Emma Watson Will Play Belle In Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Beauty And The Beast’

In the wake of all the news about the 2 live action adaptation films based on Snow White comes news that plans are in the works for visionary director Guillermo del Toro to bring the classic Beauty and the Beast tale to the live-action big screen. It is being reported today that Emma Watson, who rose to fame in the Harry Potter films, has secured the lead role as Belle (ie. the Beauty). Considering del Toro is directing, I don’t expect that this new version of Beauty and the Beast will be at all similar to the animated film produced by Disney in the early 90’s.

Emma Watson will star in a film adaptation of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. The ‘Harry Potter’ actress will take the lead role in a new version of the traditional fairy tale, to be made by director Guillermo del Toro. The film’s producer, Denise Di Novi, told comingsoon.net about the casting, but little else about the film is known at present. The movie is likely to be Emma’s first lead role after ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′ – the last film in the series – which went into cinemas last week. The 21-year-old star recently told how she is keen to play characters who promote strong role models to young girls. She said: “I feel like young girls are told they have to be this kind of princess and be all this sweet stuff. It’s all bullshit. I identify with more of being a warrior princess, so if I had to be a princess, I’d have to kick some ass first. That would have a lot of people terrified.” While she has no leading roles lined up, Emma does have two smaller parts in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ and ‘My Week with Marilyn’, both set for release within the next year. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has been adapted into film a number of times, including an animated version by Walt Disney in 1991 and in a modern take starring Alex Pettyfer titled ‘Beastly’ earlier this year.

Ugh … Beastly was such a horribly GASTLY film, it doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned … ever. As you may recall, we learned in early June that del Toro is also working on a live-action fairy tale movie based on Pinnochio … but I think I am more excited by this Beauty and the Beast news. Not only is it one of my fave stories but I am REALLY thrilled that Emma Watson got the lead role. del Toro will make a fantastically dark film, I know it. And Emma Watson will make a superb leading lady. Great news all around!!

I’m pretty much cool with any del Toro movies being made, but with EW in the lead?! Count me in!! :)

    • Jess

      Count me in as well!!

Any word on who the “beast” will be? IMO i’d loooove Tom Hardy! Not only is Tom a brilliant actor who can basically become any character, but I’d be particularly interested what he could become under del toro’s guidance

    • Sara

OOOOH I second your notion! ;)

    • Breanna

I think in should be Tom Felton. I mean hello, I met the guy and watched interveiws of him. He is so no where near who he plays in the Harry Potter films.

  • Chris

Whoa… her part is NOT small in “Perks.” Hello, she’s Sam for crying out loud. That’s a pretty significant part. Whoever wrote the article needs to fact check (obviously not Trent, but whoever wrote the original article).

This could be pretty cool, though! del Toro is brilliant.

Agreed. Same thing with Beastly. It was based on the book Beastly, not directly off of Beauty and the Beast.

Yes! Beauty and the Beast is my favourite story and Emma is one of my favourite actress, who’d play the Beast?

  • Nicola

Emma is so stunning, she’d be perfect to play Belle. I don’t care what people say about her acting in HP either, I think she has been the strongest of the trio for the past few films. Congrats to her!

Well as long as it is directed better than Red Riding Hood, ughhh… I enjoy Emma, so I’m looking forward to it… she’d make a gorgeous Belle.

  • carma

Yes! This is perfect! She’s Belle!

  • Breanna

Emma is my top fav actress. She would be perfect for this film. She was Belle all this time in the first place.
