30 Seconds to Mars Film A Music Video For ‘This Is War’

Jared Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars bandmates recently filmed a new music video for the title track of their new album This is War and right here, right now we get to check out a few promo photos that were shot on location recently. Jared, Shannon Leto and Tomo Miličević will portray US military soldiers in the video … behold:

30 Seconds to Mars are the United States soldiers in the video shoot of their single “This Is War”. In three pictures taken during the filming, the band are seen donning army combat uniform and body armor. They have M4 rifles in their hands and ride an armored Humvee. In order to accurately capture the conflict in the war field, the band hire director Edouard Salier who has been in Iraq for several times. “The song is really about conflict, and the album ['This Is War'] really is about it too: the inevitability of conflict, the blessing of conflict and what we can all learn from it. We’ve certainly had our fair share of it,” frontman Jared Leto told MTV. “So for the ‘This Is War’ video, we wanted to explore another side of it. So we decided to portray soldiers in conflict.” “The video made us realize that underneath the uniforms, these men and women out there in conflict are just like you and I. When we put them on, I looked at my brother, looked at [guitarist] Tomo [Milicevic], and they looked like soldiers,” he continued. “You start to walk like a soldier, feel like a soldier, when you’re wearing body armor and carrying a working M4 … it’s an impactful experience. It was definitely provocative for us. It made us think, and that’s the point of the whole thing.”

Last November, we got to see the 30StM video for Kings + Queens and now the boys are on to video #2. Considering how elaborate the props are for this vid, I’m gonna guess this one might be a bit fancier … besides, you gotta love a man in uniform ;) I can’t wait to see how this video turns out.

‘Girl’ Power

Last night David and I made our way to the Landmark Theater in the Westside Pavilion to see the Swedish film adaption of the world-wide best selling novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’ve had this book on my reading list for MONTHS but haven’t yet found the time to read it … so when I discovered that the original Swedish adaptation, titled Män som hatar kvinnor, is playing in theaters now I had to rush out to see it. The reviews for the film have been exceptional so I had high hopes the film would be good … little did I know that the film would actually turn out to be spectacular:

Män som hatar kvinnor can be described as the Swedish Silence of the Lambs (in that creepy, graphic psychological drama/horror film sort of way). I understand the film version follows the book very closely and altho I have not read the book (yet), I found the film to be very good in every single way. The acting was superb, the direction was quite good and the story — OY! So good! I knew 20 mins. into the film that I was going to love it. I should warn that the film has a run time of 2 hours and 40 minutes which sounds daunting (especially for a foreign film with subtitles) but I promise, you don’t even realize how long the film is once you get engrossed in the story. I understand the 2 sequel novels have already been made into films in Sweden so I’m anxious to see those, too. I will be reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as well as the sequel books The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest (which make up the Millennium Trilogy of books written by Stieg Larsson) as soon as I can. I think I was most impressed by actress Noomi Rapace, the troubled computer hacker lead female, who was unbelievable in this film. I cannot endorse this film enough … it’s the best movie I’ve seen in AGES. Trust me on this, check out this film. It’s really fantastic. I’m curious to hear what others who have either seen the film or read the book think. I don’t personally know anyone who’s done either.

The beautiful weather is taking a vacy this weekend as I hear storms are on their way. Still, I plan to get out and enjoy as much sunshine as I can. I see a visit to Chick-Fil-A in my near future as well ;) Happy Saturday!!

Knox shares his toys with the world below
Angelina Jolie & Knox Léon Greet A Brand New Day

Here are a couple of really cute pics of Angelina Jolie and her baby boy Knox Léon on the balcony of their palazzo home in Venice, Italy this week saying hello to a bright new day as well as to the adoring world below. Knox brought out a toy bunny, which he likely found in his Easter basket this year, which he decided to share with others by tossing it off the balcony:

Awww … this is cute, y’all. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of seeing the Brangelina twins out and about … I’m so happy we are finally seeing them about as much as we get to see the other Brangelina kiddies. And about this discarded bunny … don’t be surprised if the dang thing ends up on eBay. I bet there’d be quite a few folks who’d love to own a toy that belonged to one of the Brangelina kids.

Like Mother Like Daughter
Nicole Richie Shares An Embarassing Photo From Her Past

Earlier this week, Nicole Richie shared on her official website an old picture from her personal photo collection that was snapped in 1989. The photo shows Nicole posing with her mother Brenda Harvey — in matching peach outfits I might add — and lookin’ all kinds of serious … behold:

In all honesty, as far as embarrassing photos go … this one ain’t bad at all. Nicole looks cute actually and even tho her mom looks like she was an extra on the prime time drama Dynasty, the over all mother-daughter portrait is really sweet. Yesterday we saw photos of Nicole with her own daughter, Harlow Winter, and the pair of them looked really cute together. I wonder if Harlow will look back on photos like those and consider them embarrassing as well. It’s funny how things tend to repeat themselves.

On behalf of PETA
Ryan Gosling Pens A Letter To McDonald’s

Last Wednesday we learned that Glee‘s Lea Michele was the latest celebrity spokesperson to team up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to join their crusade for animal rights. It turns out that actor Ryan Gosling has also decided to work with PETA in defense of animal rights and has fired off an open letter to the McDonald’s fast food chain regarding their treatment of the chickens they prepare as food:

Ryan Gosling is the heartthrob with a heart of gold—and now he’s got a message for the Golden Arches: Stop scalding chickens to death in defeathering tanks. The Oscar-nominated actor just fired off a letter on PETA’s behalf to McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner asking him to adopt a less cruel slaughter method. Controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK), which McDonald’s European suppliers already use, would eliminate the worst abuses currently faced by chickens who are killed for McNuggets. Ryan himself said it best in Half Nelson: “The only constant is change.” By changing to a more humane slaughter method, McDonald’s would evolve and show the world some compassion for animals. If you could say anything to McD’s, what would you tell them?

After the jump, read the full text of the letter supposedly written to McDonald’s by Ryan Gosling. While we are led to believe that Ryan actually wrote the text of the letter, it’s more likely that the letter was written and approved by him later. Wanna hear Gosling‘s beef with McD’s? Read on …
