Ryan Tedder, I think this song is for you

Remember that bit of controversy last Summer when Kelly Clarkson got pissed that her song Already Gone, written by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, sounded an awful lot like Beyoncé‘s hit single Halo which was, coincidentally, also written by Ryan Tedder? As you may recall, Kelly was very vocal about how she believed that Tedder intentionally gave her essentially the same song that he had already given to Beyoncé … but with new lyrics. Well, it would seem that Kelly is still pissed off because a diss track titled Wash, Rinse, Repeat as leaked its way to the Internets and it seems to address the Tedder controversy in the lyrics:

Despite the fact that she has sounded off her outrage following the leak of her songs earlier last month, another never-before-heard material from Kelly Clarkson hits the web again. Titled “Wash, Rinse, Repeat”, the track reportedly carries lyrics which lash out at Ryan Tedder and her record label. The winner of “American Idol” season 1 is rumored to slam the frontman of OneRepublic for writing her a song called “Already Gone” which coincidentally sounds similar to another Ryan-penned track, Beyonce Knowles’ “Halo”. She sings, “Music from the past, from the present, well just last week / We will change a note and get away with it (wait and see) / Just when you think we’ve changed like an addict we sweep back in with a dose of reality.” In other lines, Kelly reportedly takes aim at her label’s bosses who at that time released the single without her consent. “I’ll be playin’ God and you can be my bitch / The only compromise is you get to pick which of these formula’s is your perfect fit .. Wash, rinse, repeat, why are you fighting it? / No, no no, don’t get crazy keep between those lines / Here’s what we have in mind, we’ve worked with everyone trust us and see / Wash, rinse and repeat,” so the lyrics read. Back in July 2009, Kelly Clarkson revealed her frustration after learning that her “Already Gone” has “similar elements” that Ryan Tedder used in Beyonce Knowles’ single. “No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’,” she said back then. “In the end, they’re releasing it without my consent. It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over.”

As I said last July when I blogged about this controversy when it happened, I totally hear the similarity between the two songs and I am totally on Team Kelly. I LOVE that she took her frustration out in song … it’s just a shame that this diss track won’t get the attention it truly deserves. Kelly is amazing. She is so crazy talented, I just love her. This song rules … I love it entirely. I don’t think it’s going to win her favor from her record company bosses (and I imagine Ryan Tedder ain’t gonna be a fan of this track) but KC is sticking to her guns and I can’t help but respect her for it. You go, Kelly!!

Live from New York
Christina Aguilera Does ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’

Christina Aguilera was the special guest on today’s live episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show which taped at the famed Radio City Music Hall in NYC, NY … and here are a few photos and a quick run-down of her appearance on the show:

The 29-year-old took centre stage during a special live broadcast of Oprah at Radio City Music Hall in celebration of O Magazine’s 10th anniversary. And in her knee-high stiletto boots, fishnet stockings and leotard the Dirrty singer certainly won over the audience … She recently revealed how she juggles her roles as a mother and a sex symbol, saying: ‘Mama still has to be me. ‘I never claimed to be a cookie-cutter soccer mom. That’s all good for some people. Not for me. [Max is] going to learn to respect the fact that women are allowed to express themselves and not feel shameful about their bodies or their sexuality.’ She also told Access Hollywood that her son’s two favourite singers are Rihanna and, of course, his mother. Christina admitted: ‘He’s really into Rihanna. And he does say, ‘Put in mama’s song, put in mama’s song.’ And then he goes – ‘Go cazy! Go cazy!’ It’s so cute.’

Xtina is back, y’all. Her appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show is the first of many promo appearances on her schedule in the weeks leading up to the release of her new album Bionic this Summer. I know today’s episode of Oprah has already aired on the East coast but folks on the West coast can still look forward to seeing Xtina‘s appearance on the show … I understand it’s a must see for Xtina fans.

Back on his own two feet
David Beckham Is Healing Nicely

Great news, Becks fans!! David Beckham seems to be WELL on the road to recovery as he was spotted out and about this week lookin’ back to his good ol’ self. Becks was spotted doing a bit of clothes shopping for his kids in Santa Monica, CA this week and then was spotted courtside at the LA Lakers game at the Staples Center the same night … in both instances, he was walking around on his own two feet without the need of a brace or a crutch:

I’m sure Becks still has a long way to go before he’s fully recovered and able to get back on the soccer field but this is a great sign. He wasn’t expected to be walking again so soon. This is a very hopeful sign that his soccer career isn’t over just yet. Glad to see you walking around, Becks, but take it easy … will ya? We want you back but we want you fully healed first :)

The TV Guide
Truly Outrageous!

For some strange reason — which I cannot pinpoint — I was suddenly struck by the deep desire to re-watch episodes of the 80′s cartoon series Jem and the Holograms. I suppose this isn’t to much of a shock, considering that I’ve been watched old eps of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lately but that is a “boy” show and Jem is a “girl” show. Even back in the 80′s, when Jem was on the air, I had no qualms at all about watching the show on a daily basis even if it was considered a “girl” show. To me, Jem was an animated version of MTV … and I couldn’t get enough:

I should clarify that I never had an interest in owning any of the dolls (not that there’s anything wrong with boys playing with dolls, considering I had a She-Ra doll among my vast collection of various action figure “boys” toys), for me it was about the music. I know, it sounds a bit lame but the music and music videos in the cartoon were the real draw for me. I had an uncanny ability to convince my female friends to give me the cassette tapes of Jem/Misfits songs that were packaged with the dolls. I LOVED those cassettes. The Jem tapes were white with pink stickers and the Misfits tapes were black with green writing. What you may not understand if you didn’t experience this phenomenon in the 80′s was that MTV and music videos were THE biggest thing. In the days before the vastness of the Internet, all we had to focus all of our free time on was MTVJem really zeroed in on that for kids. It’s no wonder I’m such a sucker for sugary pop music … it’s all Jem‘s fault.

