Last night my friend Josh and I made our way to the Henry Fonda Theater to see Kelis and Robyn kick off their co-headlining All Hearts Tour in front of a packed house which was 99.9% gay. It was like church in that place, I have to tell you … but it was loads of fun:

While the tour is a co-headlining one, Kelis does go on first to get the party started. Homegirl came out in a sequined jumpsuit and a sparkly wig that looked like something Rick James might’ve worn back in the day. Now, I’ve been a Kelis fan for YEARS ever since she released her first album Kaleidoscope so I was really excited to see my girl live, on stage. I was not disappointed. Kelis KILLED her set last night. She sang hit after hit and got the crowd all riled up. I never thought it was possible for an artist to make a room full of white boys think they’ve go soul and rhythm … but Kelis did it last night. After the jump, check out some of the photos I snapped last night of Kelis and Robyn and check out some video from last night’s kick-off performance of the All Hearts Tour …

Kelis‘s band consisted of 2 djs and a guy on drums … and that was all she needed. Her setlist flowed from one song to the next as the djs mixed the songs continuously into one another. The effect was like a rave dance party, the crowd didn’t stop jumping the entire time. Kelis performed all of her hit songs, including the ones from back in the day (Yes, she even performed Baby I Got Your Money with O.D.B.) and most of her fantastic new album Fleshtone. Kelis can sing, yes, but her funky stage presence really set the tone for her set. I didn’t want her to stop performing. I hope this tour is a warm-up for a more substantial tour where she can have a full stage, dancers, etc. This show, tho, is a must see. Kelis was completely and utterly fantastic. Here is a video that someone posted on You Tube of Kelis performing her current single 4th of July (Fireworks):
After a short intermission, Robyn came out to perform her set. To be honest, I wasn’t all that impressed. Her new album Body Talk, Pt. 1 is really great and I loved those songs but it became very obvious to me that most of her songs sound exactly the same … I had a hard time telling one song from the next. I do give Robyn props for choosing to wear high-waisted rose-emblazoned stretch pants on stage. They looked like pants that Donna Martin would’ve worn coupled with a big hat with a daisy on it on Beverly Hills, 90201 circa 1993:

The Robyn fans in the hiz seemed to love her set … it just didn’t grab me. I was a bit bummed that after Kelis‘s HOT set, Robyn‘s came off as cold and flat. But, she did perform a few great songs … like Fembot, which is my fave song off her new album:
All in all, Josh and I had fun. We made our way to Astro Burger for a late night snack afterward and then called it a night.
Tonight my friend Tracey arrives from Detroit. She will be staying with David and me for a few days … it’ll be fun to have her here. I hope all y’alls Saturday is going well. Enjoy it!!

I hope they tour together in Aussie, I would love to see them both! I have only really become a fan of Kelis since Fleshtone but am a huuge fan of Robyn. Konichiwa Bitches and Dancing On My Own and Show Me Love are my faves, and she has some other amazing songs, but with Robyn you can tell which songs are hit potential and which songs are duds on the album.
Kelis looks a damn fool and sounds even worse and her dancing is horrible…Robyn can actually sing and does not need all the glitz like Kelis to distract from her lack of vocal skills!
Really Trent? Can you please tell us if she did any of her old songs like “Show Me Love”. i’m seeing her in NYC on Aug 5th & i don’t want to be upset :(
@Smoo — She did Show Me Love. To be honest, Robyn’s not my fave so if you like her, you’ll prolly love her perf. I was all about Kelis :D
Robyn is amazing. She is def in a league of her own compared to other mainstream pop artists. Very original i’d have to say. She’s even cooler considering she did back-up vocals for Britney’s ‘Piece of Me’ track.
I love her stage presence from when I saw her perform, she was crazy nuts on stage. I thought she was on drugs at first cause I had never seen a female performer feel the vibe of the music and crowd before.
I’m glad there are artists like Robyn and MIA around – Kelis’ Fleshtone was an instant “Umm wtf” when I heard it, its great, but so not Kelis. I was confused to the change but its for the good.

@Mike – Robyn is performing at Stereosonic as part of her Aussie tour I believe, so that might be your only chance to see her supporting Body Talk Part. 1
@J Awesome thats for that – I will do my research now!
I thought Kelis did a great job by the end, but the beginning of her set was a little bit shaky with the sound in the venue and whatnot. It’s fun to see her go in a different direction and I don’t think people will be disappointed in the least.
Robyn, imho, was just more put together in her performance. Her sound and set was pretty amazing for any Robyn fan. The two together though made for a really fun night musically! Don’t miss it!
Hey there!
Thought maybe I’d run into you at this Robyn concert like I did when she was over at Spaceland a couple years ago. :) You are right 99.9% of the crowd were gay men. Everyone was there. My name is Mike and I took the picture of you and your friends that you posted here a while back from the Spaceland show. Did you make it in time to hear Dan Black perform? He was amazing as well. I love his song Symphonies.
Thank you! Seeing Robyn at the private show AND Webster Hall!
