Last Monday Kim Zolciak, star of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, finally came clean and admitted that she is 3 months pregnant with another child (her third overall and first with new boyfriend Kroy Biermann of the Atlanta Falcons football team). But last month, you may recall, Star magazine reported Kim‘s pregsness when they published a photo of Zolciak posing with a gender test for her new baby (it’s a boy, btw). Kim admitted this week that she originally denied that she was pregs last month because she knew she was in her first trimester and she wasn’t comfortable talking about her pregnancy so early for fear of “what could happen” in the first trimester. BUT, Kim apparently had no problem with “what could happen” to her baby while she smoked a cigarette earlier this month, well after she knew that she was pregnant:

Kim Zolciak from “Real Housewives of Atlanta” took a smoke break while watching an NFL game a few weeks back — it wouldn’t be a big deal … but Kim is three months pregnant. Here’s the timeline: the photo was taken in Atlanta on November 7, outside the Georgia Dome. Two weeks later, Kim and baby daddy Kroy Biermann (who plays for the Atlanta Falcons) announced they were expecting. In case you’re thinking “Maybe Kim didn’t know she was pregnant when she decided to smoke” — well, think again. Kim told a tabloid this week she denied the pregnancy rumors in October because “[I] wasn’t through my first trimester — you never know what could happen.” Exactly. Calls to Kim’s reps were not returned.
I can’t even deal with this woman. Not only is she happy to show off her irresponsibility to the world on her reality TV show but this photo is proof in my eyes that her irresponsibility knows no bounds. There is no way Kim did NOT know she was pregs on November 7, when this photo was taken. My guess is that she will deny that the photo was taken on the 7th, she’ll prolly remind everyone that she used to be a nurse’s aid and therefore knows the dangers of smoking while pregnant, yada yada yada. In the end she will face no consequences for getting caught smoking while pregnant and she will dismiss the whole matter as quickly as possible. The unfortunate thing is that her unborn baby is the only one who may suffer the consequences of her horribly irresponsible actions. In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kim is still smoking and/or drinking her beloved wine … pregs or not. Naturally, I cannot know for sure and except for this photograph, it’s all speculation. I just hope, for her unborn baby’s sake, that Kim wises up and just stops being her normal, uncharming and selfish self for the duration of her pregnancy … but, I fear that may too much to ask.

Before I say what I’m about to say, I just wanted everyone to know that smoking isn’t something one should do while pregnant. Yes, It is dangerous.
But, at the same time it’s easier for those who have never been smokers to say it’s easy to quit. It’s not easy.
Also, you don’t know what the doctor said. You don’t know her situation at that time. In some cases, if you’re a heavy smoker, by the time you find out you’re pregnant your fetus is addicted to the nicotine as well and depending on the riskiness of the pregnancy, she could have been advised to slow down before quitting.
Again, depending on whether the pregnancy has the potential to be high risk or not, if you’re a heavy smoker the baby is addicted as well, and quitting cold turkey increases the chance for miscarriage considering the baby is going to go into distress.
So for all we know, that’s what she could be doing. Slowing down and then quitting instead of outright quitting and posing a risk to miscarry even higher.
At the very least, I hope she’s trying to cut down and eventually quit altogether, because I’m quite sure she’s addicted to them. Though smoking while pregnant is not a good idea, Kim here isn’t the first celebrity to be caught doing so. Catherine Zeta-Jones was puffing away with a huge belly, among others.
For all of Kim’s babble about being a nurse, you’d think she’d know better. Maybe it’s one of those substitute-for-nicotine ones to help you quit? I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what she says it is, anyway.
As a MD-to-be in 6 months, no way in hell is any legit OB-Gyn going to say it is ever ok to smoke, even if you are weaning yourself off. There are a plethora of fetal anomalies that can result like intrauterine growth retardation, yes increasing miscarriage risk, increasing likelihood of preeclampsia (a very serious pregnancy condition that can result in death of mother and fetus), prematurity, etc. Kim is setting a very poor example for pregnant women and clearly not taking her unborn child into consideration
thank you @ anonymous! I would love to know what medical background ellallure has that makes her feel capable of spouting such idiocy!!!! As someone who has held an MD since 1991, I am firmly in position to assure you that there is NO circumstance in which smoking or continuing to smoke is EVER OK – the risks to the fetus are too numerous to elaborate on here – miscarriage being the worst, of course! I hope Trent will actually consider deleting that post, not to take away ellalure’s right to speech ( as misguided as it is), but for the off- chance risk that some easily influenced pregnant smoker may actually heed her words and use it as an excuse to consider pumping in the toxic waste products of smoking to some unborn innocent (ummm – nicotine is only one of MANY poisons contained in cigarettes…)
A friend’s mother was a really heavy smoker and the doctor didn’t make her quit smoking cold turkey because of the stress it would have on the baby..I never understood it but that’s what the doctor said..She had to cut back a lot and eventually quit altogether, but not all at once..I’m not saying whether he was right or not, but there’s no need to jump on ellalurre’s back for something that I have heard of as well..And, really, if someone reads that person’s post and bases their pregnancy habits on it, that person really shouldn’t be having a baby in the first place.. ;)
Uhh..Let me add that I don’t think smoking while pregnant is EVER a good thing and I seriously worry about the future of that baby with that woman as its mother..
