First Look: Chord Overstreet Returns To ‘Glee’

Back in July we learned the very surprising news that actor Chord Overstreet was fired from the third season of Glee and after much fan discussion, it was announced in October that Chord was being brought back to the show. For one reason or another, the decision to dump Chord turned out to be a bad one so his character Sam is being brought back on the show next week to reintroduce him on the show. Click below to watch a preview video for next week’s ep and get your first look at Sam’s return to McKinley High School.

Gleeks were shocked last summer when Chord Overstreet, who plays jock Sam, declined an offer to return to Glee as a recurring character in season 3 and instead chose to to focus on his other passion: music. “I wanted to do a bunch of recording and take time to do that,” the 22-year-old says. But now Overstreet and Glee producers are ready to reintroduce Sam into the halls of McKinley High, where he’ll reappear on the Dec. 6 episode (and recur throughout the rest of season 3). “Luckily, everything kind of opened back up [in my schedule] so I could jump back in,” the actor says. Sam’s back to boost New Directions, who are sorely lacking members thanks to splinter glee club the Troubletones. Explains Overstreet: “Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele) are looking for somebody to help them with sectionals … So they bring [Sam] back to school. He tries to kind of pick everything back up where he left off and he realizes that everything has has changed a little bit since he’s gone. He has to kind of re-adapt a little bit.” One big development is the fact that former flame Mercedes (Amber Riley) has a new boyfriend. (“They address what happened [between them] last summer,” Overstreet teases.) Still, some things — like Santana (Naya Rivera), who named Sam “Trouty Mouth” — never change. “She goes off” on Sam when he comes back, Overstreet says. “She rips me a new one.” Overstreet admits he’s not sure how long Sam will continue to roam the McKinley halls. Says the actor, “Right now, we’re playing it by ear, having fun and just enjoying doing that and doing music also.”

To be clear, I do not believe for a second that Chord was made to feel welcome as a “recurring character” in season 3. It sounds to me like producers were looking to dump him, they made him an embarrassing offer to stay on as a “recurring character” and he came up with this ridiculous “I’m focusing on my music” excuse to save face. Thankfully, the Glee folks decided they made a terrible mistake — blah blah blah — and now he’s coming back. As you can see from the preview video above, it looks like Sam has been bizzying himself as a stripper since he’s been away from McKinley High. Next week’s ep looks fun … I’m sure the stripper scene above will look GREAT in high def :D

I really liked his character and I’m glad he’s back. That said, Ryan Murphy’s peremptory and um, bitchy casting decisions and the widely rumored ill-treatment of the cast has made the show kind of difficult to watch. This is because the up-with-people and diversity pep seems to be for show only.

But as I said, I loved Sam and Mercedes together and I’d love it if their romance gets some air time.
