Last month Entertainment Weekly reported that plans were in the works to try and get Jennifer Aniston to do a guest appearance on the hit ABC sitcom Cougar Town which stars Jen‘s former Friends costar and current BFF Courteney Cox-Arquette. Today, EW updates with news that the network is officially confirming that Jen will appear on Cougar Town:

Now, in order to keep the spoilerish information to a minimum for those of you who do not want to know too much about the new season of Cougar Town before the new season actually airs, I’ll keep the deets about what character Jen will play on the show. BUT, I will share the news that Jen will appear in the season 2 premiere ep when the show returns on September 22. It’s official: ABC is confirming … Courteney Cox will reunite with her former Friends costar (and real-life BFF) Jennifer Aniston in the show’s second-season premiere on Sept. 22 … “She’s going to play Courteney’s shrink named Bonnie,” reveals [exec producer Bill] Lawrence, referring to Cox’s character, Jules. “Kind of a get-too-involved-in-her-life-type of therapist. Those guys are so close in real-life they kind of do that for each other anyway. Bonnie has the life Jules’ wishes she has.” This marks only the second time the pair have worked together on a scripted series since Friends went off the air in 2004. Their first reunion was in 2007, when they re-teamed for an episode of Cox’s FX dramedy Dirt. Lawrence says Cox rightly wanted to get Cougar Town on its feet before playing the Aniston card. “It took us a while to find the show,” acknowledges Lawrence. “And once we did and once it was clicking, I think that not only did Courteney feel comfortable talking to Jen about doing it, but comfortable in how funny she thinks the show is and that Jen would like it and fit into this world really well.” “It starts and ends with Courteney and Jennifer being really great friends and excited to work together again —especially doing comedy together,” Lawrence adds. “Every day that those two talk they have more ideas about [the role]. It’s definitely something they’re both involved in creatively.”

The executive producer goes on to explain that the show will make clear that Jules (played by Cox-Arquette) has been seeing this therapist (played by Aniston) for some time which means the possibility that she may return in future eps is very likely. Just like Lisa Kudrow did before her, Jennifer Aniston is sure to bring some of that old Friends magic to Cougar Town. My guess is that other Friends alums will also be appearing on the show in the season(s) to come. Now that Jen is confirmed to be on the season 2 premiere ep, the show will deffo get a lot more attention … which is good news because I LOVE Cougar Town and really want the show to succeed. Set those DVRs, y’all … September 22 is the big night!
