First Look: Hank Azaria As Gargamel In ‘The Smurfs’

Back in February we got our first look at what the CGI animated Smurfs will look like in the big screen adaptation of The Smurfs and in March we learned that Neil Patrick Harris will be starring in the film as the lead, live-action character. Today we not only learn that Simpsons star Hank Azaria has been cast as the villain Gargamel but we also get our first look at what he will look like in the film!

Director Raja Gosnell is currently shooting Sony Pictures’ The Smurfs in New York City and Hank Azaria was spotted today in character as Gargamel … In the 3D August 3, 2011 release, the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village and they tumble from their magical world into ours – in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down. The cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Anton Yelchin, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Paul Reubens, John Oliver, Kenan Thompson, B.J. Novak, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck and Gary Basaraba.

I’m still not sold on this idea to bring The Smurfs into the world of CGI but I am impressed with Azaria‘s portrayal of Gargamel. I mean, he looks EXACTLY like Gargamel in the flesh. Check out the photos after the jump …

Getting To Know iPad

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent part of my Friday eagerly awaiting the delivery of my new Apple iPad 3G … and once it arrived, I spent the rest of my day getting to know my shiny new toy. There is a bit of a learning curve with the iPad, I’ve determined, in that you can’t just plug it in and it becomes a larger iPhone. There are a many differences between the iPad and the iPhone and I now know it will take me a bit of time to get used to working on my iPad:

I definitely plan on doing a more substantive review of the iPad after I spend a bit of time with it. I will say that typing on the iPad is light years better than typing on the iPhone (and going back to the smaller device after playing with the larger device was a bit jarring). But, again, I’ll need to spend a bit more time playing with the iPad to have a better sense of the pros and cons of the device.

David and I met up with our good friend Gillian for dinner last night and we spent a lot of time catching up with one another … spent even more time going thru a couple bottles of wine ;) As always, we had a fantastic time with Gillian … so much so that we’re meeting her for brunch this afternoon.

I need to get my ass out to see A Nightmare on Elm Street at some point … hopefully today … but the weather is so beautiful, I kinda want to be outside, too! It’s May Day, y’all! Happy Beltaine and Happy Weekend!!

Michael C. Hall Finds His ‘Bliss’ In NYC

Last week we got our first look at Michael C. Hall back to work on the NYC set of his new film East Fifth Bliss and today we get to see a few more photos from the set, where MCH was joined by fellow castmates Brad William Henke and Lucy Liu:

As you may recall, East Fifth Bliss is a comedy film so we’ll be seeing a bit of a different side from Michael C. Hall. I cannot get over how great he looks in these photos. That smile, it’s all about that charming smile. Hall‘s wife and Dexter co-star Jennifer Carpenter has already informed us that he is now cancer-free but photos like this really drive the point home. I’m just so happy that MCH is lookin’ so well. Wee!!

Rihanna Does A Bit Of Sexy Shopping In Paris

Yesterday we saw a few lovely photos of Rihanna on the French set of her new music video Te Amo and today we get to see a few more photos of Rihanna in France. After a long, hectic day of filming, it appears that Ri Ri was in the mood to do a bit of shopping … so she made her way to an adult store called Toy’s Me to pick up a few essentials:

Keeping secrets must be near impossible if you are a globally-known and loved popstar – for a start paparazzi follow you everywhere. So when Rihanna decided to visit a sex shop in Paris this week after shooting her latest video, the world’s media – not to mention her fans – went with her. The 22-year-old spent time with the crowd outside the store in the French capital city, posing for pictures with them and chatting. She then went into the store with her entourage, perhaps searching for inspiration for her next raunchy video. Crowds waited outside for her to emerge as she browsed in the shop, lit up in bright pink.
The Umbrella star is known for her racy ensembles and dance moves and fans are no doubt highly anticipating her next release, ‘Te amo’.

It’s not totally clear what purchases (if any) Rihanna made at this adult toy shop but I can imagine that she wasn’t there merely to browse. Perhaps she was in the market for a new outfit, maybe she was looking for some bondage gear … maybe she was lookin’ for a toy to help her pass the long, lonely nights on tour? Whatever the case may be, it’s fairly evident that Rihanna wasn’t at all shy about making her purchases. Good girl gone bad, indeed.

