Lady Gaga has just unleashed a new music video for her new single Born This Way (reportedly, the first of two videos due for release) and, as you may recall, my source at the music video shoot revealed a couple of weeks ago that the video would feature a lot of facial prosthetics, a futuristic Star Trek-like setting and a birthing scene. Check out the video below and see if my source was right.
To be honest, nothing about this video seems surprising or necessarily inventive … it strikes me as just another Lady Gaga video. In fact, this video in particular struck me as very Marilyn Manson-esque. You may recall that MM was doing this kind of outlandish, future/space stuff years ago. Um … there is a lot of stuff going on this video. While some of it is ostentatious and truly over-the-top, I’m happy to see that my source on the video set was absolutely right. Gaga does give birth in Born This Way. This was the same source who dished to me that Britney Spears would be shooting paint from her hands in her Hold It Against Me music video weeks before the vid was released. Woot!! ive just experienced the weirdest 7:19 minutes of my life…
i mean…its a gaga video…theres really nothing special, you know what your getting. for one thing its way too long, i was ready to turn it off after a couple minutes. and theres really nothing going on..except a whole lot of crotch grabbing. again its another case of over hyping with her…first with the song its self..now with the video. with this kind of song..something simple – with people being themselves – would have done great.

There’s only a “like” and “dislike” button on youtube but I really wish there was a “meh” button because that’s how I felt.

Dancing?! Like 1 minute of her doing some shuffle and throwing her arms everywhere to hide the fact that she can’t dance either. All I really saw in that video was her giving birth and walking around grabbing her vajayjay.

She peaked too soon in terms of turning the volume dial up and doing crazy things and being completely for the gays. Madonna always was for the gays, but she made music and music videos that transcended that, and she always managed to stay original.
Gaga hasnt accomplished that. She tries to take or be “inspired” from more than one person and mash it up so its not obvious, and now its failing her. It worked in her 1st 3 or 4 videos, and she was GREAT in Bad Romance, but now its just failure.
It looks like its 3 different music videos put together that dont mesh well. The beginning was dumb and pointless. Just not any good, which is a shame. Shes got it in her to be really great.
I LOVE IT! I love the abstract feel of the entire thing. I find it visually interesting. Somehow, with all that’s going on, the managed to keep it simple at times. Nice balance for my taste. Loved the all dark colors, make up, the wardrobe. Not a big fan of this whole mini-movie video trend, but it kept me interested. Again, I LOVE IT! (I’m so glad I loved it, too. Phew! LOL)
hmm, i don’t mind the dancing parts, and thought she actually looked kinda good in those parts, but the other stuff was too much and pretty disjointed to me.
CL made a great point, I agree that she peaked too quick in terms of the shock factor. It seemed like she tried too hard too fast, she probably needs to tone things down a bit to keep us guessing. None of us are at all surprised by her attempts to shock us anymore.
The gap and the horns are absolutely silly.
at least this wasn’t 10+ minutes long… i do think it takes extreme hubris to make a video with a 2 minute intro (which i seriously could have done without). intro excepted, i liked this more than i expected to– though the dancing wasn’t particularly strong. brit is still best in my book though!!

I’m not a Gaga fan at ALL. I think she’s obnoxious and tries too hard to be “shocking” and “different” and doesn’t focus on the music aspect at all. I will give her this though: girlfriend has an amazing voice. What I would like to see is her completely stripped down, just an acoustic guitar, no stupid costumes, no ugly makeup effects, just showcasing her vocal skills. If she can still be “amazing” without the circus, I’ll be able to take her seriously.

Kammie, she has done tons of performances with just her and a piano. Just because you don’t seek it out, doesn’t mean that she can’t/doesn’t do it.
While I don’t think image is a good reason to take someone (anyone) seriously or not, I heard that there’ll be a second video for Born This Way, and that it’ll be an acoustic, stripped down version of the song. We’ll see.

definitely enjoyed this, was intrigued by the intro (meteor intro to Britney’s video…why? Texans are aliens?) & bizarro (yep, scifi/horror geek), loved the unicorn image at the end + neon triangle reminded me of ONJ’s Physical album video premiere; it almost felt like a trailer for movie, without giving away all the plot; can’t say i love the song, feels kinda frantic, waiting for more interesting arrangements/remixes, maybe something with more of a build? i instantly loved “hold it against me”, but the video was so weak–Brit needs Bjork or Tori to produce/direct if she wants to do random/weird right.

Yeah she is over the top, but she is more like Marilyn Manson here than Madonna. IT was a very creative video, the concept is cool, I just don’t like the horns or the gap in her teeth. I really hope she didn’t get permanently head implants or facial cheek implants. It’s gross that people actually do that. Seeing the video actually did make me like the song better. As for all of you who prefer Britney Spears, ugh, whatever. you are entitled to your opinion but Britney is BS. She has never been a good artist and she can’t sing. She reminds me of the popular girl in high school who everybody likes but she can’t think for herself. Everything Britney does is created by the studio, I really doubt she has a creative bone in her body.

