Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins The Cast Of ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’

Who Will He Play?

Yes!! Great casting news to pass along today … Deadline is reporting that Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join the cast of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises but it is widely believed that the “talks” are just a formality. JGL is expected to be on set when The Dark Knight Rises begins filming this Spring … but the question remains … which character will he play?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to reunite with his Inception director Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises for Warner Bros. I’m not sure what role he’ll play, but I’m told that he will be in the movie when Nolan starts production this spring … Nolan keeps his films shrouded in secrecy, though he did lift the veil recently to disclose that Anne Hathaway would play Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Gordon-Levitt’s Inception co-star Tom Hardy will play Bane. What role fits Gordon-Levitt?

So let the speculation begin. It was widely rumored that JGL might play The Riddler in The Dark Knight Rises but Christopher Nolan expressly claimed that The Riddler would NOT appear in the film. BUT, it’s entirely possible that JGL could appear in TDK as Edward Nygma (the alter-ego of The Riddler). It’s also possible that JGL (who does bear a striking resemblance to the late Heath Ledger) could appear as The Joker in order to tie up loose strings from the last film … but that is pretty unlikely. It also occurred to me that if Nolan is going to introduce the character of Robin, JGL might be the perfect actor to play that role. In the end, he could play an entirely different or new character altogether. Speculation will continue until we get some confirmation. All I know is that I am VERY THRILLED to know that JGL will be in the next Batman film. He is a fantastic actor and he will make a fine addition to the cast.

Thoughts?

Now I’m getting really excited for this movie. It is going to be full of hotness.

  2. Dianna

I adore JGL. The moment I saw your post, I thought Robin. Three Batman films and no Robin? But he’ll be genius in any part.

  3. Kay

Oh my god, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon Levitt all in one film? Cannot wait!!
Oh, and I reckon he’ll be playing The Riddler/Edward Nygma, he’s pretty perfect for the role.

  4. rovheel

I was also thinking of the “Robin” part, he can play the part very well :)

  5. Sara

    YAY!!! :D I love JGL.

  6. C

I’m not sure about Robin, but I kinda think he would play a good Nightwing…What are your thoughts Trent?

    • @C — Remember that Nightwing is just Robin grown up … I dunno, we’ll have to see. I didn’t see the Bane character for Tom Hardy so that was a huge surprise. I trust the Nolan knows what he’s doing … whatever character JGL gets, he’ll make it awesome.

  7. he wont play the joker..he wont be robin (cause im pretty sure bale said he doesnt want a robin)
    but…Nygma….i hope so.

  8. JRad

I hope he doesn`t play Robin.

I feel like it would be kinda cheesy…

  9. UnderTheDark

I think that both Bale AND Nolan have sworn up and down to NOT include Robin… which makes me want to bake them a pie! My guess is Nygma, or maybe a protege for Lucius.

    • Christie

Yeah, I heard that Nolan was not interested in directing this franchise if Robin was written into the script.

i think that was bale but i think it would make sense if they added robin, i mean after the dark knight batman’s all alone and they leave off with him being a “self sacrifice”, pretending to be the bad guy, for gotham and maybe with robin they go with “you’re not alone, there are more people who care about the city” etc. etc. and it could tie a nice end to the series.

if jgl’s in i’m excited about the movie again! when they added anne Hathaway i was all WTF is this but with jgl it can’t go wrong (:

I am trying really hard not to get my hopes up. Not only do I LOVE the Nolan/Bale version of Batman, but I am a huge fan of JGL. I would love to see him in it, but I am not going to get my hopes up until it is official.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend the film Brick with JGL. He does an amazing job in it.

    • Jaycee

I agree, ‘Brick’ is a superb JGL film. Also, check out ‘Mysterious Skin’, ‘The Lookout’, and I’m told ‘Manic’ on top of the obvious ’500 Days (of Summer).’

    • AJ

OMG he was amazzzzzzing in ‘Brick’! One of my all time favorite JGL films :) luvvv him he’s an incredibly talented actor(and FOINE)…huge fan of his since back in the day…can’t wait to see who he’ll be playing in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’…no doubt he’ll rock it completely!!

Mysterious Skin was an amazing movie and JGL was terrific in it.

  11. Trish

Amazing!! This cast just keeps getting better and better! I don’t really think he could be robin though…we have to keep in mind that Batman is still in his early years technically, and JGL is too old. Nolan doesn’t strike me as one who wants to re-write stories to make them fit his movies, but who knows? It will still be an awesome movie!!

  12. Ella

Things in Gotham just got SEXY!

  13. I’m betting on Hugo Strange, with Tom Hardy’s Bane being a substitute of Max Cort.

  14. DamianW

Nolan has been adamant he would never use Robin, and this Batman is way too dark and gritty to have one. Although he doesn’t fit the size, perhaps a young Harvey Bullock working under Commissioner Gordon.

  15. sarah

Well I seem to recall Bale saying he’d quit if they included Robin in the franchise and Nolan saying the Bat-Universe he’s created is still too young to have a Robin :(

I also remember Nolan swearing the Joker wouldn’t be featured out of respect for Ledger.

I’m thinking he’s going to be Nygma, or maybe a reporter/cop of some sort (like Anthony Michael Hall’s top secret role!). But I’m *hoping* Nolan casts him as a lesser known character of the Batman comics… Like Hugo Strange or Professor Pyg.

I’m thinking he’s going to be in some kind of cop role. My own theory: it’s been pretty obvious that Batman, up until the end of TDK, has been doing good things for Gotham. JGL might play a cop who suspects that Batman is covering for someone (Dent) and is going to pursue that truth. That would cause trouble for both Gordon and Batman, but in the end, he’s just a cop trying to expose lies in Gotham. Sound interesting?