The End
The Cast Of ‘24’ Convenes For A Lavish Series Wrap Party

24 castmembers, both current and old skool, made their way to Boulevard 3 here in LA last night to attend a series wrap party held in honor of the Fox TV series. As you may recall, the final episode of the series was filmed in NYC at the start of this month but they saved the party for last night. Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub were joined by 24 alums like Dennis Haybert, Kim Raver and Sarah Clarke at last night’s fete. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night:

I LOVE that so many 24 alums came back for one last hurrah last night. 24 has given us years of entertainment and I love that so many of the people responsible for all that entertainment got together one last time to celebrate. It’s kinda crazy to think that the show is over … but I am very much looking forward to 24 finding new life on the big screen. Don’t these people all look amazing? It’s really very cool to see them all together again.

No Longer Legally Prohibited From Appearing On Television
Conan O’Brien Opens Up On ‘60 Minutes’

Conan O’Brien will appear on tomorrow night’s episode of 60 Minutes on CBS in an interview where he is finally able to talk publicly on TV about the way NBC treated him when they fired him from hosting The Tonight Show. Because of legal restrictions from NBC, O’Brien was not allowed to appear on TV at all until after May 1. CBS jumped at the chance to score the first interview with O’Brien for air on the first day legally possible. In this candid interview, Conan opens up about how his firing has affected him and he honestly expresses his feelings towards both NBC and Jay Leno (who happily took back The Tonight Show after his own TV show failed miserably). Here are a few excerpts from Conan‘s interview with 60 Minutes:

In his first interview since walking away from NBC’s “Tonight Show,” a funny but pointed Conan O’Brien tells “60 Minutes” on Sunday night that he believes that he was not given a fair chance to prove that he could succeed and that money may have been the reason NBC decided to bring Jay Leno back to late-night television. The CBS correspondent Steve Kroft spent most of a day at Mr. O’Brien’s home in Los Angeles exploring the turbulent — and, for Mr. O’Brien, traumatic — events that led up to his exit in January from the network he had worked for during his entire 17-year career as a television performer. Mr. O’Brien’s wife, Liza, is also interviewed in a segment that Mr. Kroft said was likely to run several minutes beyond the usual 12-minute limit for its reports. “We just got so much from Conan,” Mr. Kroft said in a telephone interview. He added that the report, which will also include highlights from Mr. O’Brien’s current live tour, contains some “lighthearted moments,” though Mr. O’Brien speaks directly about the sting of losing a show that he had dreamed of hosting. Mr. O’Brien granted the interview under the provision that it could not be broadcast until after May 1, because in his departure agreement with NBC he was prohibited from appearing on television or any other form of media until after that date. In the interview Mr. Kroft presses Mr. O’Brien about his view of Mr. Leno’s move to return to late-night television, and Mr. O’Brien implicitly criticizes his former NBC colleague for reversing his previous position that he was giving up “The Tonight Show.” “If I had surrendered ‘The Tonight Show’ and handed it over to somebody publicly and wished them well,” Mr. O’Brien says, referring to Mr. Leno’s on-the-air hand-off to Mr. O’Brien last May, “and then, six months later …” Mr. O’Brien adds, referring to Mr. Leno’s willingness to return to the series. “But that’s me, you know,” Mr. O’Brien says. “Everyone’s got their own, you know, way of doing things.” At times Mr. O’Brien seems to hold back, acknowledging that he signed an agreement that he not disparage either Mr. Leno or network executives. When asked if he believed that Mr. Leno might have lobbied to regain the show, Mr. O’Brien says simply, “I don’t know,” but adds: “We’re all adults. We don’t take orders from the government.” More tellingly, he says of Mr. Leno’s decision to come back to the show: “He went and took that show back, and I think, in a similar situation, if roles had been reversed, I know — I know me, I wouldn’t have done that.” Later in the interview, Mr. O’Brien notes, “I sleep well at night.” When Mr. Kroft suggests that he got a raw deal, Mr. O’Brien says: “No, I didn’t. I’m fine. It just didn’t work out.” But when Mr. Kroft points out that Mr. Leno has said that they both got a raw deal through NBC’s maneuverings, Mr. O’Brien questions that and notes that Mr. Leno wound up back on “The Tonight Show” … When Mr. Kroft asks if he believes that Mr. Leno did something less than honorable, Mr. O’Brien hesitates and then says, “I can’t answer that.” That nonanswer seems to be rooted in the nondisparagement agreement, as Mr. Kroft notes. Jokingly, Mr. O’Brien says he has to be aware of that agreement and, indeed, “I have one in my wallet.” Neither Mr. Leno nor the NBC chief executive, Jeff Zucker, has called him since the upheaval, Mr. O’Brien says. Not that he is surprised, he adds, because he would not expect them to sit around and “sing old Irish fight songs — I don’t think they know any.” But he does try to counter one point NBC has made since his departure: that his “Tonight Show” was in line to lose money. Not only does he not believe that, Mr. O’Brien states, but also, “It’s really not possible.”

