My Fave Movies Of 2011

Yesterday I posted my list of my Fave Albums of 2011 and today I present my list of my Fave Movies of 2011. In all honesty, 2011 was not a great year for film overall. Yes, there were some fun movies out this year … yes, there were a few important films but … for the most part, I was pretty Meh about the entire catalog of films that were released in 2011. But, despite the onslaught of terrible stuff released this year (ugh, Green Lantern) there really were a few really great films. Click below to see the list I complied of my fave films of the year.

Normally, I write out little paragraphs about why I like each film but because my full movie reviews for each of these films is so readily available, I’ll just rank the films in order and link each film to the original film review I wrote for the blog.

10: Footloose
09: Captain America: The First Avenger
08: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
07: Hanna
06: The Ides of March
05: Win Win
04: X-Men: First Class
03: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
02: Drive
01: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Just a few things about some of these choices … I stand by my assertion that the new Footloose is a fun, updated remake of one of the best 80s films of all time. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a very clever prequel … one that has opened the door for an entire new franchise of hopefully just-as-clever films. Win Win is the best movie that no one saw this year. X-Men: First Class was, by far, the best superhero film of the year. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 just made me weep like a baby … it was a great film to end a great franchise. I remain totally obsessed with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo … it was really the only movie I really thought about all year long and is the only film that I want to continue to watch over and over and over again.

That’s my list … did I forget anything? Which films made YOUR Best of list for 2011 … what did I forget?

no 50/50? that might be my favorite for the year.

The Help? Water for Elephants? Super 8?

    • Belen

Chase, I agree with you 100%. Those were awesome.

    • @CHASE — I actually didn’t get a chance to see The Help … strangely enough. Water for Elephants was just OK and I really didn’t like Super 8.

  • Rae

Oy- I got so confused when I saw this. You mean favorite movies of 2011, yes? ;-)

  • Lauri

50/50 was great! I would definitely include that. Our theater FINALLY got “My Week With Marilyn” and I’m hoping to include that to my list. Rise of the Planet was SO MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. And of course..Harry Potter :)

  • MM

I really loved Midnight in Paris

  • azcrab

    Weekend, 50/50, Moneyball and Melancholia

  • janaegal

I’m surprised to not see Another Earth on here…it was you that motivated me to watch it and I loved it! However, Drive wins it all, for obvious and real reasons ;)

  • Tonya

I’m with you on Footloose Trent, I felt like I was cheating on Kevin Bacon and the 80s when I went to see it, but I loved it. Switching up the music to a more country feel and paying homage to the original in so many ways (instead of the typical revamp that tries to forget the original existed) was fantastic. So much fun!

  • Hillary

    I loved The Help!

  • Shavonne

    No Breaking Dawn?? Hehehehe :D

    • Niki

Yes, Trent! Did you ever bribe anyone to see Breaking Dawn with you? I don’t remember seeing one of your reviews on the movie. :)

  • aimie

i HATED hanna! it was so weird. the music just didn’t jive with it. i felt like i shoulda been watching a porn, but this little girl kept killing poeople. it was strange. maybe too deep for me. the help was great, you’ve gotta see it!

  • Mark

    No Thor? Shocked!

  • J

The Tree of Life? War Horse?

  • My fave movie of 2011the was A Day In The Life. Nobody I know saw it, and that’s a crying shame. Pure emotion from open to close, everyone would be moved by it.
I do agree about Win Win … it is fantastic and deserves recognition.

I just watched Life in a Day a few nights ago. Wonderful film! :)

  • Whoops, the film title I wrote above is wrong… the correct title is Life In A Day.

  • Rebecca

Have to agree, I hated Hanna. Found the film to be completely pointless. JMO though :)

Never got to see Drive – I need to catch up!

  • Johnny

To do a list of good movies you actually need to see good movies in the first place ;-)

  • Rachael

Good list from what I can tell; I’ve only seen 5 of these but I enjoyed all of them (Captain America: The First Avenger, Hanna, Win Win, X-Men: First Class, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2). :) I still can’t wait to see Drive, it needs to come out on DVD already.

  • aubrey

    I soooo love Drive!

  • blaqfury

You gotta include Lincoln Lawyer. I was surprised at how good that movie (and soundtrack) was. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.

I’ve only seen 4 movies in your list but maybe I’ll make more of an effort to see some of the others.

  • Krissy

I wish I could comment! My favorite movies always come out at the end of the year, and I am so far behind. I have a stack of screeners to get to before I can comment. I REALLY loved GWTDT, so that is my current #1.

  • boo trent!! what about 50 50!!! it has to be one of the best films of the year!!!!
