Jude Law Hosts ‘Saturday Night Live’
You may actually remember this one

Last night (as we learned earlier in the week) actor Jude Law played guest host on Saturday Night Live for the second time in his storied career. As you may recall (but most likely will NOT), Jude hosted a few years ago when Ashlee Simpson was the musical guest. On that fateful episode, the only thing the world will ever remember is Ashlee‘s horrible lip syncing faux pas and not Jude‘s hosting performance. I’m happy to inform y’all that no such controversy took place during last night’s episode … if Jude‘s performance was forgettable it’s no one’s fault but his own. Here are some of Jude‘s SNL promo photos as featured on the show last night:

I’m afraid that none of the skits were very memorable at all … it seemed like a pretty tame ep overall. The only time I really laughed was during the Weekend Update (and I did enjoy the Prius commercial). But Jude gave it his best shot — and even let the SNL players make mention of the lovechild he fathered with Samantha Burke (anything for a laugh, eh Jude?). Last night’s ep also featured a Digital Short by Andy Samberg with special guest Julian Casablancas from The Strokes. After the jump, check out Jude‘s SNL skits, a couple segments from Weekend Update (one featuring a fake Whoopi Goldberg and the other featuring the real Jerry Seinfield) and watch the Digital Short in full …

Digital Short – Boombox:

Ugh … I’m so tired of sitting thru Saturday Night Live hoping and praying for a laugh. I don’t get it … I just don’t understand how it’s NEVER funny! Seth Meyers usually scores with the zingers on Update but for the most part … meh. I wasn’t even all that impressed with the Digital Short, to be honest. I guess I’ll just bide my time ’til Betty White hosts SNL on May 8 — that ep is bound to be worth watching. Did any of y’all watch last night? Did YOU enjoy the ep?

His hair looks really good in the promo pics… He looks a lot better than he usually does.

    how was pearl jam?

  3. Robin says:

I thought the dialog in the beginning of the home security skit was a little funny and when they had the Gremlin from the Twilight Zone skit on the elliptical. Overall though, SNL has been downright disappointing.

Writing aside (and lately, it’s been terrible), I think the real problem is with the female cast. SNL is at it’s best when the ladies are front and center (ie: Tina, Amy, Mya, Rachel most recently, and Ana and Cheri back in the day). All the current girls are forgettable. Kristen Wigg is the only shining light, but I’m willing to bet that if this season isn’t her last, next season will be.

As exciting as the Betty White episode sounds (including the reunion of most of the above mentioned female former cast members), i think that’s when it’ll be painfully obvious that the current female cast is just not cutting it.

And by the way; HOW HARD IS IT TO FIND A FUNNY BLACK FEMALE???

The bottom line is, the writing just sucks. The court room sketch was excruciating. I think Jude did the best with what he had to work with, and his Russian ballerina and killer Spaniard were the best of his sketches. I liked the interview where he allowed them to poke fun at him, but he went along with it in his previous gig, too. All in all, this one was far inferior to the 2004 episode, where the only thing that sucked about that show was Ashlee; the cast was funny (I agee with JK about the female cast), the writing far better, and showed that Jude is good at comedy (“You must NEVAH go up there, Jane:”, “I’ll have your gin-lovers’ pizza”, “I’m not sure why I would bite a fireball.”)
Keenan as Whoopie was great, but he’s about my favorite. Hader is pretty good, too. But they all have to work with sucky material.

  6. um where is the amazing performances by Pearl Jam, Trent? the only good part of the show…

  7. Kristin says:

Liked the Digital Short. Julian Casablancas is just too fucking cool. Love it!

  8. nicole says:

the weekend update seems to be the only part of the show that never fails

How can Seth Meyers be so funny on Weekend Update and also be the head writer of such a poorly written show. On the bright side, the Ford (Prius) commercial was the funniest thing on SNL all season.

  11. Dave says:

As both a host and musical guest, J Lo was much better. Last week, Zach Galifianakis was at least funny and brought the sketches out of the gutter. Pearl Jam? Spare us. Now appearing at the “Kickspit Underground Rock Festival” along with Donkey Crust and Gunt, is PEARL SPAM featuring Eddie Van Bed Wetter and his band of weirdos. “Everyone gets a pitchfork!”

  12. Sassy K says:

I thought Zach Galifianakis was hilarious last week. It’s the first time I have laughed watching SNL in a long time. But last night’s ep was brutal. I can’t understand how the writers can possibly think that this shit is passable as funny. Seriously. Although the Jerry Seinfeld bit was good.

  13. Maddie J says:

Zach Galifinaskis was hilarious last week. Saved that one on my tivo and have been watching it over and over again :) I’m excited to see Tina Fey next week though…that should be a good one!

  14. Manda says:

hahaha the Prius one was good. I think it’s sad that SNL can barely come up with 2 good skits a show now. How come comedy shows that are on 5 nights a week can come up with good material every night?? And to all of you saying how great Zach Galifianakis was last week, yes he was great, however, he was underused. He was barely in anything!

  15. fizzingwhizbee says:

Which sketch had the Samantha Burke baby situation in it?

  16. toast says:

For some reason I was laughing very hard at the “I can’t find my chap stick” and I haven’t listened to Pearl Jam since my old roommate stole my CD in 95 so it was refreshing to hear something new. Boombox was awesome..that was great and the Prius/Ford gone wrong was pretty funny too..

Haven’t watched SNL in a long time but at least they had some special guests.

  17. toast says:

Oh and the vodka sketch lol! I forgot that XD yes!
