First Look: Adrianne Palicki In Costume As Wonder Woman

Um ... Is She Wearing ... PANTS?!

In mid-February we learned that Friday Night Lights actress Adrianne Palicki was cast in the coveted role of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman for the new David E. Kelly reboot TV series for NBC due out this Fall. Earlier this week we saw photos of Elizabeth Hurley on the WW set as the villainous Veronica Cale but right now we get our FIRST LOOK at Adrianne in costume as Wonder Woman herself. As you might imagine, this new incarnation of Wonder Woman comes with a new costume … a costume that makes a few changes to the iconic costume that we all know and love. Check it out what the new Wonder Woman looks like below.

Red alert! Or should we say blue? EW has obtained an exclusive first look of Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman — aka Diana Prince — from NBC’s reboot of the classic 1970s series. What’s different from what we’ve seen before? Well, how about those shiny blue pants? And blue boots instead of red ones? Compared to Lynda Carter’s get-up, this body-hugging extravaganza de-emphasizes the patriotism and seems to play up the comic’s Greek mythology. And a special shout-out to those bracelets! Wonder Woman is being remade by Boston Legal writer David E. Kelley, who has incorporated the superhero’s signature lasso, cuffs, and plane in the pilot. NBC promises the project, if picked up to series, will offer a serious, non-campy take on the DC Comics character. Along with Palicki, Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) and Cary Elwes (Saw, The Princess Bride) have joined the cast. Hurley’s character runs a pharmaceutical company that is creating a drug that makes people stronger while Elwes plays the CEO of Diana’s company, Themyscira Industries.

OK … so maybe Wonder Woman isn’t wearing pants, per se, but these are deffo tights … which is a big change to the iconic Wonder Woman costume. I thought I had prepared myself for changes like this but … I guess not. This new costume looks more like the new costume that was introduced in the WW comic books last Summer:

But thankfully she’s not wearing that hideous jacket nor those fugly trucker boots. I really do not like the costume as featured in the comic books but I’m not quite sure how I feel about how it looks in this photo. It’ll take me some time to get used to this new look … if I can get used to this new look. Vinyl pants with a camel toe seam, REALLY?! What do y’all think? Do you like this new incarnation of Wonder Woman at first glance?

  1. Amy

This show is going to be a complete trainwreck.

  2. Harlie

Rly? I could make a better costume than that. Is she going to some sort of vinyl fetish party? Fail.

  3. This is awful! It’s going to be nothing but camel toe!!

  4. Sara

This looks like a bad halloween costume you’d buy online for $39.99. “Sexy Wonder Woman – wig not included” (like “sexy nurse” or “sexy french maid”). Lame.

  5. my first thought: EWWW!

  6. troydc

It looks like a cheap (slutty) halloween costume. I don’t know how Lynda Carter managed to do it, but she never looked cheap or slutty in her costume which was skimpier.

    • @troydc — YES!! Lynda Carter may have looked a bit campy but NOT trashy. There is a big difference between fun camp and trashy TRAMP. Ugh … the more I look at this photo, the more upset I get at what they did to WONDER WOMAN!

  7. Virginia

    That is NOT Wonder Woman.

  8. Me

This show has CANCELLED written all over it.
She looks like the wrestler Chyna…

  9. krissy

I don’t really know what people were expecting. It looks like a halloween costume, but isn’t that what all super hero outfits look like? IMO, the whole idea of a person needing an outfit with magical cuffs and a lasso is absurd, so I don’t really see how this could have been improved upon. No matter what they put her in, it would look silly because it is a super hero costume! Less shiny pants (etc.)wouldn’t change that, IMO.

She is a great actress, but I think the writing of the show will ultimately determine the quality. However, I just don’t see how they can do a “non-campy” version of a story where someone has to dress up to help people.

    • @krissy — I totally disagree. Superhero costumes can be done well, but that’s beside the point. In this instance, they took an already iconic costume and made it look WORSE. If the costume was similar to the one that Wonder Woman is known for — the one that Lynda Carter wore perfectly in the original series — I know I would be amenable to a new version of the character. This, on top of the horrible things we’ve heard about the script now have me more worried than ever. Nothing that I’ve read or seen makes me think this show will live longer than one season … if that.

