‘Entertainment Weekly’ Gives Us Our First Official Look At ‘Dark Shadows’

Meet the Collins Family

Last week we got our very first look at the new Dark Shadows film — directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp — when the first photos from the UK set hit the Internets. Today we get our first official look at the film courtesy of Entertainment Weekly magazine. In this week’s issue, EW brings us the first promo photo of the principle cast. Altho the cast looks a WEE bit Addams Family, I am totally digging the over-the-top gothness of the Collins fam. Check out the photo below.

Behold the real visage of Johnny Depp’s vampire from Dark Shadows! Last week, long-range paparazzi shots of the actor wearing ghostly white makeup, large sunglasses and a pulled down fedora made fans of the original 1966-71 supernatural soap opera bristle nervously, with complaints he looked simply too strange. Nevermind that he’s playing a 200-year-old vampire, which is strange enough. As you can see from this cast shot, Depp’s bloodsucking pater familias Barnabas Collins actually borrows heavily from the aged-little boy look of original Dark Shadows star Jonathan Frid — not that anyone would be happy to see this guy show up as your prom date either. Still, this official First Look may reassure those die-hard fans of the original series, memorably offbeat ABC daytime drama about a vampire whose extended family are bedeviled by ghosts, witches, and other gothic woes. Depp, who fought for years to make this movie, is one of those fans. “I do remember, very vividly, practically sprinting home from school in the afternoon to see Jonathan Frid play Barnabas Collins,” the actor says. “Even then, at that age, I knew — this has got to be weird.” Weird certainly sums up this particular family portrait — a shot director Tim Burton, who also obsessed over Dark Shadows as a boy, staged in the early days of production. “I remember seeing a group photograph of the cast of the original series,” he tells EW. “For me it captured the weird Dark Shadows vibe in a single image. I had a brief window of opportunity to have our cast present at the same time, the day before principle photography began. We decided to stage a similar picture instead of rehearsing, to see if we captured the Dark Shadows feeling.”

Holy moly, I am excited for this film. Johnny Depp looks great as Barnabas Collins but I am LOVING Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman. Man … this brings back so many great memories of watching the original Dark Shadows with my mom when I was little. I also loved the 90′s remake, too. I just rewatched that mini-series on cable last Winter. Head over to EW‘s site HERE to read great little character bios for all of the folks featured in this photo. I was a bit concerned by the on set photos we saw last week but this new photo puts ALL of my worries to rest. I am loving this new incarnation of Dark Shadows … are you?

I keep reading the description of Jonathan Frid’s take as the “aged little boy” … where did that come from? Frid has spent his career typically playing the heavy, the older man, the villain, the father; even in his first fledgling roles on through to his take as the priest in “Mass Appeal”. Johnny Depp may play it man-child, and maybe for a new generation that will work. But if you want to know what this aging bag thinks, start the original series at the arrival of Barnabas, and be patient. Once you become entranced, you will know what has keep the fans loyal for so many years. Oh, and avoid fandom. Its loudest are not representative of the ones who love the show most. Have fun!

Megansspark! I have been in fandom for 20 years since 1991. I was 13 when the remake came on and now I am 33! Some of my closet friends I made in fandom. Apparently you have just meet the wrong people. I actually traveled to NEW YORK last year and was able to stay in the Seaview Terrace where they filmed the outside shots of the mansion and incorporated it with the inside tv sets. I stayed in the 65 room mansion for five days with 60 other Dark Shadows friends. I flew out to Rhode Island (where the mansion is located) and stayed at Seaview Terrace. We had a bawl. There are some bad eggs in fandom, but there are also amazing people. My friend Anna, I have known for twenty years. She flew me out (because I am having a hard time financially) and paid for my whole trip. We also went to NYC and went to the studio where Dark Shadows was filmed. Wendy Willams now films there! It was so surreal. Again, my most beloved friends in life are people I met in Dark Shadows Fandom.

I do recommend people catching the original series.

I have to say I am stoked! I have loved both the original and the remake. And I know I am going to toally love this one too! I will always support DS no matter what shape or form in comes into!

I hope its a huge hit and becomes franchised!

I’m glad you had a good experience, Taeylor … a friend like Anna is a true blessing. And I do think the majority of the fans are good people. Your enthusiasm is just beautiful!
There was a weird situation around some of the stars *long* before I arrived. Years pass, & they have reaped what they have sown over the years, which is basically dust! All long past and the show remains a delight, so no real harm done. ;)
Bless you and have fun, from ~M
