Catwoman & Bane Have Been Announced As The Villains Of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Since November, it has been widely speculated that actor Tom Hardy would be playing the Batman villain Hugo Strange in the upcoming sequel film The Dark Knight Rises. Today we get official confirmation that Hardy will NOT be playing Hugo Strange and will, instead, be playing the Batman villain Bane. Additionally, we learn that the other villain featured in the film will be Selina Kyle (who becomes Catwoman) … and she will be played by Anne Hathaway.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Um … I have mixed emotions about this. Firstly, I can’t help but remember how horribly Bane was portrayed in the atrocious Joel Schumacher-directed Batman film Batman & Robin. In that horrid flick, he was paired with Poison Ivy (played by Uma Thurman) and he essentially was turned into a joke:

Bane is actually a ruthless and feared villain and is the man responsible for breaking Batman’s back and forcing his temporary retirement in the comic book series back in the 90’s:

Tom Hardy will be EXCELLENT as Bane, I think.

Now … on to Catwoman. Without question, Catwoman is one of my fave Batman villains of all time (actually, she is one of my fave villains period) and I have been PRAYING for her to make her debut in these Christopher Nolan-directed Batman films. That being said, I am very concerned about having Anne Hathaway play the role. I love Anne, I think she’s great … I do NOT see Catwoman when I see her … nor can I look to any of her acting performances and glean a bit of the ruthless and agile sexiness that is required of the character:

I’m gonna hafta think on this news for a bit … but … wow … this is a surprise, eh? All of this said, I have the UTMOST respect and faith in Christopher Nolan when it comes to his Batman films … so … yeah, I gotta think on this. What do YOU think of this Batman villain casting news?

  • SuzieB

I think they got this casting wayyy wrong. She’s too “nice” for Catwoman! They need someone with a little more edge, IMHO. But here’s hoping I’m proven wrong!

    • Mr. Gyllenhaal

I totally agree! Anne just doesn’t seem right. I hope she makes it work. You know who would have been perfect-MILA KUNIS!! Also, Tom Hardy semi nude through a whole movie..YUMMO!!

    • Janelle

Anne can be edgy. Her portrayal of Kym in “Rachel Getting Married” proved her acting flexibility. It was a character of anger, resentment, jealousy – I trust that she has the ability to pull this off.

    • Riopato

Anne would have to play a woman that is cunning, sly, agressive and sexy without trying. as batman is portrayed as serious, obsessive and focused, selina doesn’t come off as being so driven. she does what she does because she wants to.

    • Riopato

Who do you think would fill this role? I would like Milla Jovovich in the suit. shoe in for the action shots but she can be a little hammy in the acting.

  • nicole

i agree with you 100% Trent. when i first heard it was Anne..all i could think was it had to be a mistake. i LOVE Anne but i just dont see this as her kind of role. i could be wrong, and she could totally kill it. but i dont have high hopes for it.

  • After seeing Rachel Getting Married, it’s easier for me to see Hathaway in darker roles. She must have done something right to get that kind of casting, so I’ll reserve judgment for when the movie actually comes out.

    • Rachel

I think that’s a really good call Jess- I’ll be doing that as well :)! I have faith in Christopher Nolan in his choice of actors as he has done an amazing job thus far….. I’m giddy as a little girl for the release of this movie :3

  • I’m happy about Anne. I think this Catwoman may have a different approach, with Nolan i think is gonna be different, so i’m excited.

  • WickedSandwich

I think she’ll be great…I bet she’ll be the best Catwoman yet. It’s always the nice ones you have to watch out for…

  • Dan Baker

I think back to when Heath Ledger was named to play the Joker and many thought can he play a psychopathic killer who is a Batman villain icon. Catwoman is the same and I, like you, am wondering can she do it but as we learned with Heath never underestimate the actor. Im sure we will see a side of her never shown on film. Just like the Great late Heath where we saw a side of him that is legendary now on film!!

    • @Dan Baker — I never had a single doubt that Heath Ledger would make an excellent Joker.

  • Sara

I totally agree with your hesitation, but a big part of me is definitely just saying “trust in Nolan!” haha. Although he also cast Katie Holmes in the original Batman Begins and I HATED HER. So so much. In fact, so much so that Maggie Gyllenhall seemed like a great replacement, and I don’t really like her either. :P

    • @Sara — Ugh, you’re right … Katie SUCKED in Batman Begins. Blah :(

    • Riopato

But maggie was really good. If katie was the one who got blown up I think I would’ve laughed.

    • sarah

I really hate to go on a fangirl rant, but…

I really have to second this. When I heard Hathaway was cast for Catwoman, I have to admit I was shocked. Of all the actresses rumored to play the character, she was really at the bottom of the list. If I were to pick an actress, it would have totally been Marion Cotillard.