    • krissy

Even if they used Lynda’s costume, I don’t think it would work in 2011. People weren’t so cynical back then. From what I remember of that series, it was hella cheesy, and her costume was as well (not to mention her plane!). I think in order for today’s audience to buy it, it would have to be much more gritty, and real world…more like Kick-Ass or Iron Man. A real world explanation for something fantasy.

    • @krissy — “Even if they used Lynda’s costume, I don’t think it would work in 2011.” Again, I disagree … it would have a better chance of working because people already know what to expect and have accepted it long ago. Without question, this costume looks cheap … the pleather vinyl? Seriously? I don’t like the costume itself but the shiny vinyl makes it all the worse.

    • krissy

I think it is easy to look back on things favorably because there is nostalgia that comes with it. Lynda’s pants were shiny polyester with stars on them! Don’t know how that would fly now. I just think 2011 audiences just wouldn’t buy a mythical super hero story no matter what she was dressed in, unless it was done in a gritty way. For example, I think True Blood works because they do a version of a “real life” vampire with modern clothes, instead of having pointy collars, white wigs, and talking like Count Chocula. ;) (And fyi, I am totally fine with you disagreeing with me. Not trying to change your mind, just sharing where I think differently. Happy Friday!).

    • @krissy — It’s all love, we can disagree. I think I’m just taking this change more personally because WW played an integral role in my childhood. Have a great weekend, doll!! xo

    • krissy

You’re sweet! I have a soft spot for Lynda myself. I feel for anyone one stepping into her shoes, because really, it is impossible. She is one of a kind!

  10. perdiz

i dont like it. i was hoping if they changed it it would be to make it better and more serious, kinda like what they did to the batman costume. but no this looks like something i could make at home…

  11. dustin

i just dont think palicki is pretty enough. wonder woman/princess diana/diana prince is supposed to be an amazon princess and totally gorgeous. and i think that the premise of the new series is so far from what wonder woman started as, i am not a fan so far but i can get with some liz hurley action.

  12. Joanna

Any superhero show that gets picked up by NBC will be GONE in 6 months tops! I mean look what just happened to The Cape.

  13. Alys

I’m not watching it. The more I see the higher my displeasure and disappointment become. There are plenty of good shows out there worth our time (Mad Men, Community, Skins, Gossip Girl – heh!) that I don’t think this one registers.

  14. Chris

With a couple of changes it could have been pretty good.

If you aren’t going to go with the classic Lynda Carter outfit (which few people other than her could pull off without it looking skanky) at least keep close to it.

Cut those pants down, making them hotpants or if you insist on keeping the tights at least make the boots the classic red.

And add some more silver into the costume (perhaps the vertical stripe on the boots) and make the raised parts of the cuffs gold to better tie them into the rest of the costume.

On a side note, I just have this image of the director yeling cut and calling out to Adrianne “It’s stuck in your vag again, Honey!” lol

  15. shanny

The costume looks bad, Adrianne being cast is bad= I agree with the trainwreck comments. I had early hopes of the new series and I am completely uninterested with every new news piece presented.

  16. CL

Ewww. Its just so wrong. Lynda Carter made it work because its the costume from the comic books, and she looked so much like WW that it all made sense. When people reboot or make comic books into movies or TV series, they have a tendency to ignore whats in their and try to make it their own.
It seems like whoever designed this/made it wants to veer as far away from the iconic suit as much as possible, that it takes away from what makes WW so special. It wasnt the face that she was wearing hot pants that mde it a big deal, it was that she was wearing hot pants and kicking seirous ass while doing so.
This outfit is trashy and tacky because its NOT Wonder Womans costume! And this chick doesnt look like Wonder Woman, she looks like Wonder Teen XXX.

  17. Jessica

I thought Wonder Woman was supposed to be an Amazonian princess…why’d they pick a white girl??

