Watch: Giuliana Rancic Reveals She Will Undergo A Double Mastectomy

"At the end, to be honest, all it came down to was just choosing to live"

Back in October, E! News host Giuliana Rancic revealed on The Today Show that medical tests found the early stages of cancer in her body. At the time, she shared the personal decision to have the cancerous lumps removed from her body. Today, Giuliana and hubby Bill Rancic returned to The Today Show to give an update. Sadly, the lumpectomy failed to get all of the cancer out of her body and Giuliana made the brave decision to have a double mastectomy in order to ensure that her body is cancer-free. Click below to watch video of Giuliana and Bill‘s appearance on The Today Show earlier today and read some deets about how she came to this difficult decision.

Giuliana Rancic will have a double mastectomy after lumpectomies failed to completely eradicate her breast cancer. Appearing with husband Bill Rancic on NBC’s Today show, the E! host, 36, said the couple considered another lumpectomy and radiation. But they are choosing the more drastic option, she said, because they want to be sure the cancer is gone, and make it much less likely to return – less than a 1 percent chance, according to her doctors. “For me, it was important to get the cancer out,” she said. “That’s what I wanted to do, just get it out.” The couple’s desire for children did play a part. The years of medication that follow the lumpectomy-radiation option would have meant delaying parenthood for several years. But the real decision was more basic than that. “At the end, to be honest, all it came down to was just choosing to live, and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life,” Rancic said. She said her husband’s support was crucial in reaching the decision. “Bill said to me, ‘I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid,’ ” she said. “He said, ‘I don’t care what you look like, I don’t care about the physical portion of this. I just need you around for the next 50 years. So, let’s just get you healthy.’ And that certainly helped me come to a decision.” She added: “I couldn’t be more at peace with the decision. But it’s hard, and I still break down some nights … But I’m okay.”

I cannot, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, ever truly understand what it must be like for a woman to make this kind of decision but it sounds like Giuliana knows what she wants and she has the loving support to move forward with her decision. I first got to meet Giuliana a few years ago, back when she was a DiPandi, and I can assure you … she is as real and as genuine as they come. Her struggle with cancer has revealed her to be an incredibly brave woman and I am just so proud of her for sharing this part of her personal life with the public. I know there are countless (far too many, actually) women out there who may be in Giuliana‘s exact situation … and hopefully, she can offer a bit of strength and support by sharing her personal story. I know this decision to undergo a double mastectomy did not come lightly and it will not be an easy one to follow thru with … but, again, I’m glad that Giuliana is sharing this part of her life. If anything good can come from her situation, it is my hope that she can be an inspiration to others. My love and best wishes go out to Giuliana … here’s hoping for a speedy and full recovery.

My mom had the EXACT kind of cancer G has and also had a double mastectomy. She has been cancer free for many years and lives a very healthy and active life. All the best to G and I can’t wait until they have a baby!!

its gonna be hard since you’re not just afflicted by this dangerous disease, you are gonna loose a body part, your normal life because of it. and it’s a huge decision for their part and i am glad that her husband loves her very much and understands her. i hope she gets well.

  3. don’t women who get masechtomies get the option of implants put in ?

  4. JillyD

Yeah, most do. My mom’s body rejected hers but I think most women get implants. I think Christina Applegate did.

My husband’s aunt had a double mastectomy over 10 years ago and she got implants. At the time she was given 1 year to live, but she is doing well. About two years ago one of her implants leaked and caused some weirdness and she had to get new ones. I hope that this will rid Giuliana’s body of all the cancer cells and she will have a long life ahead of her!

I just wish her all the best. I’m sure that part of her sadness comes from not being able to nurse any children she and Bill do have after she kicks cancer’s ass. It’s hard to imagine chopping part of your body off and replacing it with an implant. It also is not as easy as removing all the breast tissue and getting implants, there is a period of recovery and preparation for the implant after the initial mastectomy.

wow, she is such a brave woman… obviously if you look at it the harsh way its about choosing health over vanity, but in reality it is so much more than that. The psicological effects this brings are beyong one’s control, and she is a very brave woman for staying strong and keep fighting even through that… This is definitely going to be hard for Bill also so I really hope he stands with her through it all. This is one admirable family and I really wish them both the best.

I feel bad for her. She’s obviously been through a lot with trying to have children and then this. I hope that the surgery is successful and she is able to get her healthy life back. What a terrible thing to have to go through, but she’s smart and so brave to be public about it all. It just shows you that no one is “untouchable” when it comes to cancer. It’s easy to forget that stars can get sick just like the rest of us.
