Simon Cowell presents his own charity single

While many folks here in Hollywood participated in the 25th anniversary redux of the We Are The World recording last night, folks in the UK got their first listen this morning of another Haitian relief charity single that was recently recorded overseas. R.E.M.‘s song Everybody Hurts was re-recorded by a batch of performers — including folks like Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, Rod Stewart, Jon Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue and more — and the song has already debuted on the UK airwaves:

A star-studded charity single for Haiti had its first airplay on Tuesday, with Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams and Susan Boyle among those teaming up to help quake victims. The version of REM’s “Everybody Hurts,” co-organised by television and music mogul Simon Cowell, will go on sale next weekend to raise funds for the hundreds of thousands affected by the January 12 quake. Other stars lending their voices to the version of REM’s 1993 REM hit include Leona Lewis, JLS, Westlife and Joe McElderry, who won the last series of Cowell’s talent show “The X Factor” Robbie Williams also reunited with his former Take That bandmates Gary Barlow and Mark Owen on the single, recorded in London and Los Angeles. Cowell, known for his acid-tongued appearances as a judge on reality TV shows “American Idol” and “The X Factor”, garnered support from Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the single. The single will be available for download from February 7 and in record shops on February 8. The government has said it will waive sales tax on purchases of the song.

I hope instead of people seeing Everybody Hurts and We Are The World: 25 Years for Haiti as competing charity singles, they will see the two songs as two opportunities to donate to Haitian relief. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of the song Everybody Hurts … mainly because of the depressing tone of the track. But, with all these big name singers lending their voices to the song, I know I can’t help but want to buy Everybody Hurts: Helping Haiti when it becomes available. After the jump, you can listen to the song in full and hear it for yourselves …

What do y’all think … do we like?

  1. Love it! But I do need a video to figure out who some of the singers are……

  2. g says:

What an interesting song choice…I mean yes everybody does hurt, but there isn’t another song he could have chosen that works a bit better? Or write a new song?

  3. jennie says:

everybody hurts is a great song! not all music is happy and i always thought we are the world was dripping cheese , and not the good kind

  4. A. says:

I think the key word in the song is the “sometimes” in the first line of the chorus. Pain will pass. I never really found the song depressing but more like a kick in the ass to get moving on. :)

  5. Manda says:

Love REM and Everybody Hurts. This is a nice remake.

  6. Laura says:

Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Cheryl Cole, Mika, Michael Buble, Joe McElderry, Miley Cyrus, James Blunt, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jon Bon Jovi, James Morrison, Susan Boyle, Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams (in order of appearance) all came together to to produce a charity single for the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal. This emotional cover of REM’s classic hit single “Everybody Hurts” will be available for purchase on February 8th. Proceeds will be split between DEC and The Sun’s Helping Haiti fund.

  8. Ashley says:

How come they have to remake songs to benefit Haiti. Is there no one in the industry that creative to write a new song? Every 25 years if there is a disaster will they remake We Are the World?

  9. Thank you Laura! Even though I am not certain who some of them are… it helps :)

  10. Kendra says:

I broke up with my boyfriend Jackson in my freshman year of high school while Everybody Hurts was playing..It was fitting..For him..Heyooo!

@Ashley – I agree..Where is the originality these days? But as long as its for a good cause, I’m all for it..

  11. mercy says:

  12. Lilliah says:

@Ashley- I totally get what you’re saying, but also think it’s possible that a song people are already familiar with may be more beneficial in the long run for raising more money. Although, it’s hard to say without a new song being written ;)

  13. Isabelle says:
