On Tuesday we learned the very sad news that Dexter co-stars and real life married couple Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter have decided to end their marriage … and today we learn that the couple have taken things one step further toward divorce. Jennifer filed divorce papers in SoCal yesterday which very likely means that there will be no reconciliation:
TMZ has learned … Jennifer Carpenter just filed her petition for divorce this afternoon from her “Dexter” co-star Michael C. Hall … but it turns out they’ve been separated for a long time. According to the document, the date of separation is listed as August 9, 2010. Carpenter cites “irreconcilable differences” in the petition filed in L.A. County Superior Court. Carpenter is also asking for spousal support and for attorney’s fees. The couple, who married in 2008, have no children.
UGH … this break-up is just so sad. I just can’t get over it. What makes the matter even worse is the irresponsible rumors going around that actress Julia Stiles has anything to do with the couple’s break-up. It is the easiest and laziest assumption to claim that Julia — who joined the cast of Dexter this season in a guest starring role — started an extramarital affair with MCH and to blame her for the split. I just don’t understand how people can believe a cheating claim like this when it is based on no proof at all. Just because MCH and Julia Stiles acted together on the show, they had to have been engaging in a cheating affair? Because of all of the irresponsible rumors, Julia Stiles felt compelled to issue a statement denying that she had anything to do with MCH and Jennifer‘s split. “I have absolutely nothing to do with the split between Michael and Jennifer. We are good friends and enjoyed working together. This is a personal matter between them, and we should respect their privacy. Although I too prefer to keep my private life, private—I felt compelled to dispel the rumors I was somehow the cause for this matter.”
It’s sad enough that MCH and Jennifer Carpenter are divorcing but it’s even sadder to make claim that he was cheating on her with Julia Stiles … who now has to go on record to deny any such thing. We will prolly never know exactly why the couple decided to split but I’ve been quite confident all along that it had nothing at all to do with Julia Stiles.

In my opinion, this is part of the problem. That’s only four short months of separation. In a very short marriage of under two years.
Something needs to change about how we as a society view marriage. I think we need to think before we walk down the aisle full stop.
Conversation – real conversation – of each person’s expectations of what married life will be need to happen before any decision to actually be married.

@Dawn–I totally agree with you. It seems that people do not think the marriage should be work and give up rather quickly. So many marriages have a shorter span than many leased cars!
Movie or tv stars are not like us, they are beautiful even at 50 years and can have many partners. We become ugly very soon with hard jobs, and are afraid not to find someone. And don’t tell me that i am insensitive, you know that is true, i am just realistic.
i live beside julia in nyc and ive seen him leave her apartment at least 3 times…just sayin.

@winderbeans — It would be a different story if there were photos of MCH and Julia Stiles hanging out together on vacation. The only reason Julia’s name is being mentioned is because she co-starred with MCH on the show, nothing more. The fact that Julia even felt compelled to issue a statement seems pretty compelling to me that nothing is going on.
I don’t think Julia did that!! I love her! The problem is people shouldn’t get married so quickly and to every person they think is the “ONE”!!!

Like many others, sexual attraction was mistaken for love, & given the fact they play brother & sister on the show, I’m surprised it didn’t end sooner; the looks they got when out in public, not to mention “talk”. Most couples live together, go out together. Very few work together as well – their work hours being, like 10+ hours a day, 5-6 days a week & then they go home together…

Here’s hoping they can remain friends like some divorced couples can. Besides, it’s THEIR lives, not ours; they’re NOT related to any of us – WE watch from the sidelines & speculate.
Man, whatever is going on, this divorce seems ugly. I know there’s absolutely nothing to substantiate the Julia Stiles rumor right now, but I did find the wording of her statement to be interesting. I guess the “we’re good friends” thing is supposed to be a denial of anything romantic, but in Hollywood “good friends” doesn’t seem to have to exclude sexual involvement. I know I’m being nitpicky here but I’m just trying to search for clues.
Either way, if MCH and JC have been separated all the way since August, then I think Julia Stiles was NOT the cause of the break-up, because even if there was some romantic involvement there at some point, it seems like it would have been after August based on when season 6 was filming.
But either way this definitely seems ugly. :-( The divorce papers filed by JC show that she is requesting HIM to pay for HER lawyer. Is that normal if it’s an amicable break-up? To me that seems to suggest that she puts the blame of the break-up on him, right? I dunno about divorce stuff though, I’m just guessing. Anyone else know?
I don’t even want to think about what season 6 will be like now. :-( All I can think about is Michael Vartan and Jennifer Garner, and that was bad news. Though the writing on Alias had already gone down the tubes by that point anyway.

it’s weird how you have compassion on this matter and laugh the cheating rumours off as ridiculous simply because you like these celebrities. meanwhile, all you do on other news stories is play up the rumours and made snide, suggestive comments about it. i come here for a quick browse of celebrity stories, but the rare time i accidentally read your personal commentary, i find myself rolling my eyes at you.
@jessica — With any personal matter like this where speculation runs rampant and we, the outside viewer, have NO idea what is really going on … I can only offer my personal opinions. I regards to the Julia Stiles thing, I personally don’t believe that she cheated with MCH just because she worked with him. I could be wrong, of course. In other situations, I never say that people are cheating … I may ask questions to inquire what readers think or I may pass along the suspicions of others but, again, I don’t know either way so I try to never make absolute pronouncements.