It’s hard to be optimistic when you point out Holmes’ terrible performance…

    • krissy

Ooooh, Marion would be GREAT! Talk to Nolan for me! ;)

  • perdiz

i think anne is a great actress. i cant wait to see if she can pole it off. she has been able of pulling of interesting characters in the past. and like @WickedSadnwich pointed out, its the nice ones you have to watch out for….

  • Lauren

Everyone’s obsessed with Anne LOL….Can’t Tom Hardy get some love?!! I think he is just AMAZING…I adore him..I’ve followed his work in British films for years, but his performace in “Bronson” is just jaw-droppingly awesome & it proves to me he can nail his role as Bane.

    • nicole

haha no one doubts that Tom can pull it off, he seems good for his role..Anne being just a shock i guess

  • Deanna

Heyy guys, remember when Heath was first cast and everyone doubted him? Now look his role as the Jorker was amazing. If Christopher Nolan wanted her, he clearly has his reasons.

    • @Deanna — “Heyy guys, remember when Heath was first cast and everyone doubted him?” Nope, not everyone doubted him. I knew he’d be great.

    • Deanna

Sorry. I meant MOST people doubted him. Which IS true.

  • Adrian

Tom Hardy wil be great and I’m sure Anne Hathaway will be better than the Halle Berry camp-fest. No one though will be as good as Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.

    • Carl

Michelle Pfeiffer was the BEST hands down!

    • @Carl — I completely agree! The best.

  • AJ

I love Anne as an actress just like I loved Heath Ledger. so when he got announced for Joker i had my doubts but was Proven VERY wrong. I hope under Nolan’s direction she will be…. AMAZING :)

    • @AJ — Nolan’s direction did nothing for Katie Holmes’s HORRIBLE performance in Batman Begins.

  • Carl

I have faith that Anne will do a good job…guess we’ll have to just wait and see!

  • fran

I feel the same way about Anne playing catwoman, I just cant picture her as catwoman. I really hope she does a good job. Catwoman was always my favorite when I was little watching Batman cartoons, and was mad at how bad Halle berry did.

  • fab4runner

I’m sooo torn! On one hand I love Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy but on the other I really wanted to see them use villains from the comics that hadn’t been done yet. And yes, Anne as Catwoman definitely scares me. That said…I have complete faith in Christopher Nolan. I hardly noticed Katie Holmes’ bad performance in Batman Begins because the story was so strong and the other actors gave amazing performances.

  • Alexia

Katie Holmes was hideous in the first movie, but it’s obvious Anne is a wonderful actress and I cannot say the same of Katie

  • blaqfury

Well isn’t this a mixed bag of emotions… I get excited about the Tom Hardy choice… then I’m brought right back down with the Anne Hathaway choice. I have nothing against her, I love her campy comedy type movies…I just can’t forsee her being great in this role… I hope she proves me wrong…

    • Riopato

watch Havoc and Rachel Getting Married. I didn’t realise it was her when i saw these

  • Emily

Remember when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker and everyone was like WTF??? and then look…
So I have faith in Nolan, he knows what he’s doing.

    • @Emily — “Remember when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker and everyone was like WTF???” Nope, I always had faith that Heath was the right man for the job. “So I have faith in Nolan, he knows what he’s doing.” And yet, he hired Katie Holmes who was a total failure in Batman Begins.

    • fab4runner

There is no denying that MOST people thought he was a stange choice. I didn’t have strong feelings about it either way. I thought he would give a great performance and I was thrilled that it turned out to be so phenomenal.

  • Jessica

I think mila kunis would be great as catwoman. Either way I’m still seeing this movie because tom hardy is amazing

    • nicole

ooh i think Mila would have been a good choice

    • Riopato

agreed but she’d have to get rid of that whiney voice

Let’s see: Anne is gorgeous, amazing, her body is smoking hot, she’s a very versatile actress, so people questioning her is kiiiiiiiiiiiiind of a ridiculous. She’ll prove all y’all wrong, etc.

  • Anne was pretty hot in that movie where she’s hanging out with the gangbangers -“black and white”? – I’m just glad he didn’t cast that super skinny girl Keira Knightley.

    • brandon

But before cat woman becomes cat woman she is meek and awkward. which hathaway can do very well.

    • Riopato

Selena Kyle was never portrayed as meek nor akward so you don’t know WTF you are talking about! Catwoman is Selena Kyle. Not the other way around! She will always be Batman’s equal!

    • Adam H

I agree with you 100% on this. Anne is great at the meek and awkward acting style, Princess Dairies and Devil Wears Parada. As for Riopato, Selena Kyle was definitely awkward in Batman Returns, played by the amazing Michelle Ph. Sorry but before Selena Kyle is transformed into Catwoman she is awkward and Anne will be great.

  • Kelly

i dont know how i feel about tom hardy’s character being a guy who wears a mask…..i wanna see his face! haha

    • Riopato

You will most likely see his face as much as you see batman’s when it comes to chris’s films. The books doesn’t have Bane constantly wearing his mask that much.

