Meet Thor’s Big Screen Adversary – The Destroyer
Heavy Metal

As you may recall, we learned in May of last year that actor Chris Hemsworth has been cast as the lead in the big screen adaptation of the comic book superhero Thor. Today we get our first taste of what’s in store for us when the film opens in May of next year. Now we all know that Iron Man 2 opens in theaters here in the US next week but some lucky folks have already been able to see the film in early screenings. Apparently, there is a bonus teaser scene for Thor that is shown at the very end of IM2 after the credits end … but the movie site Latino Review goes one step further and gives us our first peek at Thor‘s arch nemesis, The Destroyer, as he will be featured in next year’s film:

With “Iron Man 2″ being released overseas this week and in the U.S. next week, the question always remained whether or not there will be an ending credit scene and obviously there was. We saw the footage last night while everyone was at some Marvel/Paramount event for “Iron Man 2.” So while everyone was having a good time last night, I was working on something pretty cool for the upcoming “Thor” movie. Most of you folks know by now that (spoiler removed!) is shown at the end credits of “Iron Man 2.” Today I have for you a cool pic that our spy sent us. As per my source, THE DESTROYER is sent to earth by Loki to destroy Thor. It stands at about 9 feet tall. The Destroyer is an enchanted suit of armor forged by Odin, and when it first appeared it was hinted that the Destroyer had been created as a weapon to face some dark menace from the stars. The Destroyer is used by Thor’s arch-foe Loki on several occasions, and each time has actually come close to killing Thor. The film follows the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

While I am not the biggest fan of the Thor comic books, I am a huge fan of the superhero character himself. As a kid, I loved playing with my toy Thor hammer Mjǫllnir mainly because I loved beating it against the wall to drive my mother crazy (and I was super jealous of the little girl in Adventures in Babysitting who was lucky enough to have a kid-sized version of Thor‘s helmet). As an adult, I’m really looking forward to rekindling my childhood love of the character with this big screen adaptation. After the jump, if you dare, check out what Thor‘s arch enemy The Destroyer looks like in the photo from the film set made public by Latino Review

HMMM. I mean … I guess this could be cool. Tho, I’m pretty sure David and I got to see The Destroyer in person when we went to Medieval Times a couple of months ago. In any event, I’m certain the big screen version of Thor is gonna rule all! I’m even more anxious to see Iron Man 2 now that I know there’ll be a Thor teaser to see at the very end of the film. Any Thor fans out there? What do y’all think?

Big fan of Thor in Norse myth…so there are things in the comics that quite honestly drive me nuts (couldn’t comic Thor at least have the red hair?) Not sure how I feel about the Destroyer though. I don’t really have very high hopes for the film to be honest.

Not to get my nerd on too much here but why isn’t Thor up against Loki, The Enchantress, Mephisto, or Hela? There are quite a few villains that would be much better suited to battle someone as powerful as Thor. Maybe they will still play into the film somehow?

Thank you, Trent, for spelling the name of Thor’s hammer, Mjollnir. I had recently listened to a kid’s book on CD about Thor and Norse mythology and they said the name all the time but I had no idea I to spell it. (I still don’t know how to put the umlaut in…) For anyone who’s interested in Norse mythology or would like to get their young kids interested, “Thor’s Wedding Day” by Bruce Coville is great! It’s kind of an amalgam of Norse myths and the book on CD is great b/c it’s a full cast audio so there are lots of different people doing the parts. My whole family loved this book, from the 4 yr old to the 40 yr old!
