Time is running out ... for good
‘24’ Ends Tonight

Now that we’ve borne witness to the last episode of the ABC series Lost we can turn our attention tonight to the last episode ever of the Fox series 24. That’s right, after 8 seasons of pulse-pounding excitement, time will finally run out on the 24 TV series:

The Atlantic boldly maintains that 24 is “the most influential TV drama of all time”, claiming the show has had a deeper impact on television than even The Sopranos, The Wire, Hill Street Blues, or ER. That is high praise (which I, for the most part) agree with. 24 really set a new standard in TV. It started out as a very novel idea … each episode of the 24 ep season would represent “in real time” one full day in the life of American superhero Jack Bauer. The show stayed true to that formula for all 8 seasons … and, much to my chagrin, altho the show may have run out of inventive ways to tell new and exciting stories it really provided more thrills than any TV show that I can think of. Jack Bauer saved the world from nuclear attack (among other incredible threats) on many occasions, never flinching when he was asked to do the impossible. I was able to preview tonight’s finale episode and I can assure you, the show goes out with a bang. I was very satisfied with the way 24 ends and I hope you will be too. Make sure you tune in to say goodbye to Jack Bauer, Chloe O’Brien and the folks at CTU. They’ve kept us entertained for the better part of a decade. It will be, IMHO, very sad to see them go.

The Beckham Bunch Play, Laugh

While David Beckham was off chillin’ with the British troops stationed in Afghanistan late last week, his wife and kids remained home in SoCal living their happy lives together. Last week, we got to meet the Beckham‘s pet pooch Coco (with the pink toenails) and right now we get to see her enjoying a playdate with the youngest Beckham boys Romeo James and Cruz David:

Lest you think it was just Romeo and Cruz having a gand ol’ time this weekend, check out these photos that show a very happy eldest Beckham boy Brooklyn Joseph and a … well … kinda miserable-looking but still probably happy mama Victoria Beckham mugging for the photogs:

Yes, life looks real good for the Beckhams. They really make an adorable family, don’t you think?

Matthew McConaughey Kicks Off A New Surf Season

In years past, we’ve spent some time admiring photos of once single playboy Matthew McConaughey hittin’ the surf here in SoCal in various states of undress. Since becoming a father and somewhat settling down with babymama Camila Alves, Matthew has ditched his playboy image and behavior … but he has remained a active surfer. This weekend, he and young son Levi Alves did a bit of surfing (not together) to unofficially kick off the 2010 Summer Surf Season:

Sure, these photos might be a tad bit hotter if Matthew were wearing less (I mean, it’s like pulling teeth to get him to go shirtless when it wasn’t that long ago that you couldn’t pay the man to wear a shirt in public) but I love seeing photos of him at the beach with his children. it really is very cool to see that Matthew has grown up considerably in the past few years. I know this won’t be the last photo we’ll see of the McConaughey men at the beach … in no time at all, father and son will be riding the waves together. I am very much looking forward to seeing those photos one day.

The good son
Dina & Ali Lohan Attend Michael Lohan, Jr’s College Graduation

Earlier today we watched video of an impromptu interview that Lindsay Lohan posted online ahead of her court appearance which took place a few hours ago here in SoCal and in that video Lindsay revealed that she missed attending her brother Michael Lohan‘s college graduation because she had to prepare for court (tho, had she stayed in SoCal and showed up in court last week as she was instructed, she would’ve been free to attend said graduation) … but we now know that mama Dina Lohan and little sister Aliana Ali Lohan were in attendance at yesterday’s ceremony. Here is a photo of mother and daughter that was posted on Twitter that show them at the Ithaca College graduation in New York yesterday morning. And, altho Lindsay couldn’t attend, she did send her personal congrats to her brother also on Twitter:

congratulations to my brother graduating top of his class! he’s so brilliant & im SO proud of him!! yay Mikey! @dinamlohan raised us well!

Yes, congratulations are absolutely in order … at least one Lohan kid appears to have his head on straight. I sincerely hope that Lindsay is able to follow her brother’s example and straighten out her life … seriously. Graduating from college is no small feat. To be honest, I’d say that Michael Lohan, Jr. has just become the most successful, most accomplish Lohan kid. Here’s hoping his influence spreads to the other Lohan kids.

"The first place I came to was L.A., and I just loved it."
M.I.A. Does ‘Complex’ Magazine

M.I.A., who is planning to release her third album /\/\/\Y/\ in July, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Complex magazine. In her coverstory interview, M.I.A. (née Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam) talks about her young son Ikhyd, the end of the world, her preference of LA over NYC and more! Here is M.I.A.‘s beautiful Complex magazine coverphoto and some excerpts from her interview:

As a mom, do you hope for struggles for your son in his lifetime?
M.I.A.: I don’t hope for them, but he’s probably going to have them. I think their generation is probably going to have the craziest, you know?

