Janet Jackson Becomes The New Face Of BlackGlama Mink Coats
PETA does NOT approve

Janet Jackson has been named the new celebrity spokesmodel for BlackGama, a luxury clothing company that specializes in mink and other animal fur items. Janet is featured in the company’s new ad campaign which asks the question, What Becomes a Legend Most? The answer, apparently, is The Skin of Dead Animals is what Becomes a Legend Most. As you can imagine, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — an organization that works for animal rights and against the fur trade — has already issued a statement denouncing Janet‘s support of the fur trade:

Animal activists have taken aim at Janet Jackson for signing on as the new face of fur firm BlackGlama. The pop superstar was announced as the brand’s new ‘What Becomes a Legend Most?’ spokesmodel on Thursday, July 15 and she’ll model high-quality mink items in the ads – and PETA bosses have been quick to react. Spokeswoman Amanda Schinke says, “It’s amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn’t think that Janet was this desperate. Surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death to recognize that both occur in the production of a fur coat. We are asking her to think again and to donate these stolen skins to be used as bedding for animals orphaned by other human-caused disasters, such as loss of habitat.”

Blah, I have to agree … the idea of wearing the fur of skinned animals as a luxury seems so barbaric and cruel to me. To be clear, I do eat meat and I do use leather but I so not advocate the use of animal fur. I know it may sound hypocritical to some but to me, eating meat is not the same thing as skinning animals merely for the luxury of being able to wear their fur. I wouldn’t personally look down or chagrin someone for wearing fur, just like I wouldn’t want to be treated as such for eating meat or using leather … but I, personally, am not cool at all with wearing fur or advocating its use. It’s a touchy subject, I know, but I think it’s just better to say NO to fur at all costs.

What do y’all think of Janet‘s new mink coat ad? Does it change your opinion of her?

Well, according to Wiki, the difference between wearing leather or fur is really just in the details:

The leather and the fur industries are differentiated by the manufacturing importance of the raw materials used to make the wares. In the leather industry, the skin and rawhide are by-products of the meat industry, because the meat has greater commercial value than the rawhide and skin. In the fur industry, the meat is a by-product, because the skins and hides have greater commercial value.

That fur she’s wearing looks amazing. Fur keeps you very warm and it’s entirely biodegradable, unlike winter coats made from synthetic crap materials.

@Vancouverite – As a long-time vegan, I completely disagree with your statement about animal protein. I used to spout the same rhetoric until I lived a lonnnnnnnnnnng time without it. Personal experience is something to take into consideration- ideals are one thing, but they don’t always translate well, unfortunately.

I have never really had an opinion of her, so while I don’t like or support fur coats, there is nothing I can do about these photos and it doesn’t really change her as a person. As for PETA well, I don’t think they really have the right to preach or judge anyone about anything because they aren’t exactly angels themselves.I really don’t care about what they say or do anymore because I don’t take them seriously(I’m sure everyone here already knows my dislike for them, so I really won’t go on about that ha)

Also I know a lot of people who are against fur coats but still don’t mind wearing some leather products. N’ honestly, while I don’t really understand it, I think it’s because with fur coats you can actually see that animal, see some what of it’s form, what it was. But with leather products you can’t, it’s just a black/brown item. So I don’t know. It’s kind of like with me, I don’t eat meat often(because it makes me sick) but when I do eat it, I get it from a farm where I know the animals were treated correctly and they weren’t loaded with chemicals to make them grow faster. But I CANNOT eat anything that is whole or has the bones in it because it just grosses me out and makes me sick because I feel like the animal is still there. I know it sounds weird but I’ve always been like that and doubt I’ll be changing anytime soon.

How is wearing fur different than wearing leather? It is the exact same.

  7. CitizenX says:

Regardless of personal choice, there IS a market for luxury furs and I think Janet makes an outstanding model.
    She’ll catch that flack, though.

Thank you for posting this Janet News!

Fur is a luxury item. And it takes way more than one mink to make THAT coat. People who wear leather don’t even think about it, because it’s so common, almost cheap. Sneakers, jackets, bags…who doesn’t own one of these ? Sad, but true.

In the meantime, I think some people here ought to check in what conditions those animals are bred (cows, minks, or foxes, you chose ) and then killed for OUR convenience. Just because we want it so.

It would be oh so funny if tomorrow the world would turn all sci-fi on us and some alien breed from out of space invaded us and treated us like we treat the other species of this planet.

poor animals, i agree. but that looks like it would feel amazing…

  10. eiBeauty says:

Mink are nasty critters that breed like crazy and like rabbit, fox and nutria, need population control. As long as the animals are killed humanely (ie needless torture), then I think it is part of the cycle of life. Fur is the natural way to keep warm and as Eric26 pointed out, better for our environment as well in the end. We breed animals to take advantage of them in one form or another (like all farm animals). It’s just that we have become so distanced from where our food and comforts actually come from that many people get their panties in such a twist. Having said that, orgs like PETA are necessary to make sure there are controlled environments and less unnecessary corporate abuse.
