Betty White Lands A New TV Show With NBC

Betty Makes the Move To Reality TV

Great news, Betty White fans!! Our favorite Golden Girl is returning to NBC!! No, she won’t be hosting another ep of Saturday Night Live (at least, not yet) but she is getting her own TV show from the network. Betty White is making the transition to reality TV with a new candid camera-like prank show that is called Betty White’s Off Their Rockers where senior citizens play pranks on young people. Um, does this sound brilliant or what?

NBC will broadcast “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” (working title) a new hidden-camera comedy show hosted and executive-produced by seven-time Emmy Award winner Betty White, it was announced today by Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios. The series of 12 half-hour episodes will be produced by Kinetic Content, the new company run by Chris Coelen (“Secret Millionaire”). Known throughout Europe as “Benidorm Bastards,” “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” follows a band of seven senior citizens who make it their mission to play pranks on unsuspecting younger people. “Betty White is a comedic genius who escalates hilarity in any situation,” said Telegdy. “Viewers will thoroughly enjoy watching her pull one over on the unsuspecting youth of America.” “People have been telling me that I’m ‘Off My Rocker’ for years — now I can prove it,” commented White. “NBC is a terrific home for great comedy and Betty White’s mischievous sense of humor is a perfect fit with this format which has shattered ratings expectations and garnered critical acclaim in every territory around the world,” said Coelen, CEO of Kinetic Content. Caroline Kusser, Director North America of SevenOne International, said: “We are thrilled to work with Betty White and Chris Coelen — an absolute dream team for this hilarious international smash hit.” The deal reunites White with NBC, where “The Golden Girls” ran successfully for seven seasons. More recently, White’s performance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” earned her another Emmy. A television veteran whose many credits extend to the medium’s early years, White also gained notice and an Emmy Award for her performance as Sue Ann Nevins on the classic “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” White remains one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood. Having just turned 89 years old, she continues to star with Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves in the hit sitcom “Hot in Cleveland” for TV Land, which has been picked up for a third season. In addition, her new book “If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t),” will be released by Penguin on May 3. Consistent with the fun, playful tone of White’s persona, the original version of the series has received many awards worldwide. “Benidorm” swept the 2010 Rose d’Or Awards, winning the Best Comedy Award as well as the Golden Rose for Best Program of the entire competition. In addition, the show won Best Comedy Format at the 2010 FRAPA Format Awards.

What a great idea! I am so in love with this concept. Elderly people can be really funny … the thought of a group of older folks playing pranks on unsuspecting young folks is BRILLIANT! I think NBC is very smart to partner with Betty on this project. She is the perfect name and face to attach to this project. My guess is that Betty will host the show … but I am hoping she’ll participate in a prank or two as well. Oh and speaking of Betty‘s amazing stint on SNL, can you believe it’s been almost a YEAR since she hosted SNL last May? Dang, time sure flies don’t it? Now that Betty is back in the NBC family, I wonder if we’ll get to see her host SNL again soon? That would rule … and so will Betty‘s new show Off Their Rockers. I can’t wait to see it!!

I watched the first five – ten minutes and changed the channel. The show is absolutely disgusting! Very disrespectful and not sending a very good message to our young people or old people for that matter. I hope the show gets canceled. It certainly should not be airing during family viewing. It is not a family show. Betty may be famous, but famous for what? Being a dirty old lady? I thought she wanted her legacy to be her love of animals. That all her money from her work supports her animal program, The Morris Animal Foundation. Then do something worthwhile and do a reality show about taking care of animals. But showing nudity, old women hitting on college students at an airport, I don’t see the humor in that, it is sick and sad and not how senior citizens should be portrayed. No, they don’t just sit around crocheting, they do volunteer work and are active in their communities, have grandchildren and love life. Those are the senior citizens I admire.

We watched the first show. It was hilarious. My husband is 78 and I’m 64 and we loved every minute. Diane above. You need to get a sense of humor. We recommended it to many friends and they called back and couldn’t thank us enough. Can’t wait for the next show. In todays world, what we need is a good laugh and that’s what Betty delivers. Thank you!