In what respect?
M.I.A.: Any kid being born in these times is gonna have to be resilient to a million and one things. We thought we’d seen it all, and our parents thought that they’d seen it, but every generation it gets more and more intense.

Did you see much violence growing up?
M.I.A.: Yeah, all the time. My kid’s gonna see it, but he’s gonna see it in computer games. I don’t know which is worse. The fact that I saw it in my life has maybe given me lots of issues, but there’s a whole generation of American kids seeing violence on their computer screens and then getting shipped off to Afghanistan.

What was your impression of America when you were little?
M.I.A.: The first place I came to was L.A., and I just loved it. From the airplane looking out the window, the landscape just shines—all the lights are twinkling, all the cars are reflecting the sun. It was very Tinseltown. If you’re coming from Sri Lanka and you want to experience the West, that was the extreme end of Western civilization to me—the vastness of L.A. was truly different. I wasn’t impressed with New York, ’cause it’s a bigger version of London. But L.A. was kinda cool.

Has your idea of America changed as you’ve grown up?
M.I.A.: When I first came in the mid-’90s, I was listening to loads of hip-hop, and the gangsta-rap era completely engulfed me. There’s where I spent my time. Those were the clubs I went to, and those were the people I was hanging out with, so I had a weird understanding of it. But now I get to see a bigger picture of America. It’s different.

What’s changed?
M.I.A.: The thing that I enjoyed about it when I came to L.A. was that it was just people doing whatever they liked. It was your life and you could do things and you were in charge. There were barbecues all the time in every park, house parties. Just so much more joy. And now it doesn’t seem like that. And it’s because it’s so expensive there. By the time you’ve got to doing your house, insurance, your car, and paid a bill for your baby, it’s just too hard for you to have any fun, you know?

Do you have a process, or do you create when you feel like it?
M.I.A.: I’m really into some sort of digital ruckus and that’s kind of what it is in the sound and imagery. I don’t wanna say it’s chaotic, but if we’re being given certain tools, it’s rediscovering and reassembling, I suppose. The bottom line is: Sometimes my work is really uncomfortable and doesn’t sit well, but that’s the point. It’s OK to push it out this far—someone’s gonna be like, “But I like it over here.” But at least the door’s open and you’ve pushed it that far, so the possibility of a range can exist.

Are you conscious of trying to make art to live up to your reputation, or do you start clean every time?
M.I.A.: It really depends on what you’re going through at the time. The last album I was making was really chaotic. I was traveling all the time and was just mad, angry, pissed off. I threw the hard drive out the window with “Paper Planes” on it and was like, “Fuck this song.” Luckily, it didn’t smash. But the world has changed since I worked on the last album. I started with writing an intro for it, the intro was, “Connected to the Google/connected to the government.” That was like 10 months ago, and every day I felt more and more like I was tuned into whatever was going on.

What was it that was going on?
M.I.A.: Google is the most powerful corporation in the world, and why do you think that is? It’s ’cause they log the most data and they collect the most information and that’s the thing that everyone’s gonna want and that’s the thing that no one’s gonna have. That’s what it’s about and it’s important to tell people in the street or poor people to arm themselves with knowledge ’cause that shit’s a commodity.

I just love her. She speaks her mind openly and honestly and whether or not you agree with her opinions, you’ve got to give her credit for so openly sticking to her guns. She’s a genius, both musically and otherwise. I can’t wait to hear her entire new album. After the jump, check out a few photos from M.I.A.‘s Complex magazine photospread — the photos are really striking …

The TV Guide
Downtown Motown

Yesterday was my last day in Detroit before returning home to SoCal last night and I got to spend the early part of the day with Mark and Sarah and the latter part of the day with my parents. Sarah, Mark and I ventured into downtown Detroit to have lunch at Slow’s BBQ and to drive around the city. It’s so sad to see the dilapidated parts of the city but I am happy that the Detroit Train Station is still standing:

I understand the city of Detroit is planning to demolish it, which would be such a shame considering how beautiful a building it still is … even in it’s near condemned state. As sad a sight as it is, I was happy to see it still standing.

After our quick trip downtown, I said my goodbyes to Mark and Sarah and went home to hang out with my folks. Even in their early 80′s, they are healthy, active and vibrant. I am so lucky to have them … we had a nice afternoon together.

