FIRST LOOK: Lindsay Lohan Does ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ [UPDATE]

Lindsay Lohan, who went to court last Friday to begin proceedings leading up to the start of her theft case and got slapped with a 120-day jail sentence for probation violation (which she is now appealing), made a surprise visit to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno here in LA last night to give not only her first interview since being sentenced to jail time (again) but her first TV interview in ages! Because she recently nabbed a role in the Gotti biopic, she had something other than jail to talk about so the interview (which was taped yesterday and will air tonight) was kind of a win/win for both Lindsay and Leno.

Lindsay Lohan apparently received a standing ovation from the crowd after a candid interview on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. In an appearance filmed to air on the US talk show tonight the host asked the troubled actress about touchy subjects including her court appearance and brief jailing, her family and what she’s learned from her experiences. The Mean Girls actress is a late addition to the show, knocking a scheduled guest, Broadway and Glee star Kristin Chenoweth, to another date. Lilo apparently told Leno she found the sentence ‘shocking’ and said it her left her ‘kind of numb.’ Leno asked Lohan, ‘At what point did you realize, ‘Oh my God, I could lose this, this could slip away from me?” ‘I think that when, you know, being young and being in the position I was in, you don’t really take the time to appreciate what you have and it’s all kind of a whirlwind, and people make decisions for you,’ Lohan said. ‘But I’m not a kid anymore – I’m 24, I’ve made a lot of mistakes and I recognize that. I’m in the clear now, and as long as I stay focused, I can achieve what I want to achieve.’ The 24-year-old also talked about playing the wife of John Gotti Jr. in the crime family movie, Gotti: Three Generations … The actress is currently on bail after spending five hours in the Lynwood Correctional Facility on Friday following the preliminary hearing into her alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace. Lohan will be appealing the sentence, although legal experts say it is unlikely she will win it. Producer Nathan Folks, a friend of Lindsay’s, told that she is ‘upset’ over the 120 days jail she has been sentenced to. ‘She is angry because she has been working so hard on turning her life around,’ Folks said, insisting Lohan is clean and sober. A Los Angeles judge sentenced Lindsay to 120 days for violating her probation by taking a designer necklace, a charge the judge reduced from felony grand theft to a misdemeanour.

HMMM … it sounds like Lindsay gave all the right answers to the softball questions thrown at her. It’s interesting that she acknowledges that she made “a lot of mistakes” but the real test of her character will be how she plans to PAY for those mistakes. The girl has professed how sorry she is for everything over and over and over … ad naseum … and, yet, she continues to get into trouble with the law. Could this be the turning point in her life that will set her on the straight and narrow? It’s possible … unlikely … but possible. And how, you may be asking, did Leno manage to score this interview with L. Lo when so many other talk shows wanted her too? Well, it turns out that Lindsay is the one that chose Leno … according to TMZ, she is “grateful” to the way he has treated her over the years so she wanted to repay with this interview:

Jay Leno won the battle for Lindsay Lohan because the actress feels “grateful” for the way he’s treated her over the years … Lohan pre-taped an episode of “The Tonight Show” yesterday … set to air tonight … and according to reports, she received a standing ovation when she walked on to the set. Sources connected to Lohan tell us Lohan has been receiving several offers to appear on several talk shows since she was sentenced to jail last week … but chose Leno because, “He has been nothing but good to her and her family over the years … and has always been protective of her.”

As far as PR moves go, this is a good one. I’m ALL for the reformed bad girl making good … but she needs to actually make good FIRST before she can be forgiven. She may be out on bail now but she will have to face that 120 day jail sentence for probation violation at some point … and then, of course, she has her upcoming trial for jewelry theft that she has to deal with as well. She may be saying she’s sorry on TV but until she pays for her crimes, she can’t really expect to be forgiven for the things she claims to be sorry for.

UPDATE: NBC has just released a short preview video of Lindsay’s appearance on The Tonight Show, which will air tonight:

this is my first and last comment I’m gonna do about Lindsay.

With all honesty, I do love gossip sites with ALL MY HEART.
That being said, I wish all gossip sites could boycott this girl for at least a year.

Just seeing that peroxide hair, that grin on her face, that “court drama”… every single day makes me sick!
Like I said, I do love gossip blogs and I don’t care about a little celebrity over-exposure, but in her case, it’s just too much!
It’s like someone is force-feeding me with the same thing every single day.
I know the solution for this problem would be not to see gossip blogs in the first place, but it’s impossible since I do love other celebs.

I know a lot of people have already said this, but I just wish she could just go away… for at least a short period of time.

    • Molly

I completely agree with you!!! With all of the tabloids surrounding her I feel that its only making things worse with kids thinking that they can get away with the crimes Lindsay has done.

    • Mr. Gyllenhaal

Well said!! She isn’t going to change. She needs to take responsiblity for her past discretions and do the time and then and only then she can truly move forward!! Just because she has a good month doesn’t alleviate all the prior problems.

    • canaussiegirl

While I may agree with you, it is difficult to boycott someone whose mother has certain blogs on speed dial…….

