Shania Twain Opens Up About Her Marital Woes On ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’

"I figured mentally that I would never sing again"

Shania Twain, who split from her husband Robert Mutt Lange back in 2008 after he cheated on her with her best friend, made an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show yesterday to open up about the sad end of her last marriage and the happy new beginning of her new marriage to Frédéric Thiébaud. Twain, who has her own show titled Why Not? on Oprah‘s OWN network, spoke very candidly about the past few years of her personal life and revealed that the betrayal that she suffered almost silenced her singing career forever.

Country singer Shania Twain has revealed that she was so shattered by the collapse of her marriage that she feared she would never sing again. In her first TV interview in five years, Twain told Oprah Winfrey that she became ‘an emotional mess’ when she found out in 2008 that her best friend and her husband had fallen for each other. ‘I figured mentally that I would never sing again,’ the five-time Grammy Award winner told Winfrey. Twain said she not only lost her husband, but her producer and co-writer when she split with in Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange after he ran off with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud. ‘I hadn’t written a song without this man in 14 years….How do I even get started?,’ she said in an interview won The Oprah Winfrey Show. Twain, whose 1997 album Come on Over was a huge crossover hit, revealed that she also suffers from dysphonia, an ailment where the muscles squeeze the voice box. ‘My fears and anxieties throughout my whole life have been slowly squeezing my voice,’ Twain told Winfrey. ‘I was losing it slowly and progressively.’ Twain chronicles the demise of her 14-year marriage and her fight to get her voice back in a new book ‘From This Moment On’ and a documentary series ‘Why Not?’ that debuts on Sunday on Winfrey’s cable TV network OWN … In her memoir and TV documentary, the Canadian singer recounts how she grew up poor and witnessed her step-father physically abuse her mother on a regular basis only to see them both die in a car accident, leaving Twain to raise her siblings. Twain called her husband’s betrayal ‘a trigger crisis,’ and ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back of something that had already been building.’ Eventually, Twain found solace with Frederic Thiebaud, the husband of the woman who was once her best friend. The two married on January 1.

I first heard about Shania‘s sad childhood life on VH1‘s Behind the Music … but I can’t help but be curious about the cheating event that caused the end of her marriage. It is insane to me that Mutt would cheat on Shania with her best friend … and that Shania would find love with the ex-husband of that best friend. It’s a weird real life version of Wife Swap. It is my sincere hope that Shania will be able to make music again. She was one of my faves and I really look forward to her return to the music world. If you would like to watch Shania‘s full interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, you can so so HERE or on You Tube. Be warned, tho … the You Tube clips are distorted and reversed so that they won’t be removed from the site. It’s kind of difficult to pay attention to the actual interview thru the annoying distortion but if you want to watch the video, you gotta endure the distortion.

It is really bizarre she ended up marrying Frederic, but it is also totally understandable in my mind. The four of them were great friends so it’s natural Shania and Frederic would get together to make sure the other was ok and console one another. A budding love/romance is not that unlikely to happen. I wish her the best.

  2. watched it yesterday and i was blown away with her strength to talk about such a touchy subject. i can’t even begin to think if my HUSBAND (not even boyfriend) cheated with my best friend. don’t know what i would do. but i’m glad she finally found happiness again. and i, too hope she will make msuic again.

It was a kind of America’s Sweethearts situation. Shania wasn’t exactly nice to her husband and best friend, so it was natural for them to find solace with each other. It’s funny to see the media portray Shania as a victim when all parties were at fault.

Oh my. Is that true? In that case, it seems that everyone is better off now.

    • @Madeleine — If Shania’s ex-husband and best friend were so miserable then they should’ve divorced their partners FIRST and then “found solace” in one another.

ummm….why do you say that with such certainty?? do you know them personally?? I’ve never heard any bad press about Shania or her marriage….PS-If she’s such a biotch then why did her best friends husband (who knows her just as well as her/his ex did) end up married to her???

Mutt doesn’t strike me as someone who would put up with crap from anyone.

I’ve never read anything about Shania being a bitch to her husband or anyone else. She’s tried to live her life outside of the celebrity world. She and her husband moved to Switzerland to live a normal life. I believe their marriage just fell apart – one, or both of them, just fell out of love. It happens. I do agree with the person who said the marriages should have been ended before the extramarital affairs started.
I personally love Shania and not only because she’s a fellow Canadian, but because I think she has an amazing voice and she seems so real. She makes music and does appearances to promote books/albums but other than that, we really don’t see her.

I am so glad she found love again. How could anyone cheat on Shania she seem so real and unpretentious as a person. She even tried to live her life outside of the celebrity world to give her son normalcy. Mutt sure made the biggest mistake of his life. I know he had been co-producing and co-writing with her for the last 14 years but i believe Shania’s new album will kick **** even without his help!

    All the best Shania!