My flight home wasn’t too bad and it was really great to be back home with David. We’ve got a few things going on this week but I’m looking forward to a whole lotta nothing tonight. Hope your Mondays are going well :)

Stones aren't splitting, Hayes to host Tonys, Paula gets a new TV show
Blink and you missed it

Last night, during the 2 1/2 hour series finale of Lost on ABC, a quick promo trailer for True Blood aired that provided a digital barcode that could be captured on your smartphone and would let you watch an exclusive scene from the first ep of the new season of TB which will premiere on HBO on Sunday June 13. For those of you who missed watching the clip last night for whatever reason, you can check it out in full right here:

I understand the clip can only be watched on a smartphone so those of you who do not have smartphones can finally watch the clip above. It’s not a terribly exciting clip but the fact that vampire Eric (played by Alexander Skarsgård) is shirtless works for me :) I suspect we still have a few more goodies to look forward to in the next 3 weeks leading up to the season 3 premiere of True Blood. More shirtlessness, please ;D

Lance Bass Brunches With His Boys

Lance Bass and a group of his BFFs were spotted at an eatery called Extra Virgin in Greenwich Village, NYC over the weekend lookin’ like they were having a gay ol’ time (ie. the happy gay, that is) … here are a few photos of Lance and his boys brunching over the weekend:

Unfortch, Lance‘s rumored new beau Kyan Douglas (of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fame) was not in attendance at this weekend’s fun all-boy brunch. The couple have yet to be photographed together so … I guess we’ll just have to keep an eye out to see if Lance and Kyan manage to stay together long enough to be seen out and about as a couple.

Judge tells L. Lo to SCRAM
Lindsay Lohan Appears In Court, Gets A Slap On The Wrist

Troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan finally made her much-ballyhooed appearance in court today to stand before judge Marsha Revel who is overseeing her ongoing DUI probation case stemming from her DUI conviction a few years ago. Earlier today we heard from Lindsay herself in her own words her reasons for missing court last week, but just moments ago Judge Revel got to hear those “reasons” in court. The judge put new restrictions on L. Lo, including the requirement that she wear a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring bracelet, and set another court date for July. Here are a few photos of Lindsay in court with her attorney Shawn Chapman Holley and the deets of what went down:

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge outlined new bail conditions for Lindsay Lohan at a hearing Monday, including a bracelet to detect alcohol, a ban on drinking and random weekly drug testing. Lohan must also attend all of her alcohol classes as scheduled, unless the class interferes with her random drug tests, Judge Marsha Revel said. Lohan’s attorney said she is filming scenes for a movie in Texas, but Revel insisted, “It’s going to be drug testing here,” meaning in California. Lohan’s attorney, after conferring with her client, said she would accept the conditions. Prosecutor Danette Meyers asked for proof that Lohan had a ticket to fly back to the United States in time for last week’s hearing. Defense attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said she has the proof and will show it to the court. A formal probation violation hearing for Lohan was scheduled for July 6. Holley told Revel that Lohan missed her alcohol counseling session last week because her uncle died. “Did she go to the funeral?” Revel asked. “She did not,” Holley answered. Revel has given Lohan, 23, several second chances, but she appeared ready to lay down the law when Lohan missed Thursday’s hearing on her probation for a 2007 drunken driving conviction. Holley told the judge that Lohan was unable to catch a flight from France two days earlier because she lost her passport at the Cannes Film Festival. Thursday’s hearing was to determine whether Lohan had been attending weekly alcohol counseling sessions as ordered, but her absence prompted Revel to rule there that was “probable cause to believe [Lohan]) is in violation of probation.” The judge revoked Lohan’s probation, issued an arrest warrant and imposed new conditions. “I warned her before,” Revel said. “She knew it was very serious.” Lohan was not arrested when she finally arrived in Los Angeles from France on Saturday because her $100,000 bond had already been posted … Lohan was arrested twice in 2007 on charges of driving under the influence and in the second incident she was also charged with cocaine possession. The first arrest came after Lohan lost control of her Mercedes-Benz convertible and struck a curb in Beverly Hills. Just two weeks after checking out of a Malibu drug and alcohol rehab facility, she was arrested again in July 2007 after a woman called Santa Monica police, saying Lohan was trying to run her down with a car.

I mean, yeah, we knew that Lindsay wasn’t going to be thrown in jail and it was very unlikely that she’d be forced into rehab … these new restrictions were to be expected. At least, tho, this gives Lindsay a chance to straighten herself out (at least for a short while) in order to show the court she can comply with these restrictions. It remains to be seen if Lindsay will actually fully comply (ie. NO booze at all) and, if not, how Judge Revel will react … but she does have a chance to do the right thing. Will she be able to do so? I suppose it’s anyone’s guess.
