Sean Hayes Does ‘The Advocate’ Magazine
"I was never in, as they say. Never."

In what will very likely come as a surprise to NO ONE ON EARTH, actor Sean Hayes — known for his flamboyantly gay character Jack McFarland on Will & Grace — has finally come out of the closet (as it were) on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of The Advocate magazine. The Advocate hails Hayes‘s coverstory as “the interview you’ve waited 12 years to read” but I don’t think it’s quite that dramatic. At the very least, I am pleased that Sean Hayes finally feels comfortable with himself to open up about who he is with the rest of the world:

Just Jack just came out. Four years after ending his run as Will & Grace’s scene-stealing sidekick, Sean Hayes has confirmed the long-swirling rumors of his sexuality by proudly taking this month’s cover of The Advocate. “I am who I am,” the 39-year-old Emmy winner told the magazine. “I was never in, as they say. Never.” As for why Hayes waited so long to speak so candidly about his personal life, well, there’s one simple reason: It was—and despite his sudden forthcomingness, remains—nobody’s business. “I believe that nobody owes anything to anybody,” he said. “Nobody owes anything to anybody. You are your authentic self to whom and when you choose to be, and if you don’t know somebody, then why would you explain to them how you live your life?” And despite his previous reluctance to go on record about his personal life, Hayes still rightly feels he has done more than his part for the community. “I feel like I’ve contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, and if anyone wants to argue that, I’m open to it. You’re welcome, Advocate.”

Sean Hayes‘s spirited comments from this new Advocate magazine interview continue after the jump …

However, the road to his coming out was long, and Hayes is not without disappointment for those who did their best to out him before he was ready, including the Advocate itself. “Why would you go down that path with somebody who’s done so much to contribute to the gay community?” he asked. “That was my beef about it. What more do you want me to do? Do you want me to stand on a float? And then what? It’s never enough. That’s the thing about celebrity: It sets you up to fail because the expectation is so high of what’s needed, what’s wanted from you that the second you don’t [meet it], you disappoint people.” As for whether his disclosure will cost the erstwhile Jack McFarland any future jobs, he can’t say. “They know where I am if they want me,” he said. “And if they don’t, that’s fine, too.” Still, Hayes, about to make his Broadway debut alongside Kristin Chenoweth in Promises, Promises, isn’t divulging everything about his private life. While he confirms that he’s in a relationship, that’s about the extent of the details he’s dishing. “I spend time with a special someone in my life,” he said. “That’s it. That’s all I need. I don’t need events. I don’t do a lot. I live my life like an 85-year-old man. I’m just quiet. It’s fantastic.”

While I LOVE Sean Hayes for being so open in this interview, I do take a bit of issue over his contention that “celebrity … sets you up to fail”. Actually, IMHO, people seek celebrity for fame and fortune and they set themselves up for the spoils AND the negative aspects that are bundled up with fame. Celebs need to take responsibility in that respect. But I digress … I’m certain it will be very therapeutic and cathartic for Hayes to get this off his chest. As I said, it comes as a surprise to no one … and now it’s no longer an issue :) Well done, Sean!! Click HERE to read the full online version of Sean Hayes‘s interview with The Advocate magazine.

I love Sean Hayes!! I miss watching him as Jack on Will & Grace. Gay or not, that man his hilarious. I just wish he did more with his career after W & G ended.

Trent, usually we’re sooo on the same page but I have to disagree with your comment about celebrity and fame. While I’m sure there are actors, singers, etc out there who turn to that industry as a career in the hopes of just being famous I also believe there are those who are just doing what they love and fame is a by-product of it. I also agree with Sean Hayes in that just being famous doesn’t automatically make you a role model or mean you HAVE to put your life out there and become some sort of spokesperson. Celebrity doesn’t automatically equal the loss of your private life….unless of course you have a show on E! :-)

  3. anna says:

Wow, so cool. I realllly love him as an actor and I really wish he was in another show too @katieC. He is actually extremely intelligent. Love him.

  4. Marc says:

Soooo.. I just want to point out, because I’m good at this kind of thing, that the interview and cover are from The Advocate and you keep referring to Out magazine.

  5. krissy says:

Oooh, good eye Mark! I agree with ismael. Not everyone who is into the arts is into because they want to be famous. Some people want to be story tellers. It makes sense that if he is in it for craft that he wouldn’t want to be a completely open book. For example, with Lindsey Lohan I think we know so much about her personal life that you can’t imagine her as a character…she is always “Lindsey” now.

    • @krissy — Ah yes, but celebrities who become famous do not go, “No, no … I won’t use my celebrity to my advantage because I didn’t become an actor/actress to BE famous.” Instead, they enjoy the spoils of celebrity whether they got into showbiz for the fame and fortune because that comes along with the gig … I say, so too does come along the negative stuff as well.

It’s only been 4 years since Will and Grace went off the air? Crazy! I’m glad he finally came out, though my reaction is basically the same as when one of my best buddies came out..Annndd?? It was always known, but I guess I’m glad he actually stated it..I LOVED him on W&G and agree that I wish he’d done more..

By the way, Will and Grace had one of THE WORST series finales ever..I hated it..

  7. krissy says:

Not all celebs are like that. There are a lot of actors that chose not to take advantage of their position in society. I don’t think you can lump them all together. But I must bite my tongue, ;)

    • @krissy — Yes, you are right … not all people are the same. My point is celebrity comes with highs and lows, it’s part of the job. A police officer may want to be a police officer out of a feeling of civic duty but the job still has deadly risks. Whether famous people want it or not, they become famous … good and bad.

  8. xerx says:

I might have to get tickets to see him and Kristin Chenoweth on Broadway!

Also, these photos of him are great! The blue chair photo in particular is stunning.

Sean is sooooo adorable, I love him :)

  11. Michael-sean says:

as a gay american I have zero respect for him because for the last 12 years he has refused to answer the ? and now suddenly (probably bcos he needs the press) he comes out?
He has played about a dozen gay roles and should have been honest all along, he just helped to perpetuate gays in hollywood staying in the closet which does nothing to help gay causes …SERIOUSLY SCREW SEAN HAYES

  12. Ana says:

I think he was only trying to prove a point: if staight people don’t have to answer to the question “are u straight?” then why gay people do? Anyway, everybody already knew he was gay and probably he thought the same so…why answer to the obvious. I don’t think this was an issue for him.

  13. Adi says:

@Michael-sean. Why do you feel like we, gay americans, are entitled to have Sean Hayes answer the question on his sexuality during the last 12 years? IMO gays in hollywood can stay in the closet as long as they want and gay people need to shut it. It doesn’t matter if that perpetuates the stereotype of gays in hollywood. You really think if he were to come out 12 years ago that it would’ve helped gay causes that significantly? Why are we so focused on outing gay celebrities and relying on them to support “the cause”? Why aren’t we the focus? When was the last time we step outside of our own comfort zone and actually reach out to the outside community? How do we push ourselves to help gay causes? Celebrities alone can’t change anything, change comes from making people aware of homosexuality and you have more power than you think.

@Trent I think as much as celebrities need to take responsibility of the price of fame, we as a society need to take responsibility of respecting these individuals of their privacy, however limited it already is. There are two contributors to this issue, and we need to own up to ours. Related to your other post, I’m just being the voice of dissent, even if it’s wrong :)

    GO SEAN! I LOVE HIM!