  18. rOXy

Completely hate every single thing about this reboot. I am going to do myself a favor and not tune in at all ever. I want to remember WW the way she was in happier times.

  19. Sarah R.

To me this is just Tyra wearing a REALLY ugly Halloween get-up!!

  20. Hmmm. This should rather be the costume for a latex fetish porno based off the upcoming Wonder Woman series instead of the one they’re actually planning to use in the show. I’m really curious to see how long it will be on air for…

  21. Nozi

OH GOD, WHERE IS JOSS WHEDON WHEN YOU NEED HIM!!! He would have never let this happen.
    :(

  22. krissy

Lynda Carter commented! She says she is open to making a visit to the show! From E!:

“I think she looks fabulous,” said Carter, who originated the role in the classic (and oh-so-campy!) series in the mid-’70s. “It’s a new look and, jeez, her body looks fantastic.”

Carter wants everyone to give Palicki a chance.

“You know, I’m very sensitive to the fact that she will be compared,” Carter said. “There’s no getting around it. It is what it is. I would hope that people would cut her some slack.

“I’m sure there will be people who say she looks better than me and like her better than me—and that’s also fine,” she continued. “I want this story to be told again. I’m really excited. I can’t wait to see it.”

The series is being remade by legal eagle television writer David E. Kelley. And yes, Carter says, they’ve already talked about her making an appearance. “It’s not out of the question,” she said. “It would be great.”

  23. Lucille

    I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. cutitout

Fail. It looks like a $19.99 Party City Halloween costume. It should be close to the iconic suit but a little less pleathery. Maybe a rougher leather with metalic metal embelishments. Definitely no pants.

  25. I am SO dissapointed with this costume
    WW represents my childhood!

  26. sals

yikes…that is one ugly outfit…cant take it seriously. all you see are her boobs. lol

  27. Lisa

    lol it’s so bad!

  28. eiBeauty

It’s not bad however I always loved the red boots with the white seam. Why would they change that?

  29. JAmie

ELiza Dushku should be wonder woman! However Lucy Lawless would have been fantastic, but probably a little to much like Xena

  30. Her body looks banging, but I like my Wonder Woman in hot pants.

  31. Mangina

Oh man. I can already see a cheesefest with this pilot. I was hoping the costume would be more warrior like but once again the character is being sexualized. I don’t think it will be picked up for series.

  32. Lucille

I want to see the hot pants with little stars and the red boots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That´s not her!!!! I´m so sad!!! :( WHYYYYYY!!!!!!!!??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She´s my hero!!! DEK: You can´t do that to me!!!

  33. Phoenix

wow I don’t like the new outfit. I think they shoulda stayed true to the original costume. Also I was surprised they picked this girl there are other girls that would be perfect for this role and actually resembles Linda Carter lol (Megan Fox tho she can’t act would be a hotter Wonder woman LOL)

  34. Mariel

Oh no!!! and it will get worse sooner than later..

  35. lynn

What an ugly costume. The show is already in danger. This is Wonder Girl not Wonder Woman. what a joke.

  36. lynn

hahah. I just read Lynda Carter’s comments. Of course she say what she said. Deep down inside she knows that her costume rocked, her body rocked, and basically her era rocked. lol. This costume looks cheap and plastic. The cuffs looks like paper. Let’s not start on the boots and the head gear or her hair. The girl on Nikita dresses better than this and more resembles a modern day WW.

  37. tony

as many from here, ww represents a big part of my childhood and maybe thats the hardest part of seeing this. as a stylist i can say that this in other materials would looked better.

but they avoid the fact the amazons wouldnt wear jumpsuits. these are women comfortable with their bodies. and this outfit doesnt represent that.

two things: no pants and no patent leather and it would get a 100 times better.

  38. lyssa

wow dont you think they couldve found someone prettier..
and i hate this outfit..its too partycity and cheap looking..
i loved the red boots w/ white from the original outfit, these blue w/ the gold are ugly.
it wouldve been better if they stuck to the original outfit
