Last night David and I made our way out to see the new David Fincher film The Social Network and I have to say, without one bit of exaggeration, that it is the best film that I’ve seen all year and will likely be the best film I’ll see before Awards season next year. I know the film has been getting a lot of rave reviews but I have to join the chorus … from the direction, to the writing, to the acting, to the music — The Social Network is even better than the hype it’s been receiving:

I remember posing the first photos from the film’s production in November of last year and commenting on how uninteresting I thought the film would be. And to be honest, without Fincher‘s expert direction and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin‘s fantastic script, I’m certain The Social Network would be an incredibly boring movie about all the in-fighting that went on in the wake of the creation of Facebook. Instead, The Social Network is the most interesting, most compelling film I’ve seen in a long time. I am certain the film, at the very least, will be showered in Oscar noms … particularly for Fincher and Sorkin … but very probably for Jesse Eisenberg as well for his outstanding portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. His acting performance is riveting … and expertly delivered. The film’s score, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, is just perfection … my guess is that TR and AR might get an Oscar nom of their own. Additionally, I’m just AMAZED that one actor played both roles of the Winklevoss twins (with the help of a body double/stand in). I don’t even know how that feat was accomplished but … dang, impressive. In all honesty, The Social Network feels like a very long movie (it felt like a long movie even before the Sean Parker character is first introduced) but the storytelling is so compelling that you can’t help but want more. If you were just to read the facts (or alleged facts) about the creation of Facebook you might be interested for a while but I doubt you’d find it very compelling … it is the marriage of expert direction, superb writing and impressive acting that makes The Social Network so good. I’m really curious to hear what those of you out there who saw the movie think. David and I haven’t been able to stop talking about it … and while it’s not a film I think I’ll need to see over and over again, I wouldn’t mind seeing it one more time just to take it all in again. Mark my words, this movie will make a big splash come Awards season next year … and rightly so. It’s good, y’all. It’s really damn good.
Tonight, my friends Angi, Darion and I are going out to see Buffyverse alum James Marsters and his band Ghost of the Robot play a concert here in SoCal … which should be a total blast. All 3 of us are big Buffy/Marsters fans and none of us have met him yet … we’re hoping to remedy that situation tonight :) Happy Saturday!!

Loved it Loved it Loved it!!! Totally agree with everything you said… JT plays the great role of the man we love to hate. Awesome movie!
I neeeed to see this movie. I thought it was gonna be boring too, but I’ve heard tons of good stuff about it. And it has Andrew Garlfied, yaaay! It’s coming out end of october here, so I’m gonna have to wait :(
I’M SEEING IT TONIGHT AND CHANCES ARE THAT I’M GONNA SEE IT PRETTY HARD! : )
Saw it last night as well….. amazingly good film. One thing we found disturbing was how unappealing JT looks on a big screen……. Maybe that was intentional, but if not Justin should stick to hosting SNL…….
In spite of this (and his meh acting)… it was an outstanding film.
Jesse and Andrew were phenomenal in their respective roles.
I really loved it myself. I know it’s a strong statement, but I can absolutely say that it might be one of those “defining” movies of the generation. It’s fantastic, and I agree with everything you said!
Trent, I really want to hear what you thought about Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake in their respective roles. I thought they were both great, but Andrew really impressed me!
What did you think of JT in this film, Trent? I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see it in the theater but you sold me!
I want to see it but I can’t bring myself to watch a film with Justin Timberlake in it. I just can’t.
@Mike — JT plays an A-1 douche very well. See this film, despite your disdain for Timberlake.
I am in no way a movie person… I don’t have the attention span for films (apparently… where as I could do other things for just as long if not longer) and just feel like I’m wasting my time. However, I am dying to see this! At first simply because I love FB and JT… but now I am hearing so many awesome things that I really want to see it!! Ahhh! I will… hopefully sooner rather than later!
got dragged to see this movie crying and moaning and ended up getting sucked in after 5 minutes? Mr. JT is such a lovable little Dickens in this movie. the whole cast and story are really great. I would love if the guy who plays the richboy twins also plays Tomax and Xamot in the next joe movie.
I’m no JT fan and I will never make a Facebook account, but I think it Trent summed up the movie perfectly – it was really, really good, and I thought JT was, as well. I have more disdain for Facebook and its social implications than I do the characters that brought it about- I thought it was really interesting.
Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it – I had no idea the Napster guy was so involved in Facebook. Great performances, though.
I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiked it a lot! Justin Timberlake was good despite me not liking him. Also, was it just me or did he look extremely weird?! He looked so ugly and old and just gross. I couldn’t put my finger on it at all. Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield were amazing but I thought Andrew was better and more genuine. I hope they both get Oscar noms ’cause they deserve it entirely. All in all, I thought it was fresh, brilliant, and just cool. It will go down as a classic.
Social Network was brilliant. Justin Timberlake was so bad he was good–meaning what a good job of acting he did. I was on fire to throw JT under the bus when he started his manipulation of the FACEBOOK group. I, too, wondered how one actor played both twins. Jesse Eisenberg defined the movie for me. What a douchebag but a brilliant one. All the other films the rest of the year had best try to reach this level of Oscar-worthy to compete. I could see it at least once again.
