In March we learned that Jennifer Lawrence won the coveted lead role as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming film adaption of the hugely successful novel The Hunger Games. A few weeks ago, we learned that the male leads Peeta and Gale will be played by actors Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth respectively. Today we learn from Entertainment Weekly magazine that the characters Rue and Thresh, the tributes from District 11, have been cast as well. Newcomers Amandla Stenberg and Dayo Okeniyi will play Rue and Thresh in the big screen adaptation.
Lionsgate has set its sights on District 11: EW has confirmed exclusively that the studio has cast Hollywood newcomers Dayo Okeniyi and Amandla Stenberg as Thresh and Rue in the adaptation of the Suzanne Collins trilogy, directed by Gary Ross. Okeniyi, playing the intimidatingly strong tribute, has appeared in a short called Eyes to See and an upcoming horror film, Slew Hampshire. Stenberg, who is on board as Katniss’ arena ally Rue, has roles in the September’s Colombiana and the telefilm Taste of Romance. The Hunger Games is due to release March 23, 2012.
These are 2 of my fave characters of The Hunger Games, and altho I don’t know either Amandla or Dayo’s work, they sure look the parts they have been cast to play. There has been a lot of talk about having Willow Smith play the role of Rue but clearly that’s not the way the studio wanted to go. There are still 2 sets of tributes from Districts 1 – 10 to be cast — 20 more roles … PLUS, other major roles like Katniss’s family, Haymitch and more. I’m really curious to see who else will get a role in The Hunger Games. Any casting news, to be honest, is exciting for me. I wonder who’ll get cast next. As for these two actors, what do you think of their casting in The Hunger Games?
