TBS Cancels ‘Lopez Tonight’

Surprising late night talk show news to pass along today. TBS has announced that they have cancelled the Lopez Tonight show. Not only have the announced the end of the show but they have announced that the last show will air TOMORROW night. I mean, wow … that’s fast. Despite the fact that Lopez managed to get some of the biggest celebs to appear on his show (Prince, David Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and more), TBS has apparently decided they don’t need him anymore. HMMM … I wonder if Conan O’Brien had anything to do with this decision.

The writing had been on the wall for George Lopez’s late-night show on TBS. There was speculation that TBS was planning to cancel the show last year, but Conan O’Brien insisted on Lopez sticking around so he is not perceived as the guy who got Lopez fired. So Lopez Tonight got a stay of execution but now the show, originally developed by Telepictures as a syndicated talk show, has come to an end after a two-season run. Here is the official statement from TBS: “TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight. Thursday will be the final episode of the show. We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”

HMMMMMM. I can see how people might think that it might’ve been Conan’s fault if Lopez got canned last year cuz I think people may still suspect that is the case now. I don’t know how much it costs to do a show like Lopez Tonight but I can’t imagine that it’s too expensive. The audience must’ve just not been there to justify keeping the show going. I really like George Lopez and I wish he wasn’t getting the axe like this. It seems kinda harsh to give him the boot so quickly but … I guess that’s showbiz.

The writing on the show was horrible! I’m kind of happy about this. I’m hoping he’ll go back to doing more stand up, I miss the “why you crying?” George Lopez.

  • I actually enjoyed his show and have attended a taping. Realy bummed because he had awesome guests on the show too!

I know some people don’t like George, but I have watched his show many times after Conan… and I generally enjoy it. What a quick cancellation!!

i actually liked his show. it was pretty entertaining. it just seemed like the people who went on where so much more relaxed…
there were some great moments on that show…i hope someone else picks him up.

Something doesn’t seem right about this. Cancelled then off air the next day. No proper send off. Sussssssspicious!

His stand up routine is infused into the lexicon of where I’m from. It would be great if he returned to stand up. You know, I remember they cancelled his show on ABC years ago even though it still had good rating and did better than other shows that survived.. wonder why??

George Lopez used to be one of my fave comedians.

But then he cheated on his wife while she was still healing from being almost cut the frick in HALF to donate a kidney to HIM.

Normally I try not to let the personal life of an entertainer affect my opinion of their work. But after George Lopez pulled this stunt (and then seemed not at ALL sorry that it happened, only that he got flat cold BUSTED for it) I just couldn’t.

What once made me laugh now only makes me cringe with distaste. I personally will be glad to see the back of George Lopez. You know, the part of his body they put HIS WIFE’s KIDNEY INTO.

I mean there’s “karma” and there’s “dude…are you ASKING to be killed by a giant block of frozen pee falling from an airplane lavatory???”

      Same here…

Conan actually said some beautiful yet regretful words about George’s cancellation and gave special mention to how George helped him reach his current location of TBS. He was really somber.

Conan’s all class. He knew nothing about the cancellation. Comparing the sets, Lopez Tonight was a bit more elaborate than Conan’s.
