Last night David and I ventured south to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our friends Josh and Emma and their friend Andrew for dinner and a movie. First, we hit a Middle Eastern restaurant called Open Sesame (which was pretty fantastic but my heart still belongs to Cedar Gardens back home in Dearborn, MI) and then we went to see the Academy Award-nominated for Foreign Language Film A Prophet:

A Prophet is a French film that tells the tale of a young man doing time in prison … but it is so much more than that. There aren’t enough words to express how impressed I was with this film. It is not your conventional film in that it is not predictable and the story is wholly entertaining. The acting performances were utterly superb. It is deffo one of those film’s I would heartily recommend to any one. I think we decided that a good description of the film is The Shawshank Redemption meets The Godfather. It’s gritty and grisly in some parts but the whole thing just works. I had no idea how the movie would resolve itself … which is a great way to keep the audience engrossed. We all loved the movie very much … it’s very clear that this film got robbed of the Best Foreign Film trophy at the Academy Awards this year … it really should’ve won.

I have to say, and this has nothing to do with the film itself, I had no idea that French prisons were so posh! If US inmates were able to get day leaves from prison to work on the outside then our prisons would be empty cuz they’d all just leave and never come back. Gotta love the French sensibility of paying for one’s crimes. Anyways … see this movie while you can. It’s really excellent.

Today is a beautifully sunny day … I’m hoping to get out and enjoy some of it.

DON’T FORGET TO TURN YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD TONIGHT … it’s Daylight’s Savings Time again! Spring Forward, y’all!!

As I scrolled down chuckling to myself over the concept of posh prisons, I noticed you’re going to see Metric! Don’t know if you’ve seen ‘em before, but if not I really think you’ll thoroughly dig ‘em live. Emily Haines moves like the hottie she is and the band just effing rocks it thru the whole set. GREAT live show. Enjoy it and I’ll be lkg fwd to ur review :)

Hey Trent! I’m so glad you liked this film, it’s excellent.
Being French I can assure you that prisons are in no way posh and that you can’t just leave whenever you like for the day.
If I remember well in the film, he’s been in prison for quite a while (a year at least) before he gets the permission to leave for a day.
Actually, what suprised me the most is that they get a WHOLE baguette with their meal!
But yeh, fantastic film. The actor is simply amazing. I highly recommend that you check out another Audiard film (De battre mon coeur s’est arrete / The beat that my heart skipped – it’s beautiful).

I can’t say enough about this film. It’s tied for the best film I saw last year. Everything about it worked, the lead actor was incredible, so vulnerable and that was his first film. I couldn’t believe they had single rooms in french prisons either and that the prisoners could buy things like electronics to spruce it up.

Hey Trent, did you see this weeks episode of Skins? I thought it was so shocking and phenomenal!!

Un Prophète was so good! I saw it at this little theatre in Paris last fall. It was so powerful!

Yay Manhattan Beach! Such an unappreciated part of LA with such amazing people!

  7. I will have to see this. I like your movie and book recommendations, Trent :)

  8. John says:

A Prophet is great, but I would like to know, Trent, if you’ve already seen El Secreto de sus Ojos, the film that took the Oscar. If you haven’t (as I suspect) you shouldn’t be saying A Prophet was robbed… It is irresponsible…

  9. Gise says:

What John said! El Secreto is a great combo of great performances, excellent storyline, visual magestry. Please, watch and see for yourself.

  10. Gise says:

I know I probably butchered that word. Still, go watch!