I really liked the video. It is different, and I like the message. IMO, it is about how in an effort to defend things you like, sometimes you let a little of the hate in.
I went to a mid-west Gaga show where the Westboro Baptist church was protesting her. She put a message on Facebook, asking her fans not to let the hate of the WBC provoke them to do hateful things in return. IMO, the message of the video is fight the hate with love.
Oh Krissy…the message of Germanotta’s video is “Give me your money you stupid loser cutters who live in your mother’s basement and are too dumb to realize that I am NOT your best friend, I am just the public face of a corporate money machine, and at night, I laugh–LAUGH–at my pathetic fans as I count my money and Perez Hilton massages my feet.” THAT, dear, innocent, Krissy, is the message of this video.

It’s entertaining that for sure. I like the song. But I am seeing a lot of Madonna knock off all around. I am not sure if she is doing it on purpose. I think her and Madonna probably just see the art and there professions a similar way so it comes out the same (kind of) I don’t think Lady Gaga is trying to be Madonna, I think she just happens to end up like Madonna due to other similarities.

Okay–I’m sure I’ m not the first to point this out, but… In Eddie Murphy’s movie “Boomerang,” Grace Jones had a small part as a crazy fashion model. In the movie, Grace’s character makes a commercial. She starts out as a skeleton, then transforms, then gives birth. Basically, Germanotta just took Grace’s one minute video from “Boomerang” and turned it into a long video (AND get OVER yourself Germanotta–you are not Michael Jackson).
Anyway–just more lazy copying from Grace’s previous work. There is a difference between being inspired by other artists, and just lazily copying what they’ve done. But, Germanotta knows she can get away with it…her fans are the type of people who like whatever their TVs and radios tell them to like, and they’re afraid to not like whatever’s popular at the moment, so…she knows she can be lazy.

I agree, it’s neither inventive or surprising. I don’t like the song because I think it’s contrived and cliched but the vdo was marginally more enjoyable only because I am a sci-fi fan and liked the Labyrinth meet Dune vibe.

I have to agree that this was a pretty toned down video by Gaga standards. The first three minutes are the most outrageous, but once the song kicked in the video was tame by comparison. The only thing that really surprised me was how sick her body looks compared to her earlier videos. She’s really taking her fitness seriously. Not bad, but not one of her best.
I disagree, she looks like she starved herself more so than hitting the gym. It looks like she hasn’t eaten in weeks, which is probably true because she admitted to being a coke whore and drinking whiskey nonstop, even while “exercising”.
…umm the birthing i could of done without, same with the orgy in the afterbirth….. it was an alright video, it was somewhat different for a mainstream pop audience.. honestly though i did have my mouth open the entire time with a bit of a disgusted look on my face.
I am a huge fan of both Brits & Gagas and you cant put them in the same category… my heart will always be with Brit no matter what and she can do no wrong in my eyes, because she is consistant with playing it ‘safe’, while Gaga is trying something ‘different’ & ‘shocking’ unfortunatly for her though it gets so ripped apart because she is trying to do EVERY single style of music genre in a very bubblegum platform, which doesnt always get great reviews. If born this way was a heavy metal song it would make sense with the video… but it’s not heavy metal… it’s pop.

Gaga to me is what’s wrong with music today. It’s overly flashy, overly produced, over the top, but stripped down all you’ve got is a girl with some singing talent with a weird face and hot body.

i mean i took the video for what it was and I really loved it. I think that these days people are just looking for something to criticize, public forum though a right, can be a very annoying and damaging thing. This video was awesome imagery. And yes, I understand that it was strikingly similar to those of the past but honestly who hasn’t drawn from others from inspiration. There are plenty of videos that have little to do with the songs they’re for. Honestly I think this is one of those videos that was just supposed to be weird creepy and off, and honestly I love her for it. I was not the songs biggest fan when it was released, but I thought it was annoying how people kept drawing the comparisons to madonna as something negative, and now thanks to this video that is completely awesome, I love the song and im buying both on itunes. And that is the what music videos are supposed to do, try and make you see a song more 3dimensionally that maybe you were only seeing one or two ways prior. great job gaga

That seems to be in pretty much every Lady Gaga video, and some times it’s copying off of Michael Jackson (e.g. the Thriller moves in the “Bad Romance” video and the crotch touching in “Born this way”).
Also, I don’t think Lady Gaga’s videos are particularly creative because they’re all just trying to replicate something else (e.g. Michael Jackson, Stanley Kubrick films, or a number of other things from pop culture).

I thought it looked like Gaga was having a lot of fun filming in this one!! While I most definitely could have done without the birth stuff….really really could have done without it, I thought the dance scenes were cool and I thought she looked really good.
