Very sad news to pass along today … Dexter co-stars and real life husband and wife Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter have decided to end their marriage after only about 2 years together. I first got word of this split while on an airplane late yesterday and I literally gasped out loud and frightened the woman seated next to me. Needless to say, I was very shocked and bummed to hear the news that MCH and Jennifer Carpenter are dunzo:

After nearly two years of marriage, Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, 39, and Jennifer Carpenter, 31, are divorcing. An exclusive joint statement to EW from their representatives read: “Having been separated for some time, Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall have filed for divorce.” Both reps add that the split was amicable. The couple — who met on the set of the Showtime drama, in which she plays his foster sister — married on December 31, 2008. Hall completed treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma earlier this year.
I have to admit … I thought it was odd when it was first reported that MCH and Jennifer were dating, but only because they play brother and sister on Dexter and I had a hard time seeing them as non relations. But once I got used to the idea that they were romantically involved, I really loved them together. When MCH endured his cancer battle and came out victorious, I was so happy to know that Jennifer was by his side the whole way. We do not know what the cause of the split was nor do we know when the couple first became separated … but we do know now that the couple are over. As you may know, the 5th season of Dexter just ended on Sunday and then news of the split came yesterday on Monday … it’s clear they held off on announcing the news until the Dexter finale. Since they are both very talented professionals, I don’t expect this split to ruin their working relationship on the show (Dexter will be back for Season 6) but still … it’s a major bum out :(

I was very upset when I heard. When I found out they were married it affected how I watched the show, but I adjusted and eventually thought it was sweet. Now that they are divorcing … man. I’ve been in many a showmance and it is not easy working together during a breakup. I can’t even imagine doing a show with someone I’m divorcing – and then Michael’s cancer. I guess I just want the best for the show, and the best for these two people that I don’t know but respect. Man. Color me cynical, but I have a feeling Deb isn’t going to last on the show for much longer. The whole thing just sucks.
@Alicia — I am unreasonably upset about this split ;(
yeah, i can’t even theorize what may have gone wrong in this marriage.. they only have been married for a short time and for a majority of it he was sick and reports say they were separated for a good while? it’s really odd. does anyone have any theories why they broke up? maybe their marriage was a rush decision because he was sick?
@shala — I do not believe MCH was sick when they got married in 08.
Why do you say Deb won’t last on the show much longer? Do you think MCH has an input on if she stays or not? Whatever happens, I hope the chemistry they have as brother and sister is not ruined because of the split.
@GentGiant – MCH is one of the executive producers of the show, for what it’s worth…
I’m sad too.
Michael C. Hall is the Executive Producer on the show, so yeah, I do think he has some input. But I’m not suggesting that he would kick her off. Any number of things could happen. Maybe she won’t want to continue working so closely with her ex-husband. I mean, for a marriage to end so quickly who knows what happened between them.
I was REALLY shocked and sad to hear about this … I think it was not long ago that there were pics of them looking nice and happy together … like at the Emmy’s or something … so how could it go to divorce THIS quickly!!?? What the heck could have happened?? Access Hollywood reported that they hadn’t been getting along on set all season … not that we know this is true but that seems to indicate that this wasn’t because of cheating or something (I say that since that’s the one thing that will break up a marriage in an instant).
I just don’t get how it could happen so fast. Man this is a major bummer.
Actually, guys, hate to burst your bubble but they got together when MCH was still married to his first wife. They did meet on the show, but he was married at the time. I love the show, but marriages that start with an affair are often doomed.
I read about it last night and it’s was sad news indeed. I would hope nothing would happen to either of their characters on Dexter as a result of this divorce. I believe the contracts for the main characters are up for renewal after this upcoming 6th season so I guess we’ll see.
I Just hope for the best for both of them on and off set.
omg i am so upset by this split that it is ridiculus, wish them both all the best.
@Amy is correct. Thank you for bringing that up. I was about ready to add that. I can’t agree with you more on this one.
Talk about FAST! They even had a full on trauma (his cancer) during their marriage and even that couldn’t keep them together. But I did laugh at how you managed to scare the lady next to you on the plane!! haha
Literally gasped when I heard about this. I hadn’t watched the finale yet, and it’s all I could think about :(
@Amy – Yeah I had heard that before, but never knew any details (or whether it was true). I didn’t start watching Dexter till last year and I wasn’t a regular watcher of Six Feet Under, so I didn’t follow MCH before recently and I didn’t even know who the hell Jennifer Carpenter was until I started watching Dexter (and by then MCH and JC were already married).
If this relationship did start with him cheating on his wife then yeah, I guess they are kinda getting what’s coming to them at this point. I agree that relationships that start with cheating don’t stand a good chance at survival. And people who cheat tend to be very fickle which doesn’t bode well for a lasting relationship. Lame.
BLAH!! What awful news. The fact that MCH and JC are (were) married only made me MORE in awe of their acting abilities because I truly believe them on screen as siblings. Knowing they are married and able to pull off a 100% believable sibling relationship on the show just always makes me give ‘em props for superior acting. That said, I guess I can’t expect their performance to suffer from this change in their personal lives.
…
As for why they split, my guess is that their shared cancer experience likely forced them apart. When one person has cancer, the whole family has cancer. I really hope that didn’t happen to these two, but I fear it did :(
Dear Ted:
Just read that Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are divorcing. Might his Vicey habit(s) be partially responsible for the split?
—Deedee
Dear Dexter Dunzo:
Well aren’t you a little detective yourself! That would be yes. More to come. And I don’t mean in a Blind Vice this time, either.

@Mal — HMMMM … interesting.
Can you say Awkward
@ Mal – what does “Vicey habit(s” mean?
Working together and romance how cliche ? J Carpenter is a Gold Digging B….. and now she wants spousal support and for MCH to pay her attorney fees,No F@@#$$@ing way !! They have been amrried for a total of less than 2 years and been seperated since Aug 9th according to the court papers Carpenter filed today. I read Carpenter was actively dating while they were married as well, NOT SAD AT All , Get Over It . they have, and I wish Michael and Julia if they are together All the Best !!!!!!! Go Dexter ….
