Back in December of last year, we learned that rapper-turned-actor Eminem would be starring in his first new film since his break-out performance in 2002′s 8 Mile. At the time, we learned that Em would be playing a boxer in the film Southpaw. This Summer, pre-production on the film fizzled and it appeared that it was dead in the water. Today we learn that Southpaw is back on track and scheduled to go into filming production next year. It looks like Eminem‘s acting career is also back on track.

Detroit is in the movie spotlight with the locally filmed “Real Steel” and its boxing robots. Now it looks like one of Detroit’s biggest stars will be moving ahead with his own boxing movie. The drama “Southpaw,” starring Eminem, has a new lease on life, according to Variety. Dreamworks had put the brakes on the project in August. But now MGM has said it will make the film and Sony Pictures will distribute it. The story of a left-handed welterweight and his fight to put his life and career back together will be directed by Antoine Fuqua of “Training Day.” It will mark a return to leading man status for the Detroit rapper, last seen on the big screen in 2002′s “8 Mile.” Variety says the movie is expected to start production next year.
I know I am not alone when I say that I was VERY impressed with Eminem‘s acting debut in 8 Mile. Even tho he won his Academy Award for writing the original song Lose Yourself, I felt his acting performance was worthy of acclaim as well. I am very much looking forward to his return to acting. I mean, I know there are a million boxing/fighting movies out there but I suspect Em will bring something new to the genre. I also suspect he will hit us with more fantastic music to go along with the film. I’m glad to hear the film is back on track … I can’t wait.
