James Franco Does ‘The Advocate’ Magazine
"I don’t smoke pot. I’m not gay."

James Franco‘s new film Howl is about to hit theaters and to promote the film’s release he is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of The Advocate magazine. Despite what people think from the stoner and gay roles that Franco is fond of playing, he wants readers of The Advocate to know that he is neither a stoner nor is he gay. Here is our first look at James‘s new coverphoto for The Advocate and an excerpt from his coverstory interview:

As James Franco prepares for the release of what was arguably his most challenging role, iconic gay poet Allen Ginsberg, he sat with The Advocate’s Benoit Denizet-Lewis to discuss inspiration, playing gay, and how he came to tackle the role of Ginsberg in the upcoming biopic Howl. Despite having conquered numerous gay roles, the heterosexual and wildly handsome Franco feels comfortable with his own sexuality. When Denizet-Lewis asks Franco if he would admit it if he were gay, Franco replies, “Sure, I’d tell you if I was. I guess the reason I wouldn’t is because I’d be worried that it would hurt my career. I suppose that’s the reason one wouldn’t do that, right? But no, that wouldn’t be something that would deter me. I’m going to do projects that I want to do. Everyone thinks I’m a stoner, and some people think I’m gay because I’ve played these gay roles. That’s what people think, but it’s not true. I don’t smoke pot. I’m not gay. But on another level, there’s something in me that is able to play roles like that in a way that’s convincing.” Why, then, does Franco continue to portray gay? He finds these roles, still notably absent from the big screen, both more interesting and more challenging. “In this history of cinema, there are so many heterosexual love stories,” Franco notes. “It’s so hammered, so done. It’s just not that interesting to me. It’s more interesting to me to play roles and relationships that haven’t been portrayed as often.” That said, nothing and no one would stop him from taking on the role of Ginsberg. “You want to know what my agents did try to talk me out of?” Franco recalls. “General Hospital. They didn’t think me acting in a soap opera was the greatest idea. But they know that I’ve always wanted to do a movie about the Beats, so no one tried to stop me from playing Allen Ginsberg.”

You know, I can respect a man that is so at ease with playing gay roles because the question of “are you really gay” is bound to come up on almost a daily basis for the length of his career. It’s clear that James is happy to take on roles that he finds challenging, whether the roles are gay or not is irrelevant … what is relevant is the care that Franco takes to make the roles believable. James Franco has impressed me on more than one occasion (specifically in his Milk performance) so it does not surprise me in the least to hear him express his attitude in regards to the types of roles he takes on. I can’t wait to read the full Advocate interview. But, until then, I’m happy to content myself with some of the photos from his photospread. Check out some of those photos after the jump …

Howl opens in theaters on September 24, this issue of The Advocate hits newsstands this week. Are any of y’all interested in either? Are you planning to see this film and/or pick up this issue?

  2. CHASE says:

He’s a cool actor. But he does look like he’s permanently stoned, though. Some people just do. My history teacher was the same way and when she taught history it was hard to take her seriously.

james franco is probably wanted of the coolest people in hollywood.. and a very under-appreciated actor.. yeah, the general hospital thing was kinda weird, but it just adds to his unpredictability and unexpectedness..

yes, he does look and talk stoned all the time in interviews..

  7. periz says:

he does look a bit stoned but that happens to some people he is still gorgeous and talented. :)

  8. Jessica Lang says:

I appreciate his pursuit of many different interests and forms of art, but he is certifiably mediocre in virtually all of his endeavors. His short story, which was likely published simply because of his name, was quite awful and universally panned. Additionally, his insistence on being perceived as a “unique” and “intellectual” auteur is undermined by many of his role choices.