As funny and sweet as Conan O’Brien is, it’s clear that this interview is his chance to finally open up and be honest about how the shitty treatment he got from NBC and Jay Leno really made him feel. It’s insane to me that Conan cannot legally disparage the people who treated him so unfairly, so terribly. But, then again, Conan O’Brien is a very classy man and he would prolly refrain from stooping to the level of disparagement even if he wasn’t legally constrained. This is one interview I can’t wait to see. After the jump, check out a preview video clip of Conan on 60 Minutes for a taste of what’s in store in tomorrow’s televised interview …

The Dark Night Returns July, 2012
The Next ‘Batman’ Film Will Be Released In 2012

On the eve of the release of Iron Man 2 (opening next week), which will signal the release of a whole slew of new Marvel comic superhero films (ie. Thor, Captain America, The Avengers), Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan have announced the release date for the upcoming sequel film for DC Comics superhero Batman. Altho the film has not yet been titled, not yet been cast and very probably has not yet been completely written, we can look to July 20, 2012 as the day it will be released in theaters:

Chris Nolan is staying on a biannual schedule. With the director’s “The Dark Knight” breaking box-office records in 2008 and “Inception” poised to become a phenomenon this summer, fans will wait exactly two more years before seeing his next effort on the screen. Warner Bros. confirmed today that “Batman 3″ (not its final title, obviously) will come out in the summer of 2012, on July 20. In addition to making fanboys the world over salivate with eager anticipation, that also sets up a box-office rematch of sorts between Nolan’s Batman franchise, a DC creation, and the movies from Marvel’s stable of characters, as “The Avengers,” the supergroup of superhero Marvel movies, comes out a few months earlier (in May). When the first round of that slugfest went down, in the summer of 2008, “The Dark Knight” trumped “Iron Man” handily, grossing $215 million more in the U.S. But “Iron Man” wasn’t yet a cultural juggernaut back then. In 2012 the landscape could look a little different, as Marvel characters have continued to gain traction. “Avengers” will also have the benefit of Thor, Captain America and other characters from its film appearing in their own movies the summer before. And all this after “Iron Man 2″ looks to break the opening-weekend record of “The Dark Knight” next week. The high-tech weaponry, she is flying.

Batman: The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, was such a HUGE film that it’s hard to imagine a worthy follow-up. Heath Ledger‘s performance as the Joker was so amazing, it resulted in a posthumous Academy Award (a first for any superhero/comic book film) … that’s a tough act to follow. But, I’m certain that Nolan will do his very best to put out a worthy film. Altho the film is still 2 years away from release, I’m certain that the time will fly by relatively fast. Once we start hearing concrete info about the film (which villain/s will be featured, who will be cast, what it will be called) and then start seeing photos from the set, etc. it’ll be no time before the premieres start up and the film hits theaters. It’s hard not to get excited by this wee bit of news on the film. I truly cannot wait to hear more!