  • plinko

    lol @kelly i totally agree!

also, @trent i think that while you and other people have doubts about christopher nolan casting anne bc he cast katie holmes, y’all are forgetting that katie is not that great an actress! an bad actress under great direction will still be mediocre at best. anne hathaway is a great actress, very versatile. i was surprised by her casting as well, but i think that she will be able to give what christopher nolan asks of her. i wonder if maybe this catwoman is going a darker, less sexy route than the michelle pfeiffer one.

    • Riopato

how about the realistic route that’s in the books?

  • Anya

I was hoping for any villain that wasn’t cat woman. I am so sick of her.

    • Riopato

But she’s the only one that’s a match for the bat. And the only one that has a relationship with him that never ends! Where joker was the anitheist to the bat. Kyle is the complement to the bat persona.

  • Amanda

I think Anne is PERFECT. She for sure has the sex appeal, guys love her.

  • CL

I dont think Anne will be Catwoman. I think she’ll be Selina Kyle. He definitely doesnt make his characters the way we expect them to be, so I doubt we’ll see a nod to Pfieffer, who was really Catwoman and not Selina Kyle. Didnt Nolan say there’s another female role to be filled as well?

    • @CL — Selina Kyle is Catwoman, just like Bruce Wayne is Batman.

    • fab4runner

Yes, but she is listed as only Selina Kyle so he may just focus on her character before she becomes Catwoman. At least I am hoping so.

    • Riopato

Wrong. Catwoman is selina Kyle, not the other way around. The same goes for Bruce. Batman is always Batman with and with out the cowl. The real mask is Bruce!

    • balehead

I also bet that Selina Kyle will not became Catwoman in the movie.
Only if it was near the end.
I still there will be another female role.
I hope it´s Talia Al Ghul!

  • bloodyneptune

Annes going to be perfect. If Nolan see’s it, we will xD. I remember thinking Batman was destroyed forever when they announced Heath and my Joker.

  • John

I totally understand the whole Katie Holmes conundrum, as it were. However, I feel like Anne takes her work very seriously and would never commit herself to a part she wouldn’t be able to effectively handle. Rather than putting your faith in Nolan as a director, put some in Hathaway. She was great in “Rachel…,” so I have no doubt that she accepted the part because she knows that she’s capable of, or at least I hope that is the case.

    • Riopato

Agreed, I like dark Anne, she can do it! too bad katie wasn’t in the second movie though. I wonder if her character’s death would’ve been a sadistically funny moment instead of Maggie’s heart breaking one.

  • FC

Like most people on here, I actually, really like Anne. She has been given many versatile roles in the past and I am sure she’ll continue to get challenging roles in the future. My only concern is that she always fall short. There’s just something generic about her acting chomps that suggests she probably won’t do the Catwoman character justice (at least she won’t butcher it like Halle Berry though)

  • Shannon

Although surprised, I am extremely excited to see Anne cast as Catwoman. I think she has the talent, the attitude, and a sexy quality about her that is less conventional than what would be typical of someone you would first think to be cast in the role. It will obviously be a lot different than say Halle Berry or Michelle Pfeifer’s portrayal of the character, but IMHO I think that’s a good thing. Nolan’s Batman films are different as a whole. I remember first learning about Heath Ledger being cast as The Joker, and thinking how strange, yet absolutely brilliant the decision was. Nolan’s films aren’t meant to pay tribute to the Batman films of the past, these aren’t remakes, these films are meant to recreate something entirely new. Jack Nicholson’s Joker is a completely different character than Ledger’s Joker, the same way Val Kilmer’s Batman is an entirely different from Christian Bale’s Batman, and I’m sure Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman will be the same.

    • Riopato

So far Nolan hasn’t strayed far from the Batman books and he has shown a true respect to the current mythos material. unlike that Donner fanboy Brian singer. Does anyone think that superman returned into someone just a little creepy and lois wimpy?

    • Shannon

I’m not saying that Nolan isn’t staying true to the characters. My point is just that these films aren’t sequels nor remakes and that perhaps he wasn’t looking to cast Catwoman a la Michelle Pfeifer, but has a different vision for this Catwoman.

  • Ashley Sather

It should have been Rachel Weisz. She’s sexy, smart and snappy. She creates a sleek feline aura that makes her both bold and mysterious.

It was the same with Tom Hanks in the DaVinci Code. It should have been Russell Crowe (a la ‘A Beautiful Mind’).

  • Hudson Morrigan

Anne Hathaway is so fucking ugly, I cannot see her as sexy catwoman AT ALL!

    • Riopato

I wouldn’t kick her out of my bed

  • neil

i knew it! catwoman for batman 3. Morgan Freeman gave the clue away in The Dark Knight, when he designed a better bat suit, Bruce asked about the suit holding up against dogs, Morgan’s character said it should do fine against CATS

  • deedee

I am not connecting the dots yet with Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. But what would be an instant fail is to cast a blonde to mimic Michelle Pfeiffer’s version. I think Nolan is smart enough to make a different kind of catwoman. So may be Hathaway will be a good choice.
