009).
Woot!! This is fantastic news. It was a BRILLIANT idea to team up Rihanna and Britney on this single remix. I had no doubt in my mind that the track would go straight to #1. Congrats and love all around … Rihanna and Britney are the queens of the pop chart this week! Weeee!!!

its also britney’s 5th number 1… congrats brihanna :)
It is a great song and Brit just gives that much extra spunk!!
Love these two power houses together!! And thanks to Trent or else I wouldn’t have heard about it till it was on the radio! Trent, you make me cooler :)
Love this R&B collabo :)
I think britney sounds terrible and she sounds stuffed with that weird baby voice. I dont like it at all…imho
Honestly I don’t know why they call it a remix, when it seems like a re-recording with Britney’s vocals to me.. I prefer the original..
I for one think the song was perfect without Britney, but whatever. I think Britney sounds horrible on it and adds absolutely nothing interesting to the track.
In all honesty, Britney does make the song. I liked the song with just Rihanna, but Britney has something that really makes a pop track – in my opinion – fantastic. Britney is the epitome of pop music… I think Britney could pull the song off if she just sang it herself.
It’s obvious that s&m hit the chart at #1 bcs of BRITNEY! without her it would just fell down :)
Beyonce says girls rule the world but i think its clear that queen britney is the only girl that rules the world! ;) bummed there wont be video for it tho!
I am so fascinated by all the incredible detail that goes into Billboard chart reports. I just love it.
When this remix came out, I kinda thought it would kill in the clubs but I really didn’t think much about impact elsewhere. I liked the song a lot before, so I don’t really feel like Britney added much, but at the same time she obviously didn’t hurt the song either. It’s a great tune, either way.
I have to say, I really love the original and can’t stand the remix. Britney sounds horrible on it, it sounds more like Rihanna teamed up with a robot. :(
When I heard the final version I loved it nrit doesnt sound so nasally its kickass loved it more than the original
many people says Britney sound horrible… but she always manage to reach no #1!!
Why do you people HAVE to talk shit? I don’t get it. If you don’t like something, change the station or passover the article, whatever.
I find it crazy interesting that there are die hard Britney fans that defend and love her no matter what and there are die hard Britney haters that just HAVE TO vomit about her over and over…
I liked the first version very much. For years I’ve been hoping for a Britney/ Rihanna team up and this was the perfect song for. When the new version was release, I deleted the previous from phone. I love it even more and as much as I enjoyed the original, I just can’t go back because it’s like it’s missing something now.
I know some people dotn like the song, but its true brit gets all the credit cause how many weeks was it out before she was on it and no number one single!
