First Look: The Men Of ‘The Hunger Games’ Cover ‘Entertainment Weekly’ Magazine

Hungry for More 'Games'?

This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine is a MUST OWN for any fan of The Hunger Games because Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson grace the cover in character as Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark respectively. As you may recall, we learned last Spring that the young actors scored the coveted lead male roles in the big screen adaptation franchise but, until now, we haven’t seen them officially in character (who we saw Liam unofficially HERE and Josh HERE). Click below to get your FIRST LOOK at the two guys who will be vying for Katniss Everdeen‘s heart (as well as their very lives) in the upcoming film The Hunger Games.

It was a love-fest when Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) and Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) learned they’d landed the roles of Gayle and Peeta, respectively. The guys first met after Hutcherson worked with Hemsworth’s big brother, Chris, on an upcoming remake of Red Dawn. Says Hutcherson, ”I sent him a text: ‘Dude, we have The Hunger Games! I’m so stoked, man, this is awesome!”’ Before arriving on set, Hutcherson hit the gym for an intense round of training to better embody a boy who’s spent his childhood heaving sacks of flour. He put on about 15 pounds of muscle in three weeks. Director Gary Ross on Hemsworth: ”On first glance he’s such a hunk that it’s easy to ascribe a hunklike simplicity to him. But this is a phenomenally subtle actor, totally in control of what he was doing.” Hutcherson and Lawrence have become playful friends, but he’s a little concerned about the payback she might give him for a prank he played on her. ”I’m sure she’s going to pay me back,” says Hutcherson. ”I’m just terrified because she’s someone I can see taking it to the next level, and somebody could get hurt.” Hemsworth and Hutcherson may be rivals on screen, but they bonded hard during their weeks on set together. ”I think it’s going to blow people’s minds when they see that Peeta and Gale are actually best friends in real life,” says Hutcherson.

OMG … I love this so much. As you may recall, we got our first look at Jennifer Lawrence in character as Katniss Everdeen on the cover of EW back in May … so EW is doing an AMAZING job of giving us the best Hunger Games coverage around. I think I’m warming up to Hutcherson as Peeta … as I’ve said many times before, my heart was set on Hunter Parrish getting the role but … now that I see the guys side-by-side, I’m OK with his casting. These photos are great. This is a nice little snack to enjoy for a while until we get our next Games update. What do y’all think of these photos? Do you love?

all I have to say is…OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG….x 100. My mom actually turned me on to these books last year. I was like “sure mom, you read a good book, yah right!” But I devoured the 3 books in one weekend and now am reading them to my husband and baby. I have not been so captivated by a story since maybe Harry Potter which is saying a lot. I am so excited for the film and cannot wait for Suzanne Collins to write a new book!

    • @Amber — I know! Any new ‘Hunger Games’ news is cause for huge excitement for me. I’m really looking forward to this film franchise.

  2. Katie

I was so excited when I saw these photos this morning! I have been dying for more stuff on the movies. They both look great. Can’t wait for more :).

  3. Karly

LOVE!!! I cannot even control my excitement for this movie to come out! I was a little skeptical about Josh Hutchenson playing Peeta, but he looks alright in these pictures. I just Really hope he can deliver! Yay!! :D

  4. cmc

Wow. I’m sold. I could not even remotely picture Josh Hutcherson as Peeta when we first heard the casting news but yeah I totally see it now! I’m really excited for this movie and hope hope hope it lives up to the books!

  5. Liam doesn’t look very good in those pictures!! Josh does!!

  6. krissy

I am loving these pictures! I think they cast it perfectly. I saw Josh in The Kids are All Right, and he really has this geniunely decent vibe to him. IMO, Peeta’s character is someone she loves for who he is, not how he looks. I think Josh will nail that.

I am so excited for this movie, I can’t believe I have to wait so long to see it!

  7. Amber

I was skeptical about Josh too but he is a lot more grown up and has buffed up a lot for the role. With the blond hair he looks pretty good. Now I need to see if I connect with him as Peeta. I think Hemsworth is a cutie so he was a sure win as Gale in by book. Now I am dying to see Sutherland as President Snow, I think he will be amazing.

  8. sarahhh

almost didn’t recognize Liam without his blonde hair. squeeeee i’m excited! keep the pictures coming! :)

  9. CHASE

I just finished Mockingjay yesterday! Anyways, I KNEW Josh would be perfect for Peeta despite everyone else hating the idea. I had no idea Josh was that tall… Liam is, like, about 6’2″/6’3″ and Josh isn’t really that far behind him in height. Also, Liam looks good as Gale, just as I’d imagined. Woot! I’m so excited but it seems like such a long time from now. : (

  10. Dianna

I’m really glad they went for a sandy blonde and not a platinum. Josh looks great! I’m really looking forward to seeing him.

  11. Claire

I have been dying over these photos since yesterday! I have been on board with Josh as Peeta since he was cast. He looks PERFECT in these photos. SO EXCITED. I love the stills that are in the magazine. It’s all really coming to life… Oh my gosh.

  12. Lisa Lisa

Ahhhhh! I was so skeptical and worried about the casting, but I am DYING over these pictures! They both look great!

  13. JeniLee

Josh looks a little more muscle-y than I pictured but they look decent

I’m just worried that to compete with Twilight they are gonna over dramatize this love triangle that is really very non existent in book 1.

I am breaking this up into a couple comments because this thing seems to have a limit on the number of characters I can write here, but it’s not telling me what the limit is or giving me any kind of error. Instead, my post just doesn’t show up after I hit “submit”. Anyway this is the first part:

Nice, I am DEFINITELY picking up a copy of this one … I missed out on the first Hunger Games cover in May because it was before I had read the books!! I have been a bit worried about Josh Hutcherson as Peeta because I just saw The Kids Are All Right a few weeks ago and he plays SO young and immature in that movie, that it’s really hard for me to see him in the Peeta character (but I haven’t seen him in anything else, so I have to assume/hope he is capable of playing other types of characters as well). ;-)

    • Rachael

Well … I had a second part of this comment but it won’t let me post it … and it’s not that long. So I dunno what the problem is but I guess I give up!!

  15. katy

i cant wait for the movie to come out!!!

  16. YAY! I loved the hunger games! Josh is perfect and if u saw him in bridge to teribethea U WOULD LOVE HIM FOR THIS PART! They have almost the same traits! BTW he’s ALOT younger in that though. Gale is perfect! EXACTLY like I imagined! We NEED a book 4! If anyone know Suzan Collins then tell her she has to write another book to the sereis. Don’t change any characters in the sequel though. That just confuses me! Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! I can’t wait! BTW I’m TEAM PEETA ALL THE WAY! Who’s with me?!?!?!?
