Is The FogHorn In ‘Inception’ A Clue To The Film’s Meaning?
Attention: Spoiler Alert Warning!

Okay … if you have not yet seen Inception, this post is not for you. Trust me, I had to wait a full week to see Inception and I did everything possible to stay away from all spoilers until I was finally able to see the film for myself. If you have seen Inception, then this is something you might want to check out …

… now, naturally, if you’ve not seen the movie then you have no idea what the “foghorn sound” is but you may have heard it in the movie trailer for the film. If you have seen Inception and are curious as to what the sound might mean to the film, you’re gonna wanna check out the video clip that is hiding after the jump

The inclusion of the Edith Piaf song was already kind of a filmic meta-joke, since Marion Cotillard (who plays Mal) won an Oscar for playing Piaf in La Vie en Rose. The fact that the Evil Foghorn sound (which plays over the very beginning of the movie, and returns frequently) is actually a slowed-down version of the song could mean quite a few things. Most noticeably, since “Non, je ne regrette rien” is the song the Dream Team uses as their wake-up call, and since the lower dream-levels slow down time…well, this certainly adds a new layer to our burning questions about the ending.

There are so many layers to this film — both in the film itself and in the viewers point of view of the film as the watch the film — that it’s hard not to have your head explode as new information like this becomes available. I had a feeling the deep booming foghorn had more meaning than just being a very cool sound … but I had no idea it was actually the slowed down Edith Piaf song used in the film as the wake-up call. Is it possible that the entire movie is meant to be a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream? I mean, why not, right? Do any of y’all have any other Inception theories? Is there anything else that I might be missing?

I read somewhere that they think the whole movie is a commentary on movie making, that the whole crew just lives in fantasy. The buiness man is the producer, the architect is the set designer, the impersonator is the actor, Leo is the director, etc. I am going have to watch it again!

  2. Janelle says:

Both my boyfriend as well as my friend blew my mind and both said they believe the whole thing is a dream. That adds a whole new layer to the film (pun intended).

  3. Richard says:

seriously? this movie is way over hyped… like it wasn’t really good. it was honestly kinda boring, and stupid. people are dissecting this movie like its some masterpiece… and its not. but it’s whatever i guess..

Judging By your comment you obviously just couldnt understand its complexity and thats fine but dont bash on a film because you didnt understand it.

SPOILERS: Theory: Old man Saito used the gun to kill Dicaprio guy and that rocketted him into the dream of waking up on the plane.

When he went back the children were still wearing the exact same clothes he’d left them in.
Even if he DID escape limbo, managed to give himself a kick in layer 3 (ice world hospital), and layer 2 (gravityless hotel): he’s dead in level 1. In level 1 he’s trapped in the van under the water which is fine because in a dream you don’t die, you just get sent back to oblivion. So as soon as he got to level 1 hed die and go back to oblivion. The end had to be a dream.

@Richard I don’t think people are acting like it is a masterpiece. It got people to think and it is one of the only movies (with a wide release) that was an original idea…not from a TV show, book, or a re-make. People enjoy thrillers.

  6. Krissy says:

I think the American audience has been underestimated for a long time, and finally people have a movie that makes them think a little bit more, and they like it. At the very least, this will inspire other film makers to be a bit more ambitious in their story telling, and will encourage producers to take more risks on challenging plots. Even if you didn’t like this movie, it is a win for entertainment in the US.

As if the ending of the movie wasn’t thought provoking enough!? Now the noises are added to the mix? Haha. I was prettysure they just used the noise to get the viewers heart racing! It worked on me, I mean my heart beat in rhythm with the bass… the entire time!

…wasn’t the same technique used in Shutter Island to make it scarier?

  8. M says:

Also, the kids are exactly the same age when he “goes home” hasn’t he been on the run for years ? He is definitely still dreaming

  9. taikwan says:

But the totem – it was Mal’s not his so it it even legit whether it falls or not?

Great details by those responsible for that music:

Whoops! Wrong article THIS is the one that explains it all – beautifully :

Bah- all these comments are so good! This movie will always continue to blow my mind. I hope Nolan never comes out with what his true meaning was. :)

  13. Kim says:

The kids aren’t the same age (check the credits on IMDB). Also, the girl is wearing the same color dress, but the one at the end is a tunic and she’s wearing a white t-shirt underneath (which she isn’t in the earlier shots). She’s also noticably older (which I didn’t notice until the second time I saw the movie). The other major clue about the end is DiCaprio’s wedding ring. He’s only wearing it in his dreams, never in reality and he isn’t wearing it in the last scene of the movie, when he finally sees his kids.

  14. CJ says:

My guess is that his wife was right and that they were in a dream when she jumped off the building. It was possible that they were both in a dream within a dream during the period where they were laying on the train tracks and that act rocketed them back to the first dream… and that one he hadn’t woken up from yet. Any further dream took him that much farther. Also, how did he get Mal’s totem? It showed him going into her “safe” and retrieving it, but that was just a dream. How did he get it in reality?

Here is Inception’s Dileep Rao’s take on it:

  16. D. says:

Until I read or think of an alternative theory, I’m sticking with the belief that it’s all real and Cobb comes home to his kids. I also think that Cobb’s totem is his wedding ring and it can all be explained here: http://revolvingdoorproject.ne.....t-the-end/

  17. Japhygirl says:

Don’t forget that the top DID fall over earlier in the film, in the hotel room. This would mean either the top is meaningless or that level is in fact reality.

  18. Danielle says:

i believe he never woke up after taking that serum bc when he’s caught in the bathroom trying to spin his totem he never gets a chance to… it falls.

  19. d says:

@g in response to what you said to @richard.. inception is not original, nolan was inspired by a japanese anime film made over four years ago called PAPRIKA about a dream machine that is stolen by dream-terrorists etc etc, there’s even a scene or two pretty much duplicated in inception…
