Bethenny Frankel Was Lost At Sea . . . For Reals

While some of the Real Housewives of NYC endured their own fake drama over the weekend by getting fired from the Bravo TV reality series that made them famous, the MOST famous former castmember of all was enduring some very REAL and very scary drama of her own. While out on a boat ride over the weekend, Bethenny Frankel’s boat went off course and was lost at sea … for hours! Fortunately for us, the Bravo cameras were on board so we will likely seen the footage at some point but judging by Bethenny’s explanation of what happened … it sounds like it was a really traumatic experience, indeed.

“I was on a sailboat on Saturday that was supposed to be eight hours and it ended up being 20 because were lost at sea,” Frankel just told me in her first interview since the harrowing experience. “The captain had to call the Coast Guard and we were hit by a big wave. It was very scary. It was traumatic. Absolutely traumatic.” Thankfully, they decided at the last minute not to bring baby daughter Bryn. Frankel said the boat went off course between Block Island and Nantucket after the GPS malfunctioned. There were about 10 people on the boat, including a camera crew for her Bravo reality show. “We were in the middle of the deep sea with no land or anybody near us,” she said. “The captain had never, in 30 years, called the Coast Guard.” A Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed they were guided back to shore at about 4 a.m. “It was so scary,” Frankel said. “I was thinking, Oh, my God, Bryn! I’m not going to be there at six o’clock in the morning when she wakes up and she’s going to wonder where Mommy is and gosh, if something were to happen to me, what would happen to her. I was having horrendous thoughts.”

Wow. I can’t even imagine how horribly scary that must’ve been. Yes, I’m sure Bethenny at some point feared for her life … but I’m quite certain her fear that Bryn would be left motherless if she perished was much greater. That being said, these Bravo reality TV stars will do ANYTHING for a little attention ;) I keed, I keed … I sincerely doubt this was done for attention. It may sound like a crazy story (and I’m sure it’ll make for great reality TV at some point) but it also sounds scarily plausible, too. Yikes!

Uhm…Neither Bethenny nor Bravo strike me as the kind to call the Coast Guard if it wasn’t an emergency. Hate that you even hint at that here.

    • Hannah

Seriously? I love Bethenny and watch so much Bravo but I wouldn’t put it past them so much of what happens on any “reality” show is exaggerated if not staged.

Why is she even famous? I hear about her all the time and I, personally, do not get it.

    i’m glad she’s ok! :)

@chase – she’s famous because of her stint on the real housewives show, and then hit it big with her line of the “skinny girl” margarita brand. but yes – like most reality stars, i truly wonder why some of them are “famous.”

    • First of all I have sailed those waters. Its pretty difficult to get lost anywhere in those waters. Sounds very fishy no pun intended. Second what are the chance of 10 not 2 not 5 but 10 camera men and crew being on the boat. and of coarse her daughter wasn’t on the boat Also as for the skinny girl brand. Whats brilliant is figuring out that if your show runs every day (syndicated) a half hour a day time 7 days a week 30 days a month 12 months a year you mention the brand every show – well you could sell (crap brand whatsit) and get away with it. What got sold was the free advertising time she glomed onto. Think about what 1 minute of advertising costs. Do the math.

What BS from all of you suspecting this was a stunt. Apparently you don’t know the penalties for staging such a stunt and then calling the US Coast Guard under false pretenses. They investigate these things after the fact and I doubt the captain, Bethenny, or Bravo would care to undergo the ramifications if they duped the US government. I think reality TV will do a lot of things, but risking a US military investigation is not one of them. Critical thinking anyone?

The other housewives (well, a lot of them) are all trying to hock their wares on the show too, but no one hit it like Bethenny did. It’s a bit unfair not to give her her credit. She is certainly the stand out star of all the Housewives Franchise, getting her own show (that didn’t bomb) on Bravo and is now (rumored?) getting her own talk show on one of the big networks.

I may be a Bethenny fan and just overly impressed by her. Not for nothing, I am sure she was terrified, but I can’t wait to hear her explain the story. She’s hysterical.

In 30 years the captain has never had to call the coast guard and yet when it finally happens there are tv ‘stars’ and a camera crew on board. yes fishy indeed.

Trent you crack me up with your photos! Love Bethenny in the boat!

  • kelly

haters in the house. i love me some bethenny, and imagined her and jason shielding bryn, etc…but soooo glad the baby was home and mama and daddy are ok. i’m sorry, but she doesn’t apologize for who she is, and i love her and her lovely man.

    A few things:
#1 I have never watched any of the housewives shows, so idk how Bethany might be irl.
#2 having said that, I am a proud Coastie wife and I can say without a doubt that the Coast Guard would NEVER respond to a bogus call. They have highly trained people who oversee the radio waves and must make the decision when receiving a distress call if it is something they will respond to.
#3 Since the CG never gets publicity you better believe I’m going to figure out when this airs to see it!! I love me some Coasties ;)

Sing it: “ten passengers set sail that day for an eight hour tour. an eight hour tourrrrr…. the weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.”

  • Rational

Oh…if only it could have been for 20 years she was lost at sea… I never liked the woman on any TV program, I don’t think she’s pretty no matter how many people tell me she is…I hate her voice, it’s like a chicken being run over by a tractor…and I think the world would be a better place with out her on TV…for 20 years (minimum)…I don’t know what anyone sees of value or worth about her…or why she is famous.

  • justsayin

are you kidding me? NOTHING on reality tv is real. it is all staged. it really is. this was staged. this was absolutely staged. a producer took a look at deadliest catch and said ‘why don’t we do that?’ staaaaaaaaaaaaged.

    • Shavonne

If it involved the Coast Guard, as I previously stated, then no. It wasn’t.

    • jhr459

Exactly – these dim bulbs have no idea what they are talking about – you don’t mess with the US military. C’mon girls, go watch NY A-List on Logo-that seems more your speed
