‘Spartacus’ Star Andy Whitfield Reveals Cancer Illness

In January it was revealed that Dexter star Michael C. Hall was diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer and today we are learning that Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has, too, contracted a treatable form of cancer. Whitfield has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and, as a result, has had to halt production on the second season of his hit Starz series Spartacus. I understand that Whitfield should be able to fully treat his illness because, thankfully, it was detected in the early stages:

Sad news: Andy Whitfield, who’s currently starring in the Starz drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand. As a result, production on the second season of Spartacus — which was scheduled to get underway later this month — has been delayed. Whitfield’s cancer was detected early and his prognosis is good. “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” said Whitfield in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” said Starz president Chris Albrecht. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.” Spartacus’ first season concludes April 16.

This is both very sad and yet very hopeful news. I’m very happy to know that Whitfield caught this illness in the early stages, which will greatly increase his chances at full recovery. David is a huge fan of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and from what I’ve seen, the show is pretty good. I sincerely hope that Andy Whitfield is able to beat this disease so he can get back to work on season 2 of his hit show. Let’s send all of our thoughts and prayers out to Andy today to help fortify his efforts to BEAT his illness. Get well soon, Andy!

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Releases A 10-Second Preview Clip

Hang on to your seats, y’all … an early (and extremely short, blink-and-you-missed it sort of) preview teaser clip from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has made its way to the Internets, giving us our FIRST LOOK at the next installment of The Twilight Saga movie franchise:

The highly anticipated first trailer for Summit Entertainment’s THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE will be available to the media on Thursday, March 11 at 6:00 AM PST/9:00 AM EST via satellite (please see coordinates below). The 90 second trailer’s contents are being kept under tight wraps until its debut. Prior to this, on Wednesday, March 10 a 10-second teaser of that trailer will be available at 6:00 AM PST/9:00 AM EST. The full trailer for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE can also be seen in theatres in front of Summit Entertainment’s REMEMBER ME, which also stars Robert Pattinson. In THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprise their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black. The film is directed by David Slade, based on the novel “Eclipse” by Stephenie Meyer, with a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg. U.S. release via Summit Entertainment, June 30, 2010.

The full Eclipse trailer will make its debut tomorrow but today we get the sneak peek of that trailer. Despite being only 10 seconds long, it does hit all of the Twilight high-points that we have come to expect from the franchise — gloomy Edward, Bella‘s bad wig and shirtless Jacob. After the jump, check out the teaser clip in full …

Lost boy
Corey Haim Passes Away At 38

Very sad news to pass along today … child actor Corey Haim — from such 80′s films as Silver Bullet, Lucas, Dream a Little Dream, The Lost Boys, etc. — has died due to an apparent drug overdose. Haim was found in an unresponsive state at the home he shared with his mother earlier this morning and was pronounced dead at the hospital … he was only 38 years old :(

Corey Haim, a Hollywood teen star of the 1980s who became as famous for his struggles with substance abuse as his acting, died in Los Angeles of an apparent drug overdose, U.S. media reports said Wednesday. He was 38. In the 1980s, the Canadian-born Haim starred in “Lucas,” alongside Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder, and “The Lost Boys,” with Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric and Corey Feldman, as well as “License to Drive,” also with Feldman. He became known for his on-screen partnership and off-screen friendship with Feldman, another teen star, and they often were called “The Two Coreys.” Both struggled with drug abuse. The pair starred in a reality TV series on American cable television in the 2000s. According to media reports from Los Angeles, Haim was found unresponsive in his apartment and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Los Angeles police said the death was the result of an apparent drug overdose, the reports said.

Adds CNN:

Police said Corey Haim, 38, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, California, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday (6:30 a.m. ET), police Sgt. Frank Albarran told CNN. The death appears to be accidental, possibly an overdose, Albarran said.

It’s no secret that Corey Haim suffered with drug abuse thruout much of his life. Like many child stars, he had been around the temptations of substance abuse from a very young age. I was under the impression that he had his addictions under control, especially in the past few years. It would seem that his demons got the better of him in the end. Corey Haim is such an integral part of my childhood. He was a staple in many of the films that shaped my adolescence. Altho news of his passing in this way isn’t an out of the blue surprise, it’s still very shocking to wake up to news of his sad death. Corey Haim will remain an important part of my childhood and he will be sorely missed. Rest well, Corey.
