Britney Spears Scores Her 6th #1 Album With ‘Femme Fatale’
Britney Becomes The Only Female Artist in History to Have 6 Albums Debut at #1

Congratulations are in order for our dear Britney Spears because she has made history today with her 6th #1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. With Femme Fatales debut atop the album chart this week, Britney not only becomes the ONLY female artist in history to have 6 albums debut at #1 but she is also the youngest artist in history to have #1 albums in 3 different decades. Britney Spears is #1 again! And that is cause for MUCH celebration.

Britney Spears flies in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with her sixth chart-topping album, “Femme Fatale,” selling 276,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The feat ties her for the third-most No. 1s among women with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Only Barbra Streisand (nine No. 1s) and Madonna (seven) have earned more No. 1s. Spears has hit the top with six out of her seven studio albums, only missing with 2007′s “Blackout,” which debuted and peaked at No. 2 (290,000). Her last effort, 2008′s “Circus,” started more robustly than “Femme Fatale,” as it launched at No. 1 with 506,000 following its Dec. 2 release. “Femme Fatale’s” debut of 276,000 is Spears’ second-lowest sales start with a studio set — only her 1999 debut effort, “Baby One More Time,” began with a smaller figure (121,000 at No. 1). Though, one could conclude that “Circus” was a more highly-anticipated album, in that it was seen as a “comeback” after a number of years where Spears’ personal and professional life was in chaotic high-gear. “Circus” was ushered in by the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single “Womanizer” — complete with a return-to-sexy-form music video. “Femme Fatale,” however, isn’t a comeback album. There’s nothing to come back from, aside from great success. Spears sold 1.7 million of “Circus” in the U.S., snared three top 20 Hot 100 singles from the set, and mounted a blockbuster global tour … Also worth noting is that “Femme Fatale” is Spears’ first album to see a spring release in over a decade. While her first set dropped in January of 1999 and her second offering, 2000′s “Oops! … I Did It Again,” came out in May of 2000, the rest of her catalog (even her hits packages and remix sets) were issued during the always-busy shopping period of November-December.

Altho Britney‘s first week numbers aren’t her highest ever, it should be noted that the music buying climate of consumers is vastly different than it used to be in year’s past. The record industry is dying a slow death … people just don’t buy music the same way they used to. And even still, Britney managed to outsell everyone else in the first week of her 7th album’s release. I am SO bummed that Blackout is Britney‘s only album not to go to #1 … it’s a fantastic album and if she were well enough to promote the album when it was released, it would’ve surely been her most successful album up to that time. IMHO, Femme Fatale is Britney‘s strongest album in years and is arguably the best album of her career. Britney Spears, makin’ history … as usual :) I’m gonna celebrate Britney‘s latest accomplishment by playing Femme Fatale on repeat today … just like I have been doing for the past 3 weeks :D Woot!!!

I’m still bitter that blackout did not end up being number 1. I love that album. Literally LOVE IT. I’ve bought like 2 copies of it.

  2. Andrea says:

Yeah I did not like that they changed the rules for Blackout that I believe it was U2 that aloud to chart even though it was only sold from one distributor. In my mind I dont count that I say she was number 1 this is her seventh number 1 to me. It was not me who changed the rules.

    • ben says:

It was actually The Eagles and it was sold exclusively at Wal-Mart! I remember because a co-worker and I were so pissed that they changed the rules dys before the album came out!

Congrats to Britney for another successful album!!!

    • Rosemary says:

It was actually the Eagles greatest hits vol 2 that beat Blackout (brilliant album) and the rule literally changed at midnight the night before. i think the timing was cruel, they could have done it the next day and strted thhe week offf with everyone in on it!

      • krissy says:

I think the rule change was long over due. Could her fans really celebrate being “#1″, when there was a cd out there that sold a ton more copies the same week? In order for Billboard’s chart to have any kind of credibility, they needed to change the rule. It is like how they now factor in digital sales, it needed to be updated for credibility’s sake.

  3. Claire says:

A very well deserved honor. :)

  4. shaniqua says:

blame the eagles for blackout at #2. cuz old people buy more records

  5. Brady says:

It was the Eagles that nabbed the number 1 spot from blackout something that to this day makes no sense to me! But I somewhat agree with Trent Blackout was amazing ive bought three copies but I think Femme Fatale is at the same level im not sure which I love more but go britney FUCK YA on ur number 1!!!!!!!

  6. vVv says:

blackout would be numbre 1 to but billboard changed than a way of counting !

  8. JayeBea JayeBea says:

So awesome…the bitch still gots it!

  9. Kieren Kieren says:

Yeah it sucks that her best album of her career didn’t make number one.

Only 276,000? Yikes! Didn’t Circus sell around 500,000 and it seemed like it got less promo than this one. Then again FF was leaked like 3 weeks early.

    • jj says:

the leak ruined femme fatale sales it was too early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Trent Trent says:

@jj — IMHO, I don’t really care about the numbers. Britney is #1 and that’s all that matters. She will put on a kick ass tour and then, hopefully, release another #1 album in a couple of years :D

    • Rosemary says:

Yeah but was still the 2nd highjest of the year sales wise, its been about half of the sales of the 2010′s equivalent months.

  10. jj says:

its so unfair for blackout but anyway im happy britney is number 1 again. if femme fatale didnt leak too early it will sold much more than that.

  11. Marcella says:

blackout wouldve been #1 if it wasnt for billboard changing the rules the DAY before and giving it to the stupid Eagles and counting their double disc as double the sells! I still associate blackout with being #1 even though its not =( god that pissed me off so much!!!!!! whatever at least she is STILL breaking records!!! you go girl! lets see if anyone can even try to keep up with your fabulous-ness!!!! <3

  12. Mark says:

BRITNEY is an ICON!! Love Femme Fatale, my favorite Britney album to date :) Can’t wait to see her on tour this summer!!

  13. 2Little says:

Congrats to Britney! She’s come a long way, baby. Now having said that: I listened to Femme Fatale & wanted to promptly clean between my ears with a bullet. It suuuucked!!!! I’m not a die hard Britney fan…when she gets w a good producer/songwriter, she puts out some bangers. To me it’s more about that than the voice (blah). Blackout, however, was great & I blasted that one on a regular.

  14. adri says:

    Grats <3 best album
    it's like my addiction…..
which is funny cause i've never been addicted to drugs.. food… just to britney!

  15. anthony says:

Yeah, Blackout deserve to be no#1 album and sure a better promotion!! anyway.. we couldnt turn the time!

  16. CL says:

Brit Brit is #1, thats all that matters. People dont go buy CDs anymore anyways. I do, just to support. She’s just so awesome, and it really shows that sticking with a formula can work, and good music is good music.

Funny how some people(like a certain Lady Gaga butt kissing blogger) wants to replace her so fast with someone whos never had a #1 album.

    TEAM BRITNEY!!!!!!!!

  17. Marcella says:

Also I’d just like to say that blackout broke some records…highest debut (#2) off an album that recieved least amount if promotion in history….THAT’S impressive!!! Let’s see if lady gags could be #1 with no promotion at all….it’s remarkable…only queen Britney could do it
