After 16 days of spirited Winter Olympic competition (which, you may recall, began on February 13), the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games came to a close yesterday in a triumphant way for the host country of Canada. They ended up winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s Hockey Final against the US (and don’t forget, Canada also won the Women’s Hockey Gold Medal earlier in the week) and ended up with the highest Gold Medal count of every country in competition (tho, I might add, the US won the overall medal count with 37 — the most the US has ever won at any Winter Olympic Games). In jubilant celebration, Canada threw one hell of a party last night … which they called the Olympic Closing Ceremony:

The Olympics that started under the cloud of an athlete’s death ended Sunday, much more joyously than they had begun. A victory by the Canadian men’s hockey team over the United States in the final competition of these Games spurred throngs of fans onto the streets, where they celebrated a gold medal — and a Winter Olympics — that united this nation. In waves of their red and white hockey jerseys, they shouted “Go Canada!” to mark the country’s record 14th gold medal here. Not long after, inside B.C. Place, another celebration began. The Canadian singers Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne and Michael Bublé got the crowd of 60,000 dancing. The Canadian actors Michael J. Fox and Catherine O’Hara got the crowd laughing. Every detail — down to the spectators wearing foam moose antlers and the backup singers dressed like Mounties in miniskirts — was a reminder of who had hosted these Games. So, despite the tears of 16 days earlier, the Games ended on a high note, just as Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympics Committee, had expected. “I knew the Games would be a success, even though in the beginning they were a bit gloomy, with legitimate issues and teething pains,” he said Saturday, referring to the shaky start, which was marred by problems, including unseasonably warm weather … Canada, for the first time on its home soil, did not feel a similar pang of disappointment. The glory of the gold medal poured in for the hosts, with Alexandre Bilodeau leading the way. He won the men’s moguls event, becoming the first Canadian to win a gold medal on home soil. In the last week, the Canadians were on a roll, and their gold medal total ended up being the best. “Alexandre, your first gold medal gave us all permission to feel like and behave like champions. Our last one will be remembered for generations,” Furlong said, referring to the Canadian team’s gold medal victory over the United States in men’s hockey. Despite that final loss, the performance of Team USA was also memorable. It won 37 medals, more than it has ever won in a Winter Games. Apolo Ohno, a short-track speedskater, won three medals to become the most decorated American in Winter Games history with eight medals over all. Bill Demong, an athlete in the Nordic combined, won the United States’ first gold medal in that sport. Bode Miller won a gold in the super combined, topping off the best Olympic run for American Alpine skiers since 1984. “No matter what our projections were, it would be hard to deny that we’ve exceeded that,” said Scott Blackmun, the chief executive of the United States Olympic Committee. “The team performed fantastically, but we expected them to perform fantastically. They did better than we even thought they would.” Some American athletes, including the Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, failed to meet high expectations. Vonn came into these Games with a goal of winning five gold medals, but left with one gold, in the downhill, and a bronze. Still, she called these Games her best yet because of the welcoming atmosphere. “At the end of the day, I’m leaving these Games happy because I gave it everything I have,” she said … In the end, the Canadians managed a smooth ending to these Games, down to fixing the glitch from the opening ceremony that left the Canadian speedskater Catriona LeMay Doan holding a torch, but with nothing to light. One leg of the Olympic caldron had failed to emerge from the ground. But at the closing ceremony, that leg finally appeared, to deafening cheers. LeMay Doan lighted the flame, in a symbolic moment that showed that the Games could regroup. What marked these Games the most, though, was Canada’s performance, Rogge said. Nothing makes an Olympics better than when the host country finds success. That is why Bilodeau’s victory in the moguls proved so momentous. “Canada woke up, the Games and the rest of the world woke up,” Rogge said.
As far as Winter Olympic Games go, I think the Vancouver Games will be fondly remembered as among the most exciting of them all … it really was a spectacular 2 weeks of competition that we ALL got to enjoy. After the jump, check out a few more photos from the Closing Ceremonies and read some of my final thoughts on the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games …

I loved these Olympics. And as bummed as I am that the US lost the Men’s Hockey Final game, I’m contented with the fact that the US won the first game against Canada and they won the next (tho, their win matters a bit more) so in my mind we’re tied … we’re both winners (besides, I much prefer silver to garish gold)!! I think it’s right for the host country to do well in their Olympic Games and I think everyone sat up and took notice of the sleeping giant known as America’s hat Canada ;) Well done, Canucks … and thank YOU for a wonderful Olympic Games.
And so … for the next round of Winter Olympic Games, we look to Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia in 2014!! Those Ruskies have some big shoes to fill … I can’t wait for those games to get underway in 4 year’s time!!! Woot!!