Well, considering I know at least 4 women who have been pregnant in the past 3 years that all received that advice from different doctors in different cities, and different countries, there has to be some validity there.
Obviously you didn’t read my entire post or you wouldn’t have jumped down my throat. Miss the first 2 lines much?
“”"Before I say what I’m about to say, I just wanted everyone to know that smoking isn’t something one should do while pregnant. Yes, It is dangerous.”"”
It just happens to bother me that everyone jumps down a woman’s throat for smoking a cigarette, yet if she was seen holding a damn cup of coffee 3 times a day, it’s perfectly fine.
I agree that it’s not a good idea to smoke while pregnant. Did you happen to miss that in my original post? read into it what you wanted??
All I meant to bring up was to know the entire history and the whole story before you freak out and lose your sh*t on someone.
** Just to add, the advice wasn’t to keep smoking for another 2 months or throughout the pregnancy, it was “don’t quit cold turkey today, cut back and quit within the next 2-3 weeks. “
my mother is a smoker and i was quite shock when she told me she continued to smoke while she was pregnant with me and my brother. the doctor told her it would be more harmful to quit completely than if she continued to smoke. she did say she cut back. we have turned out fine and i’m about to turn 24 and my brother is 28. so lay off ellalure.
my mother smoked throughout all three of her pregnancies. my sisters and i are fine. i’m in my final two weeks of my university undergrad now. the idea that we even have to qualify our statements by saying that we don’t think pregnant women should smoke is ridiculous. of course i don’t think pregnant women should smoke. for all we know this is the only cigarette this woman has smoked all week in an effort to cut back.
Yeah, it’s dangerous and there are risks, but it’s her body. If women are allowed to abort their fetuses using that same argument then what they do during their pregnancy shouldn’t be any of our concern.
Also you can’t “make” someone quit. Anyone who is a smoker knows how hard it is and even the idea of a new life growing inside you might not be enough to really kick the habit.
@Lady Surgeon-if a pregnant woman is dumb enough to get her medical advice from random strangers on a celebrity gossip blog then her kid has more pressing issues to deal with then his mom smoking a few jacks every once and awhile.
Maybe she was seriously contemplating having an abortion at the time when she was caught smoking? Who knows…
@ F
What????
@Ben..ummm yes seriously!!!…thankfully for the world at large, we no longer practice anecdotal medicine but rather evidence-based medicine – the standard of care…so, while our friends above may have a few sad stories to tell about women who continued to smoke during pregnancy ,that is not how we conduct the current practice of medicine…perhaps, had those mothers not smoked, their offspring would be just a tad smarter today… perhaps.
there is simply NO way that anyone can make legitimate the decision for smoking moms to continue to do so beyond the point of conception…and BTW, back in the day, my dad (who is also a physician) thought it was OK for women to smoke “less than a pack a day” during pregnancy…thankfully – medicine has advanced enough today that we know that idea was seriously
flawed! thankfully – my mother was never a smoker!
Oh and BTW – people used to think the world was flat too…
@ella – you’d be surprised where a lot of people get their medical advice from…blogs and all!
Lady Surgeon-
Obviously, no one is advocating smoking during pregnancy. We are not idiots. We are quite aware that people used to think the world was flat and that the Earth was the center of the Universe. I take offense to your high horse attitude implying that the children of women who smoked are not smarter. There are plenty of perfectly smart people who were birthed by a generation of people who didn’t know the dangers of smoking, my roommate included who reads physics books for fun.
I’m not surprised where people get their information from and what they choose to believe. They’re called tea party members and most republicans. Zing! Again I say if that’s the case those babies have more problems then the smokes.
The bottom line is if you choose to smoke whether you are pregnant or not you are opening yourself up to a host of problems. It may not be what kills you, and your child may end up perfectly fine, but do you really want to take that chance with your own life or the life of your unborn child?
Jesus people, the point is she SHOULD NOT BE SMOKING NO MATTER WHAT. We all know this to be true, stop trying to justify her behavior with maybe this, maybe that. Bottom line, it’s irresponsible. In my opinion, she is well on her way to proving herself to be an unfit mother. Hopefully the public embarrassment of the world seeing this will help her turn around.
@ Vfox…amen! the excuse-making is disturbing at best…you nailed it perfectly!
In a perfect world no one would smoke. We all agree it is a disgusting and deadly habit. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world. It’s legal, despite what evidence-based medicine has taught us. I don’t think she should be smoking at all-It’s incredibly irresponsible. Unfortunately smoking is her choice and what is most unfortunate is that she is not the first or the last irresponsible person to get knocked up.
I’ve heard smoking while pregnant only can lead to low birth weight. This from an MD in London. There are lotso f things taht can harm a fetus in this world but it astounds me the way cigarettes and smoking drive people into insane frenzy. The food in this country we consume is beyond toxic at this point. Living in urban environments breathing toxins from fuel exhaust is a part of daily life whether you want it or not. The air is the air. Coffee, tea, sodas, all of it is bad. Cigarettes are not the DEVIL. The modern world as a whole is. I mean the woman could even have a glass of wine or 2 a day and it is fine but people would fly into a rage over that too. Meanwhile wine would be better than a vanilla skinny latte decaf which is a cup of pesticide.
