Put The Needle On It
The TV Guide

Last night David and I did a bit of shopping together to put the finishing touches on my Xmas gift from him. This year, I became the very HAPPY recipient of a portable turntable record player! I’ve never been a big vinyl fan (primarily because my lazy ass prefers the ease of use that comes from CDs/MP3s) but I have been a collector of record albums for years. This year I decided I wanted a small record player and David made my Xmas wish come true.

I settled on the Crosley Keepsake USB Turntable for its portability and computer connectivity. Trust me, I know this is not a high fidelity device … but all I really wanted was a small turntable to play my records on. I never owned a record player of my own but my parents had a huge stereo that was a full on record player and 8-track player. I used to play my Books on Record on that behemoth … but sometimes, I’d go next door and hang out with my friends Monica and Adam and listen to records on her portable record player (which looked much like the one I just got). Because much of my record collection is still back home in Detroit (Tori Amos, NIN, Garbage, Pearl Jam, etc. … albums that I collected when the CDs came out and never opened), we went to Amoeba Records in Hollywood last night to pick up a few new/used discs:

The records featured above are some of the albums I picked up last night. The Smiths album is on cool purple vinyl and the Siouxsie and the Banshees disc is on glow-in-the-dark vinyl :D To be honest, I haven’t had much time to play records … but I am SO in love with this gift. If you have any suggestions for must own records, please pass them along in the comments below. I know that vinyl will not replace my need for CDs/MP3s but it sure is a fun way to really enjoy music. Any vinyl fans out there?

OH YAAY Trent! Good job! That looks like a really nice set up. As a fomer night club DJ (thank you) I have 2 professional Technics turntables. However this year Crosley came out with a novelty trutable I had to get. And low and behold I found it on sale at Urban Outfitters down from $180 to $54 the day after christmas. Not only is it USB but has a built in radio transmitter so you can tune it into any FM tuner. It also runs on 6 AA batteries and has its own speaker if you wanna play records in the park. LOL. This alo would have come in handy when I was spending hours in DJ stores waiting my turn at a deck to listen to the records I thought I might be interested in buying for my sets. Check it out for yourself.: http://www.crosleyradio.com/Product.aspx?pid=1869

I hope you have fun spinning your memories.

I have records from the 60′s through to mid 80′s that I listen to on a portable record player (30 years old) my dad hobbled together from used parts he got from various places, & I have to plug it into a wall socket cause it doesn’t have batteries. I also have to be careful not to wreck the needle because they’re hard to come by & VERY expensive to get.

I can’t believe my tastes have changed so much since then. Bay City Rollers… Ugh, what was I thinking?! LOL

I had Bay City Roller albums too. All of them actually. rofl I’ve given all of my albums including some vintage Frank Sinatra and Patsy Cline that my parents gave me years ago, to one of my daughters. I was going to give them all to a charity shop, but she wanted them. Most are from the 70′s when I was a teenager…AC/DC (I actually saw them live with Bon Scott!), David Bowie, David Essex (blah), Chicago, Dr Hook, then there were all of the disco albums..Bee Gees, Amy Stewart..tragic eh. lol

I still have lots of old albums, from big band albums of my mom’s to classic rock, but I believe I have one of the most unusual albums ever. “Gunsmoke’s Festus Sings and Talks About Dodge City and Stuff”. It’s Ken Curtis talking about different things about Dodge City, and then he sings a song about it. It’s really pretty funny.

@Trent….you’d have to listen to them at my daughter’s house, but you’re still welcome to visit me. lol And yes, Patsy was one of a kind right? Not a fan of country music at all, but she was something else.