  • sarahhh

i think that jail could be good for her. she’ll have time to think about her life (and won’t be in the tabloids) she made some REALLY bad choices & now she has to pay for the.

  • Nate

When “The Law” has it’s claws in you it is nearly impossible to stay out of trouble. Ask any black man. Lindsay is a black man.

    • Janaegal

@ Nate- That is the most ridiculous thing I have read in a long time. And I just read this post on Lindsay Lohan, so that’s saying a lot.

    • Kali

@Nate – hahahaha. I don’t really feel you on that one but it’s still pretty funny.

  • Janaegal

Sorry I thought I could leave it at that, but I can’t. Black men and women are continually targeted for a preconcieved stereotype, which is based soley on their skin color. As a woman who is in fact half black, I can attest to that. However, Lindsay Lohan is constantly in trouble with the law because she is a silly brat who feels entitled to everything and thinks there are zero consequences for her actions. She is NOT being picked on becuase she is a celebrity, she is in constant trouble because of the choices that SHE makes. Your absolute ignorance astounds me.

It looks to me like Nate was joking…

On Lindsay- um, how was her carefully scripted response an answer to the question she was asked? Sounds like she rerouted what she was asked so she could give one of her publicist-approved sound bites.

  • Capt. Crunch Jr.

ohhh give me a break. she recognizes nothing.

AND bumping out a Glee kid!! Just another spoiled brat move. She just could NOT WAIT another day for this.

    Also: Team Coco

    …okay I’m done now lol.

  • Lacey

Man I wish Letterman interviewed her instead of Leno. First, I’m Team Coco. Second, do you remember when Letterman interviewed Paris Hilton and made her cry? I wish people would quit playing to Lindsay and just ask her the questions we all want to hear.

  • rOXy

Sorry, I couldn’t hear the clip. I was snoring too loud.

  • SuzieB

Part of me is routing for Lindsay! Really wants Lindsay to straighten out her act, get it together and go on and lead a successful productive life like Robert Downey Jr. did.

The other part of me, just wants her to just go away already!! And take her whole damn annnnoying family (especially her lunatic parents) with her!!! She can leave the unannoying, somewhat hot brother though.

  • Lisa

And Kristin Chenoweth (sp?) was bumped for LiLo! It just shows that ratings are all that matter and our society eats this stuff up. Sigh! Another example of rewarding bad behavior. Sorry, I’m over it!

    • blaqfury

I totally agree!!! I am so disgusted about this.
As a HUGE fan of Kristin Chenoweth since Wicked and solidified on Pushing Daisies, I am appalled at the actions of Jay Leno…

I can recall any scandal involving Kristin, but i guess shows would rather, punish the good and reward the bad. Absolutely ridiculous.

  • Taya

I’m tired of Lindsay. if she were really getting her act together she would shut up and sit down for a little while.

  • ella

ok i’m confused about her having already been sentenced to 120 days for violating her probation.

wouldn’t she have only violated her probation if she actually committed a crime? and since she hasn’t been found guilty yet, how can she have been sentenced for violating her probation already?

it seems kind of unfair. i’m not saying i think lindsay is innocent. i just don’t understand how you can be sentenced to jail for doing something that you haven’t been convicted of doing yet.

    • @ella — Unlike a normal conviction, Lindsay has ALREADY been sentenced for a crime. Part of her sentence is probation. If you get arrested while on probation, you are in violation of your original sentence. She got arrested, she is in violation. She is going to appeal and will likely lose. It’s not unfair, it’s part of her punishment for the LAST crime.

    • ella

I guess that makes sense. The reason why I said that it seems unfair is not that I feel sorry for Lindsay. It just seems like it would leave people really vulnerable, like cops could arrest you based on nothing and you’d still have to go to jail even though you did nothing wrong.

Again, that’s more of a general concern. In this particular case, Lindsay was obviously arrested for a reason.

  • c-word

i have NO pity for this girl. once again, she had the world at her finger tips and decided to throw it all away… and it’s not like this is the first time that she’s been to jail, rehab, etc… she’s always “sorry” but not for her actions; she’s sorry because she got CAUGHT. she’s an adult, and though we ALL make mistakes, it shows maturity when you take responsibility for your actions and pay the consequences. i would have a lot more respect for her if she just took her sentence with dignity, instead of prolonging the inevitable. it’s amazing that she’s already gotten away with so much, so far… it’s sad, really.

  • c-word

and i agree with will – as much as i LOVE gossip blogs (especially yours, trent), i’m kinda sick of hearing about her. it’s all the same sh*t, just a different day/ crime. i’d rather hear about a new movie role that she accepted and that is actually being FILMED than how much time she’s going to spend in the slammer this time around ;)

  • amanda

    in the clear now? lol.
she ALWAYS says shes an adult and makes mistakes and learns frmo them.

her interviews are always sooo boring with the same answers. same with her moms (why does she give interview again??>?) seriously. why is dina lohan on talk shows? lol. this family is CRAZY.
you dont see beyonces dad making interviews? not that i know of at least.
