Yesterday we saw a couple of promos for Jennifer Lopez‘s gig as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night … and today, we’re gonna take another look at how she did on the show. Here are some of J. Lo‘s SNL promo photos from last night’s ep:

I understand J. Lo last hosted SNL 10 years ago and while I don’t necessarily recall that episode, I have to believe it was funnier than last night’s ep was. Let’s get the musical guest portion out of the way first … terrible! The two new songs she performed are tracks that I’ve never heard before and, very honestly, never want to hear again. They were bland, forgettable and just … bad. OY! Further proof that her recording career is in dire, dire straits. The skits … yeah, those were pretty bad, too. I kinda chuckled during the We Are The World skit and I actually laughed out loud during the New Car Horns skits but … that was it. The first and the last skit were humorous … the in-between was horrible. After the jump, if you dare, check out some of the skits from last night’s ep of SNL to judge (or re-judge) for yourselves …

Generally, I place the blame of a bad ep of SNL on the writers … but this time around, it really seems like there is enough blame to go around. Jennifer Lopez really didn’t shine … I think her best performance was in the New Car Horns skit. She was more like Jenny from the Block in that one … and she was funny. Meh. I wasn’t really expecting much … I was just hoping that there would be more funny than what we got. Now, I’m holding off hope for a good ep of SNL until Betty White co-hosts the show with other funny ladies (rumor has it Betty will co-host an upcoming ep with Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and/or Amy Poehler). Now that is gonna be funny. This ep … not so much. What did y’all think … did you like last night’s ep? Which skit was your fave?

It was awful….I liked the first song she did but the 2nd one was awful…at least she sang live…the skits just weren’t funny…even the ones that she wasn’t in weren’t funny…it was so bad…terrible, terrible writing!
wiig’s stefani was beyond brillz!
i cant even completely blame her. the writing for this season alone has been horrible. i cant think of one skit from anyone thats really stood out this time round. i liked the songs-apart of thinks this album will be pretty decent.
and i love the promo pics.
I didn’t even bother watching last night but I AM really excited for next week’s ep with Zach Galifiniakis and Vampire Weekend. Zach G’s weird hiliarious humour combined with VW’s catchy summery music? Yes please!
I feel likde I’ve seen them do the car horns thing before, or something similar. In either case, when she first started talking I thought she sounded like MIss. Swan from MAD TV lol.
@roxster — Er, yes, the last time it was Door Bells … that one was dumb funny, too ;)
any chance this was planned last minute when her music problems started to begin and she wanted to show her face publicly to say I’m going to be alright?
Trent i came on here specifically to read your review. i fell asleep after the curling skit which didn’t really have much of la diva, but had some funny parts. i’m not surprised it sucked, SNL has been bad this season (as others have also said).
oh and trent, you didn’t comment on Wiig’s Stefani impersonation! it was awesome!!!!
@momo — Hahaha, yes … Wiig as Gwen was pretty inspired … it’s a shame that skit was not funny at all, even tho it had the potential to be really funny.
jennifer was funny…SNL IS DEAD it wasnt funny but jlo did an awsome job
i miss Mad Tv
I last season was not very good since they had lots of budget cuts but for quite a while I always found Madtv funnier.
The singing was HORRENDOUS!! I cringed a couple of times…and the acting was only slightly better than her singing, which says a lot. Wow.
@ Tina – I disagree. While ‘Starting Over’ isn’t a good song she sang both songs amazing. Yeah, she was pitchy a little but for a woman who’s been critisized so much that she was a terrible singer she sang really good. In fact, I found the singing parts to be the best part of the entire show.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the songs she sang, but I thought the episode was quite funny and better than a lot of the other more recent episodes.
The show sucks SO bad now. I can’t even bear to watch it unless Justin Timberlake is on.
I couldn’t stay up to watch this whole episode but what I saw was pretty bad. And I only saw the first musical performance but it was pretty bad. I would have to disagree with anyone who thinks she did an “amazing” job singing…I winced quite a few times when she clearly just missed the note altogether. Not to mention the song itself which was just awful.
@Tracy – im pretty much the same way, i always look forward to it when JT is on…when him and Andy Samberg get together, you know its gunna be good.
I DVR the episode of saturday night live. I thought the “we are the world” skit was funny. But I pretty much fast forward to the rest of the episode. For her music I actually thought the song itself not her singing was good. Why she thinks she can sing a ballad I won’t never understand. I cringe when she try to hit the high note like she thinks she celine dion or something.
SNL sucks no matter who is hosting. It’s the lame writing and boring cast.
“Yeah, she was pitchy a little but for a woman who’s been critisized so much that she was a terrible singer she sang really good.”
Um, yeah…
So she sang really well for someone who’s been called a terrible singer? And she was pitchy?
But, uh, remind me what she does for a living? What she, supposedly, is worth millions of dollars because of?
The pop music business these days is a joke. They don’t want singers, they want dancers and models, the rest is done artificially. They don’t even do difficult songs, vocally speaking… The artists who are actually GOOD singers get some moderate success, but let’s not for an instant fool ourselves into believing the big-time music stars are anything resembling “musicians”.
Jennifer Lopez is nothing but a pretty face with a diva attitude and a career-pushing machine, but there’s no talent there, either in singing or in acting — at least, no more talent than in thousands of high school theatre musical productions…and probably even less…
I did get a kick out of the We Are The World skit, but it def could have been better. JLo’s Rihanna could have been waaay better. Wiig was amazing w/ Gwen though LOL ~~~ so are there any videos of her musical performance?
Trent, I usually agree with most of your opinions and that is why I love reading yoru blog every day. But the place we always seem to disagree on are SNL episodes and their hosts.
J.Lo was great last night. She held her own and besides WE ARE THE WORLD and the CAR HORN skits, Besos Y Lagrimos was laugh out loud funny, the flag Digital Short was very creative/entertaining, and the ESPN classic of Curling was definitely funny (maybe I thought so because I’m Canadian and have been super into the Olympics). I was pretty entertained until the end.
I’m not sure why you didn’t see that I did?!