IN ANY EVENT, yeah … I’m kinda into wanting to revisit all of that again so … please don’t shoot me.

Tonight, I’m meeting up with Darion for a quick bite to eat and then it’s early to bed so I can early rise tomorrow and work before we fly off to NYC for a week. I hope the weather is fab in the Big Apple right now cuz I am loving the sun here in SoCal. Happy Weekend, y’all!

"'Blackout' may be the most influential pop album of the past five years."
‘Rolling Stone’ Magazine Heaps Great Praise On ‘Blackout’ By Britney Spears

Earlier this week, much ado was made over the Internet leak of a Britney Spears recorded demo of the song Telephone (which was originally written for her but ultimately passed on to Lady Gaga) … ado that is still making headlines today. Rolling Stone magazine published an article online that not only praises Britney‘s demo version of Telephone over Gaga‘s mastered version of the song but goes on to hail Britney‘s album Blackout as “the most influential pop album of the past five years”. I have to say, I kinda agree … read on:

Ever since Britney Spears’ demo version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” leaked this week, fans have been buzzing. Producer Rodney Jerkins quickly confirmed that it really was Britney singing, but any seasoned Britneyologist could already identify it by ear within a couple of bars — nobody else pronounces the consonant “r” or the long vowel “e” like our girl. It has all the distinctive vocal tics of Britney, or at least the laptop that does her singing. At this point, I’ve come to love Britney’s demo even more than Gaga’s already-brilliant hit version. Even though it’s a more bare-bones production, it amps up all the seething rage in the song, stripping it down to the killer combo of a plucked harp and a jaded party girl strung out on Auto-Tune and paranoia. “Telephone” actually sounds a lot like Britney’s 2007 hit “Piece of Me,” proving yet again how much impact Britney has had on the sonics of current pop. People love to make fun of Britney, and why not, but if “Telephone” proves anything, it’s that Blackout may be the most influential pop album of the past five years. The demo is lighter than Gaga’s production, cutting out all the rock bombast, but that just makes the song more linear and urgent. It reduces “Telephone” to a drum machine, that harp, a magic box of vocal effects, and the concept that a girl’s soul and a magic box of vocal effects can sometimes be the exact same thing. Britney uses Auto-Tune the way Bob Dylan used his harmonica — for punctuation, for atmosphere, for an alienatingly weird sound effect. It’s a blast of vocal distortion, harsh on the surface, but expressive, capable of sounding wildly funny or abrasively pissed-off or seductive. In “Telephone,” as in “Piece of Me,” the Auto-Tune does for her voice what the harmonica does for Dylan’s in “It Ain’t Me, Babe” — a way of telling the world to keep its hands off you. Britney is talking to her phone, talking to the boy who keeps calling, talking herself out of compulsively checking her phone. The way her voice fades in and out of Auto-Tune — mostly in — is totally brilliant. Like Bob Dylan (and I swear this is the last time I’ll mention his name right now, despite the millions of things he and Brit have in common) Britney loves to cross-fade between a human voice (hey world, take a look at me, I’m a star, I’m somebody, pay attention) and a machine voice (hey world, fuck off, you can’t reach me, I don’t believe you, you’re a liar). The point isn’t whether Britney is punching the buttons herself. (When is that ever the point with a pop star?) It’s the romance going on between the voice and the machine. Part of what makes Britney the perfectest of perfect pop stars is the way she expresses her personality most passionately when she’s turning herself into a machine — surrendering to the beat, disappearing into the thrill of the pop moment, singing like a robot. That’s what makes her sound so human after all. In “Telephone,” she doesn’t want to think any more, talk any more, feel any more — she just wants to hit the floor and dance to the rhythm machines until she turns into a machine herself.

Truth be told, not even I would make a Britney Spears comparison with Bob Dylan but I can’t say that the argument isn’t at least a valid one. But Rob Sheffield, the author of this piece for Rolling Stone, isn’t finished with his argument that Britney‘s Telephone is a sonic masterpiece. He goes on to make the claim that Britney‘s version even echoes punk music of the early 80′s. Trust me, you’ve got to read the rest after the jump …

Jared & Shannon Leto Make Cute Mouseketeers

Pink reader Kammie passed along a few adorable photos of the Leto brothers when they were just wee little dudes. Because everyone loves to see pics of celebs when they were cute lil’ young’ns, I thought it would be fun to share. Here is a supercute photo of Jared and Shannon rockin’ their Mickey Mouse ears back in the day:

OMG … cute, right? Well, there’s more cuteness to see. After the jump, check out two more photos of the Leto Bros. set in other fantastic 70′s picturesque scenes …

Yum!
Jake Gyllenhaal Promotes His New Film In London

With only a few weeks left until his new film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opens in theaters, Jake Gyllenhaal is hard at work on the promo trail in Europe. Our dear Jakey poo was spotted making his exit from the Claridges Hotel in London earlier today on his way to the Dorchester Hotel for press interviews. Jake was lookin’ F-I-N-E in his snazzy light blue suit … behold:

It totally sucks that I am not as excited as I’d like to be for the release of Prince of Persia. I have a sneaking suspicion in my gut that the movie is going to be a laughable mess. Even still, I cannot deny that the fact that Jake is starring in the flick has everything to do with my intent to see the movie as soon as I can. How can you not want to see a film with a cutie like Jakey here in the lead role? And, who knows … mebbe the movie will turn out to be better than anticipated? It could be the biggest Summer blockbuster of all time! Well … it could. Right? Anyone?
