Whitney Houston Silences Her Critics In Melbourne
Our dear Whitney thrills a bunch of Aussies

After Whitney Houston faced tough criticism on her first few concert dates in Australia and after Whitney beat a hasty exit out of Sydney, homegirl performed a show in Melbourne which has — surprisingly — resulted in a RAVE review! Despite what some critics have been alleging, Whitney Houston proved in Melbourne that she’s still got what it takes to thrill an audience full of concert-goers:

REPORTS of Whitney Houston’s career-death have been greatly exaggerated. Given some of the post-show comments – by journalists and the public – after Houston’s Brisbane and Sydney shows you half expect her to collapse on stage or not sing a note. On the contrary – her sold out Rod Laver Arena show was – for the majority – pure superstar material. Houston is just a more human superstar in 2010, now with added flaws that give her character. She hits all the right notes in I Look to You, the new song about what she calls ”down times.” Indeed every time she hits a huge note her devoted audience break into applause. I have rarely seen an audience so behind an artist, willing her on. Before that note in I Will Always Love You the audience give her a standing ovation, someone even yells ”You can do it” – and she does, 90 minutes into the concert. Those saying Houston should not be on tour are misguided – these are her people and they are thrilled to see her back on stage. And Houston knows she’s in her element. Perhaps all the haters (Houston referenced her bad Australian press) have spurred her on – there was no hint of trainwreck. Sure she’s eccentric – at times looking in her own world – but who wants normal stars? At one point Houston did her own make up on stage and occasionally giggled to herself. However there were no signs of excessive sweating, minimal holding onto towels and hardly any coughing. Houston belted out hits like The Greatest Love of All, All at Once and Step by Step with that spine-tingling voice in full effect. She chatted and engaged with the crowd, performed a Michael Jackson tribute and got well and truly in the vocal zone during her gospel segment. The only niggles were the talk-singing of I Wanna Dance With Somebody and How Will I Know at the end of the show, with the audience singalong and her amazing backing vocalists saving the day. But they’re minor gripes – if she keeps up this quality Houston we do not have a problem. Houston returns to Melbourne to play at the Plenary on Saturday.

Now this is more like it. While I fully believe that Whitney may not have sounded her best at some of her earlier shows, I never believed her performances were as tragic as her critics would like us to believe. A review like this is enough to wash away all the previous criticism … and if Whitney is using the “haters” to spurn her on, then I hope they keep the criticism coming. Whitney Houston is a survivor but, more importantly, she is a performer … and I LOVE that she is able to silence her critics in one fell swoop. Now, if she can just keep on going with that same fire, she will be just fine. She’ll be fine anyways … but I’m really looking forward to hearing more good things about Whitney‘s show … and I’m really looking forward to seeing her in person myself. You go, Whitney!! You keep on goin’!!

This is great to hear, but I’d like to see the videos to prove it LOL

  2. truthteller says:

I knew she could do it. She is a survivor and a fighter. Love her!

Whit’s ‘For the Lovers’ http://3.ly/46e performance on Sat at the Hope Winery in Australia. This is different from the review above which was today in Melbourne at Rod Laver stadium

anyhoo, she slayed- check out mamawhit dance moves- she sings the verses and sings over backing tracks for the chorus which is understandably as she’s doing alot of dancing.

Who knew, Whit could dance like that with!

Im so happy for Whitney!! I knew she could do it. They just caught her on some bad days during her first few Australian shows. Glad she can prove the haters wrong and get the press talking positive about her again. Cant wait till she comes the U.K.

I saw Whitney in concert a few times in the mid-late 80′s. Words can’t describe it.

I was at her concert in the Hunter Valley on Saturday night – i am a great fan and will be completely honest and say that it was “Whitney, her presence” that pulled the audience through, not the performance. Her fans love her no matter what… All the reviews i had heard i saw live on Saturday, the towel, out of breath 1/3 of songs and the coughing…. At the end of the day though, when she was on stage regardless of what was happening the crowd was going nuts. Would i pay $100 to go and see her again, probably not… Do i still love, yeah.

Aussies aren’t generally too hard to please – but we are spoiled for good music. We love our concerts, we love our day or weekend festivals, and we do attract a lot of big acts Down Under. I think that means when we pay $100 for a show, we simply, honestly, expect a good show. If long time fans were walking out of Brisbane and Sydney shows…I suspect there was a fair reason.

Big silver lining, if she’d been crap in Melbourne, nobody would’ve been too shy to say so. I’m really glad she managed to put on a performance worthy of her incredible talent and career.

There you go again promoting the fur loving Whitney… What is it with you and Whitney. I would be all behind her if it weren’t for her love of fur. But when she wrote Pete and said up yours. Now I need to say ‘up yours Whitney. And now I need to say ‘Why do you keep promoting Whitney, do you have a love affair with the crack head. Obviously, she’s a crack head. Get over promoting the loser who wears carcases.

one “good” show by a what it seems just a teeny tiny bit bias report on the show, please forgive me if I hold my breathe as to whether she still “has it”. I knew people who went to her brisbane show and confirmed it was shite and I have seen videos from the other shows and coupled with the same thing being said about her korean show etc I would have to say that if it continues and she has some excellent shows then her first few were just sickness or nerves or whatever but if the run doesnt last then it was just a glimmer. time will tell…oh btw saw celine dion: through the eyes of the world and that girl can sing!!

I was at the Melbourne show at Rod Laver. I have been waiting to see Whitney for 19 years. She did not dissapoint. She was stunningly beautiful and her voice was fantastic. When she sung i will always love you everyone was on theyre feet cheering her on.. We were all dancing along to how will i kno and i wanna dance with somebody. She was having so much fun on stage. The concert was so personal and i will never forget it. She rocked melbourne and her critics should get a life. She is Whithey Houston there will never be another singer like her. Her presence alone gave me goose bumps :) GO WHITNEY!!!!! Id go again :)