ohhh i forgot… is K-os going to be in trouble for ripping off Drake? it was sooo obvious last night that K-os used the beat in his performance from Drakes song “forever”… unless they share like musical aspects or some shit lol
As a Canadian living in Spain, I can say I have never felt more proud of my country. I think we did a great job of showcasing our diversity – honouring the First Nations chiefs was an incredible moment for me . When I watched the crowd of people dressed in white dancing with snowboards I proudly noticed a few snippets of our diversity: many young people of Asian descent, at least one young man wearing a Sikh turban, young people from a First-Nations background, and people of Caucasian descent. I was impressed, considering how long I have spent in monocultural La Mancha, Spain. I miss Canada!
“[Canada] ended up with the highest Gold Medal count of every country in competition (tho, I might add, the US won the overall medal count with 37 — the most the US has ever won at any Winter Olympic Games).”
I just wanted to reiterate what MiKiE said — we didn’t just get more gold medals than any other country THIS YEAR. We got more gold medals than any other country EVER.
Considering that we were going into these Games with the worry about how we’d never yet won a gold medal on home soil AT ALL… lol…
I am a Canadian who lives in the US and what I took away most from these games was a long overdue and very exciting sense of Canadian patriotism!! We have always been a quiet/polite country and these games brought out such a sense of pride for Canada through the gear (hello red mittens!), the celebration and the coming together as Olympic host. I think Vancouver did a great job representing Canada and to see Trent and other Americans write positive things about my country gives me chills. Go Canada Go!!!
What is with all the hate for Nickleback, if you don’t like their music, fine, but they ARE still Canadian, I have nothing bad to say. Good for them they have a made a name for themselves, coming from a small little town in Alberta!
Im Canadian.. and we too hate Nickelback hahaha. Theyre from the SMALLEST town ever, in Sasketchewan.
Im SO proud of our country though. Ive NEVER experienced the energy I did yesterday in downtown Calgary last night. Everyone was high fiving on the streets, honking non stop.. guys in red and white screaming from every car. It was truly amazing. I know we’re the underdogs of America, and it was our time to show that we ARE our own country.
Nickelback is awful, Avril is awful, Simple Plan is awful, Headley is awful…its’ unfortunate that they didn’t have any east coast acts during the concert portion of the ceremonies. Now people think that Canadian music sucks. lol
I was quite disappointed with the closing ceremonies. I thought the Micheal Buble bit was tacky and well the concert portion features the worst of Canadian music, minus Alanis.
I’m so proud of the Canadian athletes. They did so well. Yay for mens hockey. Team USA shouldn’t have pouted so much. They did after all take a silver medal at an Olympics they were not projected to medal in. It was such a shame to see them take it so badly.
Sorry but Nickleback is from Hanna, Alberta. Your from Calgary it’s not that far, lol!
I am Canadian as well. I’ve just noticed a lot of hate for some Canadian musicians not just Nickleback. I am proud to be Canadian and if that comes with stereotypes, certain bands, etc. I don’t care I am proud to be Canadian and everything with it!
I am also a Canadian, and so extremely proud. I loved that we chose to end the Olympics with a big ass concert. However, I too was disappointed in the musicians who were chosen. I understand selecting people who have a large international following, but there are so many great, diverse, Canadian acts that could have been showcased: Hawksley Workman, Gob, Bedouin Soundclash, Billy Talent, GirlTalk, Dragonette, The Tragically Hip, Matthew Good, The Trews, Barenakes Ladies, Metric. Hot Hot Heat, USS… I don’t even like all of these groups, but they would have been more representative of the amazing current Canadian music scene than Simple Plan and Hedley…
We did trot out Neil Young, though, which I thought was beautiful and understated. I know that no matter which bands they picked, it wouldn’t have pleased everybody. We do have a real depth of Canadian talent, what with the Hip, Rush, OLP and so many others. Perhaps they were trying to appeal to the “youth”?
YEAH CANADA! Sorry trent, that “garish gold” means a heck of a lot to the people here. Amazing!! xx
I’m a Red Wings fan, so even though I’m bummed the U.S. lost, it was nice to see Stevie Yzerman happy. Glad he did well as their executive director.
WOOT! <3 Canada and future hubby Sid the kid :)
I was so bummed that USA didn’t win the gold in Hockey. It would have been epic!! But I am happy for Canada cause it is their sport on their turf. Congrats to Canada! It was a great game. ~~~ I thought the closing ceremonies were decent. The mime thing was cute and it was nice to see that they could poke fun at the mishap. Really glad that lady got to light her portion of the torch too. I am no fan of Neil Young, but his performance was the best of the night. The song was quite fitting. I also loved the standing O that Michael J Fox got. Love him!! As for Nickelback, I’ve always found it interesting that everyone hates them (including me), yet they get constant radio play?!?! LOL They must be paying the radio stations good bucks or something.
I was NOT happy to see Nickelback and Avril Lavigne perform…I had to walk away from the T.V. ’til they were finished. I think K’naan would’ve been a better choice.
The Winter Games were happening literally in my back yard. I was fortunate enough to see the flame twice, my husband got a close but terrible picture of Governor Schwarzenegger carrying the torch as it went through Stanley Park, and my sister in law was at the Closing Ceremonies. I am American, and I LOVE living here in Vancouver. There is no other city like it! I was a bit disappointed in the Yanks losing to the Canucks (especially after all the trash talking I did with my Canadian coworkers), but cheered for the win anyway! Trent, thank you for being so awesome in your coverage of the games!
CANADA has way hotter hockey players crosby, iginla, luongo, like almost everyone.. for the states meh.. miller was cute but the all acted like a bunch of arrongents jerks no offence..
im so proud of canada! im from montreal and that was for me the most exiting olympic games ive ever watched!
special shout out to Joannie Rochette who lost her mother just days before she was competing and figured skated like a pro and got herself a bronze medal! that was so touching
and MENS HOCKEY TEAM WOOT WOOT :)
The musical talent was horrible. I’m Canadian and the music just made us look generic. Where was the Hip? Where was Metric and the Arcade Fire?
whoa whoa whoa..did i just read somewhere in here that Canada hates hip hop? wtf?? lol please don’t generalize the country like that ;o) but i totally agree on the music being lame.. i mean avril? really? she didn’t even sing a current song of hers! (does she have current songs?) anywho i’m bummed the olympics are over, but i’m so happy our country did us all proud..WE ARE CANADIAN BITCHESSSSS :)
