Stephenie Meyer Announces Her Next Release
A novella spin-off from 'Eclipse'

Hold on your seats Twihards, there’s a new Stephenie Meyer release from The Twilight Saga on the horizon. Unfortch, Meyer‘s next Twilight book will NOT be the much ballyhooed Midnight Sun (which tells the Twilight tale from vampire Edward Cullen‘s perspective) but, instead, a short novella based on the short life of a minor vampire character from the book Eclipse. Here is our first look at the cover art for this new novella titled The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella which will be released on June 5:

Fans whose hopes were dashed when Stephenie Meyer sidelined Midnight Sun, her planned fifth book in the Twilight Saga, after it was leaked online, have reason to get excited. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will publish Meyer’s The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella on Saturday, June 5. The book goes on sale at 12:01 a.m. with a 1.5 million-copy first printing (an e-book version will be available at 6:00 a.m.). One dollar for each copy sold from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner tells the story of a newborn vampire introduced in Eclipse, who will also appear in the film version of Eclipse, scheduled to be released on June 30. The book was originally envisioned as part of Meyer’s The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide. “I’m as surprised as anyone about this novella,” said Meyer in a statement. “When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.” In addition to the print edition, the book will be available to read online for free from June 7 to July 5 at breetanner.com. “[S]ince this story had always been an extra for me, and was meant to be released with the Guide, I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free,” Meyer said in a post about the book on her Web site. “You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift.”

Kudos to Meyer for deciding that this release, which will surely be purchased by every single self-respecting Twilight fan on Earth, will benefit the Red Cross. At last … Twilight will serve to benefit mankind in some real way :) I know there is much demand for Midnight Sun but this release is even more important because it will raise much needed funds for a very important cause. I’m telling you, Midnight Sun will come someday … this is one Stephenie Meyer release I can really get behind. Who’s excited?

I’m not really interested in reading the book. Cause I’m kind of tired of, and over anything Twilight related. However, I do think that it is good that some of the profit of the book sales will be given to red cross. :)

I tried to read the first Twilight book, and I just couldn’t get into it, something about pining for a perpetually 17 year old Vampire felt a little odd to me. I got into Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series instead, love it! I am glad to see that some of the profit is going to a good cause..kudos to Meyers for that.

afterthought – i like the cover.

  8. CHASE says:

I’m sorry, but Stephenie Meyer is extremely selfish and immature. Yeah, I said it! First of all, she made such a BIG deal about Midnight Sun being leaked and then she twisted it around and crucified her fans and blamed them as IF they were the ones to do it! I think she’s just extremely immature because of the whole way she handled it – not to mention she magnified it into a big deal then it is. She then compared herself to artists that have their music leaked on the internet. Um, hi, do artists just cancel their whole entire album because it leaked online? I think not. Then she deleted her myspace page because she said “There were too many fans and it was just messy” <– Why don't you have someone handle it for you then, instead of deleting it? So lame.

  9. Sarah says:

Sweet! Eclipse is my fave book to begin with, and my birthday is June 5th – what a great gift!

  10. Alyse says:

No! There’s more!? I can’t take hearing about twilight all the time! I thought it was over!
And yes, I tried to read them and found them poorly written and full of purple prose.

  11. Alyse says:

The red cross thing is nice though

  12. ally tart check says:

i’m excited and i’m not a screamy teenage girl. i really enjoy stephenie meyer’s writing. plus, it’s so generous of her to release online to fans *and* then donate profits to the red cross! i really hope that there are other “novellas” out there hiding as character development exercises. (a novella told from alice’s point of view would really rock. hint, hint.)

  13. Jen says:

I’m looking forward to it but I’d rather it be Midnight Sun. I know it’ll be released eventually but..come on now.

  14. Kim says:

I’m with Jen^ I was hoping for Midnight Sun and yes I read the leaked material. Even though I think her writing is atrocious, I am looking for a nice quick read!

  15. g says:

@CHASE- I am a HUGE twilight $aga fan..but I agree with everything you said. This is a ploy to milk more money out of the fans. I will only be reading it online.

  16. Jessica says:

June cannot get here quick enough. Not only for the movie, but now the novella. I’ve always heard she was interested in writing a story from the newborns point of view but I was definitely caught off guard to see the book being released in June. The cover looks great & it’s awesome that she is donating money made off of the book to Haiti. If Midnight Sun and The Official Guide could come out in the near future, I would be a extremely happy Twilight fan :)

  17. ashley says:

@Chase – I thought for sure I was going to be the only one who felt that way when I came to comment. I’m a really big Twilight fan but I CANNOT stand Stephenie Meyer. Everything about her rubs me the wrong way. I can guarantee there would be more interest from fans if she planned on releasing Midnight Sun instead and A LOT more money would probably be earned for the Red Cross.

  18. Manda says:

Why in the world can’t I remember the character Bree? Reminder please??

  19. Lisa. says:

@CHASE- I completely agree with you. I lost any respect for her (which wasn’t much to begin with) when she bitched and moaned about Midnight Sun.

  20. Chivonne says:

Actually, Midnight Sun is the only reason I’d give any more attention to the Twilight craze.
