Does The World Really Need A ‘Gillligan’s Island’ Movie?
Is nothing sacred in Hollywood, anymore?

Hollywood has delved back into sacred collection of classic television programs in order to find a story to make into a major motion picture. Much like tv-shows-to-films like Charlie’s Angels, The Brady Bunch, Mission: Impossible, Get Smart, Starsky & Hutch and most recently The A-Team (and on and on and on), plans are are now in the works to adapt the classic TV series Gilligan’s Island for the big screen:

The seven castaways of “Gilligan’s Island” have found a home at Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment. The studio and production company have begun development on a feature film based on the iconic CBS sitcom, which generated solid ratings during its three seasons between 1964 and 1967 and then found something close to eternal life in syndication. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are onboard to produce for Atlas, with Brad Copeland penning the screenplay. Original show producer Sherwood Schwartz is aboard to exec produce along with son Lloyd Schwartz. Plans are for a contempo take on the well-known premise and characters, with the studio and the Schwartzes’ blessing Copeland’s initial idea for the screenplay. Roven told Daily Variety that he’s hoping to start production as early as next year but won’t move forward on seeking a director or cast until Copeland’s script is completed. “The characters are so good,” Roven added. “We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.” The 98 episodes of “Gilligan’s Island,” starring Bob Denver as the hapless title character, centered on the wacky misadventures of seven castaways — two crew members, a millionaire couple, a professor, a movie star and a girl-next-door type — on an uncharted and uninhabited island in the Pacific. Sherwood Schwartz composed “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle,” which ran at the top of each segment, as a way for viewers to understand the premise. Co-stars were Alan Hale Jr., Tina Louise, Dawn Wells, Jim Backus, Russell Johnson and Natalie Schafer. Final episode aired on April 17, 1967, with the castaways still stranded as the skein wasn’t renewed for a fourth season. Jon Berg is overseeing the project for the studio. No casting’s been set although Sherwood Schwartz said in an interview last year that he was interested in Michael Cera playing the lead role.

NOOO! Ugh … I hate this … I hate how every single TV show that ever existed will eventually be turned into a terrible movie, thereby destroying the belovedness of the original TV series. Do we not recall that horribly STUPID competitive reality TV series The Real Gilligan’s Island that assaulted our senses (and insulted our intelligence) a few years ago? Gilligan’s Island made a terrible reality TV show and it will, most likely, make a terrible movie. I suppose it’s to be expected … Hollywood already ruined classic 60′s TV shows like Bewitched, The Beverly Hillbillys, Lost in Space, etc. so I guess it’s Gilligan‘s time for ruination. How long until they decide to ruin I Dream of Jeanie and the rest of our beloved classic TV shows? Blah.

  3. Faye says:

At least we can ignore the movies, and with DVDs revisit the actual shows :).

  4. CB says:

Doesn’t it seem like they only make these movies in order to see which new star can best portray an old star?

  5. Margie says:

The answer is not only a no, but a hell no.

    Ugh.

  6. Denise says:

I don’t think the movies ruin the classic TV shows. I look at them as separate entities.

  7. CHASE says:

The TV show (in my opinion) is awful! How about another Brady movie or something? Ha

  8. SuziLee says:

OMG – can’t anyone come up w/new ideas anymore?? This is a BAD idea!!!!! Really really bad. What’s next, a Good Times or Jeffersons or Partridge Family movies too?? Are the screenwriters still on strike? : )

  9. debho says:

@chase, I thought the show was awful too. And I won’t watch a movie either.

  10. Larry B says:

Maybe they can make a movie about a guy named Robert who gets a heart transplant and call it Bob Newhart

  11. PixiesBassline says:

Trent, the answer is a big, fat, overwhelming NO!!!!!!
Wtf? It’s like the people “in charge” are missing the 70′s and 80′s pretty damn bad.

  12. PixiesBassline says:

Oops – and in this case, the 60′s

I they actually did an excellent job with Beverly Hillbillies, Cloris Leachman as Granny c’mon, no one lese could’ve done that role so well. All the main cast members were spot on and they even included the original Jed as a spoof as Barnaby Jones. I agree, the rest of the movies were rubbish. Most of the other movies make the mistake of including duplicate scenes of the old classics which you can’t ever do justice to and you really don’t want to see them again bastardized as such. Brady Bunch was full of the classic scenes, Marcia nose, playing ball in the house, the Hawaiian idol vacation, etc., they didn’t write anything new.
